Call asLocator() on the existing handle: const locator = elementHandle.asLocator(); It is synchronous and returns a Locator<Element>. The locator still refers to that particular element; it does not re-query the page or recover a stale handle.
Convert an existing handle
Here is a TypeScript example using waitForSelector(), which can return null when no matching element is found. Check the types and options for the Puppeteer version installed in your project.

const buttonHandle = await page.waitForSelector('button.submit');
if (!buttonHandle) {
throw new Error('Submit button was not found');
}
const buttonLocator = buttonHandle.asLocator();
await buttonLocator.click();
There is no await before asLocator(). The example awaits the selector lookup and the subsequent click, but the conversion itself is an ordinary synchronous method call.

An ElementHandle refers to a particular DOM element. Calling asLocator() wraps that reference in locator behavior, so you can use locator preconditions for actions. It does not preserve a selector or arrange to find a replacement element later. If the referenced element becomes stale, the handle-backed locator cannot refresh it. Puppeteer’s method reference describes this distinction.
#1 Best Overall
Locators are strategies for locating objects and performing actions. Puppeteer’s locator API retries an operation when the object is not ready for the action; available methods include click, fill, hover, scroll, wait, and waitHandle. A locator created from a handle remains tied to that handle, however—it is not a fresh lookup strategy.
Choose a handle-backed or selector-backed locator
| Approach | Example | Use it when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handle-backed | handle.asLocator() |
You already have the intended element and want locator preconditions for interacting with it. | It cannot refresh a stale handle. |
| Selector-backed | page.locator(selector) or frame.locator(selector) |
The element should be found from a selector when the action runs. | Choose a selector that identifies the intended element in the relevant page or frame. |
For new code that needs selector-based resolution at action time, use a page or frame locator directly:

Puppeteer recommends locators for selecting and interacting with elements. Its interaction guide describes automatic waiting for presence and relevant action conditions, including viewport presence, visibility, enabled state, and a stable bounding box for clicking. See the page interactions guide.

Version and TypeScript notes
The documented signature is asLocator(this: ElementHandle<Element>): Locator<Element>. The API reference result identifies documentation version 25.5.0, while the interaction guide identifies version 25.12.0. Those are documentation versions, not a claim about the version installed in your project. Check the API reference and TypeScript definitions for your installed Puppeteer version before relying on version-specific details. Selector-based APIs can infer element types from selector strings in TypeScript; the cited asLocator() signature returns Locator<Element>. See the method reference and Page.locator reference.

Troubleshooting
waitForSelector()returned no handle: Check that the selector matches the page state and that the selector call’s options and return type match your Puppeteer version. Handle a possiblenullbefore callingasLocator().- The action still fails after conversion: Conversion does not make a stale handle fresh. If the element may have been replaced, use a selector-backed locator so Puppeteer can locate it for the action.
- The target is in a frame: Use
frame.locator(selector)for a selector-backed lookup in that frame. If you already have the correct frame’s handle,asLocator()wraps that handle; it does not move the lookup to another frame. - You need an operation not exposed by Locator: Puppeteer continues to provide lower-level APIs such as
waitForSelector()andElementHandle; use those when they better fit the task.

If the goal is a clean screenshot rather than browser automation, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; for example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot. See the API documentation for request options.
