1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse 7-Zip with the 7z format to package files into a password-protected archive for sending or storage. Use VeraCrypt when you want a virtual encrypted disk or drive that you can mount and work from. They serve different workflows; the shared AES-256 terminology is not enough to declare one universally safer.
VeraCrypt or 7-Zip: which should you choose?
| What you need | 7-Zip with 7z | VeraCrypt |
|---|---|---|
| Basic unit | A compressed or stored archive | A virtual encrypted disk in a file, or an encrypted partition or device |
| Best fit | Package files as one object to send or store | Mount a protected workspace and use files through it |
| Encryption details documented by the projects | AES-256; password-derived key using a SHA-256-based function with many iterations | XTS mode; AES-256 and other ciphers; PBKDF2 or Argon2id for applicable file containers and non-system volumes |
| Plaintext exposure to account for | Files are plaintext when extracted; the 7-Zip FAQ says Explorer drag-and-drop extraction uses a temporary folder | Files are accessible to the operating system while the volume is mounted |
| Cost evidence | The 7-Zip FAQ says it is free to use without registration or payment | The cited official VeraCrypt materials do not identify a paid offering |
For 7z, 7-Zip documents AES-256 and a password-to-key derivation function based on SHA-256 with many iterations. VeraCrypt documents XTS volume encryption and multiple cipher and key-derivation options. These design descriptions are not a directly comparable independent audit, and neither proves a blanket security winner. See the projects’ 7z format documentation, encryption scheme, and header key derivation documentation.
How to encrypt files with 7-Zip
Choose this approach when the result should be one archive rather than a drive you keep mounted. The specific encryption details here apply to the 7z format; do not assume that every ZIP archive or other archive program uses the same encryption behavior.
- Select the files you want to package. In 7-Zip, open the archive-creation command for your selected files.
- Choose 7z as the archive format. Set a long, unique password and inspect the available encryption options rather than assuming a particular option is enabled by default.
- Create and test the archive. Confirm that you can open it with the password before deleting or moving the original files.
- Share the password separately. Do not send it in the same message or channel as the archive.
- Extract to a controlled location when needed. 7-Zip’s FAQ says dragging extracted files from 7-Zip into Explorer uses a temporary folder before Explorer copies them to the destination. For sensitive files, avoid that workflow; extract directly to a location you control and clean up plaintext copies when you are finished.
The 7-Zip FAQ says the program can be used without registration or payment. Its temporary-folder description is specific to the Explorer drag-and-drop workflow, not a claim about every extraction method. See the 7-Zip FAQ.

How to use VeraCrypt for an encrypted workspace
VeraCrypt can create a virtual encrypted disk inside a file, or encrypt a partition or storage device such as a USB flash drive or hard drive. You mount a file container or encrypted volume to work with its contents; the project describes its encryption as automatic, real-time, and transparent while in use. That makes it suited to collections you open and change regularly, rather than a single archive to hand off.
- Create the container or choose the device to encrypt. Follow VeraCrypt’s volume-creation workflow for a file container, partition, or device, taking care to select the intended target.
- Choose and protect your credentials. Use a long, unique password. If you deliberately configure keyfiles or other options, preserve the keyfiles and recovery information you will need to unlock the volume.
- Mount the volume when you need the files. Work with the mounted drive as a workspace, then dismount it when finished so its contents are no longer available as an unlocked volume.
- Keep the endpoint trustworthy. Mounting makes files usable by the running computer; encryption at rest does not shield the unlocked data from software or an attacker who can access that computer.
For technical context, VeraCrypt documents XTS mode, AES-256 and other ciphers, and PBKDF2 or Argon2id for applicable file containers and non-system volumes. Its home page describes the virtual-disk and device workflows; its key-derivation documentation explains password, optional keyfiles, PIM, salt, and KDF parameters. Algorithm choices do not compensate for a weak password or an unsafe computer.

- Certified to FIPS 197 - High-level information security standard approved by the U.S. Government
- Brute-Force Password Attack Protection - Data is automatically erased after 6 failed access attempts. The data and encryption key are securely destroyed and the crypto drive is reset
- Rugged Double-Layer Waterproof* Design - Protects the crypto drive against knocks, drops, break-in and submerging in water. The electronics are shielded by a hardended inner case. The rubberised silicone outer casing provides a final layer of protection
- Auto-lock - The crypto drive will automatically encrypt all data and lock when removed from a PC/Mac or when the screen saver or "computer lock" function is activated on the host PC/Mac
- Secure Entry - Data cannot be accessed without the correct high-strength alphanumeric 8-16 character password. A password hint option is available. The password hint cannot match the password
What encryption does—and does not—protect
A password is part of the protection
Use a long password that is unique to the archive or volume. Keep it separate from the encrypted file you share, and make sure you can retrieve any deliberately configured VeraCrypt keyfiles or recovery information. The projects’ encryption descriptions do not make a weak or reused password a safe choice.
Unlocked files can be exposed
An extracted 7z archive contains plaintext files at its destination. Likewise, a mounted VeraCrypt volume exposes its files to the operating system. VeraCrypt’s FAQ explains that an administrator-level attacker, or someone with physical access to a computer that is later used, may capture RAM, passwords, or plaintext from mounted volumes. Encryption does not protect data from software or an attacker who can access it after unlock.

VeraCrypt version and hidden-volume warning
VeraCrypt’s release notes identify version 1.26.29, dated June 9, 2026, as adding Argon2id support for non-system volumes and fixing two security issues. The same notes warn that a security issue fixed in that release may affect plausible deniability for hidden volumes in file containers created with versions 1.26.6 through 1.26.28. Users who rely on that feature are advised to recreate the affected outer container and hidden volume with version 1.26.29 or later and securely erase the old container. Consult the project’s release notes for the version-specific details; plausible deniability is a specialized feature, not a guarantee.
