Set HandBrake’s destination to a folder on a connected external drive, check that the drive has enough free space, and run a short test encode before starting the full job. Encoding time and output size depend on the video, settings, and computer, so a test is more useful than a universal overnight estimate. Keep the computer awake and the drive connected while the encode runs.
Before you start: check the source, destination, and space
- Connect the external drive you plan to use and confirm it appears in your file browser. It must remain connected and powered for the whole encode.
- Check its available space. HandBrake’s listed application storage requirement is 150 MB, but that is not a guide to how much room an encoded video needs. Output size varies with the source and encoding settings.
- Choose a destination folder with enough headroom for an output whose final size you do not yet know. A short test encode can help estimate it.
- Make sure the source video remains available and that you know where HandBrake will save the finished file.
HandBrake documents selecting an output destination; using an external drive is a practical way to keep the encoded file off the PC’s internal drive. The drive’s connection, power, and available capacity are your responsibility during the job.

Encode to an external drive in HandBrake
- Open the source. In HandBrake, open your video. If it contains multiple titles, select the title you intend to encode.
- Choose a playback-appropriate preset. HandBrake describes Fast 1080p30 as a broad-compatibility starting point for general computer playback or an unknown playback target. It is not necessarily ideal for every source or device. Choose based on where you plan to watch the result.
- Set the destination. In the Destination area, use Browse to choose a folder on the external drive and set the output filename. Destination means both the output location and filename.
- Run a representative test. Encode a short section using the settings you intend to use for the full video. Check its playback, visual quality, and file size. Use the observed result to judge whether your available storage looks sufficient; the test is an estimate, not a guarantee for the entire file.
- For multiple videos, queue jobs carefully. Use HandBrake’s queue and automatic naming that includes the title to reduce the chance of jobs overwriting one another. Review the names and destinations yourself before starting.
- Start the encode and verify progress. Confirm that progress advances and that the output is being written to the intended drive and folder. Keep enough free space for uncertainty in the final file size.
Can it finish overnight?
There is no dependable time estimate based only on video duration. Encode time varies with source duration, resolution, content complexity, selected settings, and the computer. HandBrake’s “Starting encoding” guide says that some videos take minutes while others take hours. A sample encode using the same source and settings is the practical way to estimate whether the full job might fit into your available time; it cannot promise an exact finish time.
Encoding uses substantial computer resources. Before leaving the job unattended, use your operating system’s normal power settings to prevent the computer from sleeping, and ensure the external drive will not disconnect or lose power. These are general workflow precautions, not HandBrake-specific settings.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Choose settings with the trade-offs in mind
Encoder choices balance speed, visual quality, file size, and playback compatibility. A faster hardware encoder may finish sooner, but it is available only if HandBrake detects supported hardware and drivers, and it does not eliminate all CPU work. Software encoding may take longer. Neither route is universally better: test the settings on your own source and inspect the result on the intended playback device.
HandBrake’s system requirements list 16 GB of memory for transcoding standard and high definition video (480p through 1080p), and 32 GB for transcoding 4K Ultra HD video (2160p). These are stated system requirements, not predictions of output size or encode duration.

Overnight-encode checklist
- The correct source and title are selected.
- The preset and settings suit the intended playback device.
- The destination points to the external drive, with a clear filename.
- The drive is mounted, writable, powered, connected, and has adequate free capacity.
- A representative test encode has been checked for playback, quality, and approximate size.
- The computer is set not to sleep during the job.
- Queued jobs have distinct names and destinations.
- You will review the finished file before deleting, moving, or replacing the source.
Common problems and fixes
The encode cannot write to the destination
Check that the drive is mounted and writable, that the selected folder exists, and that the drive has free space. Re-select the destination in HandBrake if needed. Keep the drive connected and powered for the full job.
The computer stops encoding while you are away
Check the operating system’s power and sleep settings. Prevent sleep for the duration of the encode, and verify that the drive will not power down or disconnect.

The job is taking longer than expected
Encode time depends on the source, settings, and machine. Hardware encoding may help with speed only when HandBrake detects supported hardware and drivers; other CPU work remains. If timing matters, use a short test encode with the same settings before committing to the full job.
A queued job overwrites another output
Use automatic names that include the title, then verify that every queued job has a distinct filename and destination before starting.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

The output is larger than expected
File size depends on settings and video content, and there is no universal duration-to-size formula. Check a representative test output, reassess the available space, and choose settings suited to your quality and playback needs before encoding the full video.
