You can enlarge a photo while keeping it looking good, but adding pixels does not guarantee that missing scene detail will return. Start with the best original file, choose the final screen or print dimensions first, resize once, and inspect the result both close up and at its intended viewing size. For a small or soft image, compare a conventional resize with an AI upscale rather than assuming either will be more faithful.
What happens when you enlarge a photo?
An image editor can increase a file’s pixel dimensions through resampling: it calculates new pixels from the existing image. That can make a photo larger on screen or suitable for a larger print, but it cannot guarantee recovery of detail that was never captured or has been lost through compression, cropping, or earlier resizing. AI upscalers may estimate additional detail, so treat that detail as generated rather than verified.

Pixel dimensions and physical print size are related but distinct. In Photoshop, changing physical dimensions without resampling keeps the pixel count the same and changes the pixels-per-inch (PPI) value. Resampling, by contrast, changes the pixel dimensions. Adobe explains image size, resolution, and resampling.

- Find the best source file. Use the original or the largest, least-compressed version available. Avoid starting from a copy that has already been resized or compressed repeatedly; a better source gives the enlargement more information to work with. Topaz’s upscale and resize guidance recommends using an original when possible.
- Decide the output before resizing. Set the intended use—screen display, a particular print size, or a crop—and determine the target dimensions. If the output needs a different aspect ratio, crop to that ratio before choosing the enlargement dimensions.
- Make one resampling change. Use your editor’s image-size or resampling controls to enter the required pixel dimensions. Keep the original file separate. Repeated resampling can compound quality loss, so avoid resizing an already-resized result again when you can return to the source. Adobe’s Photoshop documentation describes the relationship between pixel dimensions, resolution, and physical size, and cautions against repeated resampling.
- Compare AI upscaling if the source is very small or soft. Try an AI result alongside a conventional resize. Inspect faces, fine textures, text, and edges at 100% magnification, then check the image at its intended screen or print size. Reject results that invent, distort, or erase details that matter.
- For a print, check the printer’s requirements and viewing distance. Choose dimensions for the physical print and how closely it will be viewed, rather than relying on a single PPI figure for every job.
Should you use conventional resizing or an AI upscaler?
These are different workflow choices, not a guaranteed quality ranking. Conventional resampling is a straightforward way to control image dimensions. AI tools offer model-based enhancement options that may produce a more pleasing result for some small or soft images, but can also alter details. Compare outputs using the same source and target dimensions, and choose based on visible fidelity and the intended use.

| Consideration | Conventional resampling | AI upscaling |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Resamples the image to new pixel dimensions. | Uses model-based processing to create an enlarged result; apparent added detail is an estimate. |
| Useful when | You need direct control over dimensions and the source is reasonably clear. | The source is very small or soft and you want another result to compare. |
| What to inspect | Softness, jagged edges, and loss of fine texture. | Changed faces, text, texture, or edges, including details that look plausible but are not faithful to the source. |

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How large can you print the enlarged image?
There is no single PPI value that is right for every print. The required pixel density depends in part on the physical output and viewing distance: a print usually viewed from farther away can need less pixel density than one examined closely. Topaz’s guidance makes the same viewing-distance distinction in its upscaling documentation. Confirm the print provider’s file requirements, then judge a proof or preview at a realistic distance when possible.

What to check before committing to an upscale
- Source condition: Note whether the image is blurry, heavily compressed, already enlarged, or tightly cropped. Weak input can lead to unwanted artifacts; Topaz warns about artifacts from low-quality sources.
- Amount of enlargement: The greater the change in pixel dimensions, the more carefully you should compare the result with the source. Topaz notes that model treatment varies with the amount of pixel change.
- Faithfulness: If the image contains text, a face, or important fine detail, prioritize an output that preserves what is actually present over one that merely looks sharper.
- Application limits: Check supported dimensions and current software requirements before starting. Topaz documents a maximum longest side of 32,000 pixels for the Gigapixel workflow described in its upscaling documentation; that is a product limit, not a general image-enlargement limit.
