Can a YouTube Livestream Get a Strike for Repeating a Previously Cleared Video?

A past Content ID release or successful upload does not automatically clear a new livestream. Check the rights, arrange Content ID allowlisting, and know the difference between a live match, a claim, and a strike.

Yes. A YouTube livestream can be interrupted when it repeats a video that was previously “cleared,” and if YouTube removes the active stream for copyright, the channel can receive a copyright strike. A past clearance does not automatically establish permission for a new live use. Confirm that you have the rights for this specific rebroadcast and ask the rights owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist before going live.

Why a previously cleared video can still cause trouble

“Previously cleared” is not a precise YouTube policy term. It might mean that a Content ID claim was released, that someone granted a license or permission, or simply that an earlier upload stayed online. Those outcomes do not all grant the same rights, and an earlier platform outcome is not proof that a new livestream is authorized.

YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material from another live broadcast. If it identifies material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator to stop. If the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. YouTube also warns that a licensed stream can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to their Content ID allowlist. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams

What “cleared” may mean

What happened before What it establishes What to check before rebroadcasting
A Content ID claim was released or resolved That earlier claim was handled. A released claim alone does not establish that every later use is authorized. Confirm that you have the rights for the livestream and repeat use, not merely a prior claim release.
You received written permission or a license It may grant rights, but the scope depends on its terms. YouTube says licensed content can still trigger a live interruption without allowlisting. Check whether the permission covers live streaming, repeat use, the channel, territory, dates, and every included element such as music. Ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel.
An earlier upload remained online or had no visible claim That alone does not demonstrate permission or guarantee that a later livestream will not be matched. Verify that you have the necessary rights for the specific live use and arrange allowlisting where applicable.

The scope checks in the table are practical ways to verify a permission; YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a universal license form. YouTube says creators need the necessary rights and recommends that licensees ask the owner to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist. YouTube Help: Dispute a copyright claim

Match, claim, removal, and strike are different

Event What it means Likely consequence
Live-stream match or warning YouTube identifies third-party material during the live broadcast. The stream may be replaced with a placeholder, interrupted, or terminated if the material remains. A match warning is not by itself the same as a strike.
Content ID claim on an archived stream YouTube says claims on an archived livestream are made after the broadcast ends. A Content ID claim typically does not itself result in a copyright strike. YouTube Help: Use Content ID matching on live streams
Copyright removal request A legal request asks YouTube to remove content. If YouTube considers the request valid, it removes the content and applies a strike. This is more consequential than a match warning or typical Content ID claim. YouTube Help: About copyright removal requests
Active livestream removed for copyright YouTube says removal of an active livestream for copyright gives the channel a strike. The channel loses livestream access for seven days after the first such strike; another copyright strike makes the livestream restriction last 14 days. YouTube Help: Understand copyright strikes

Check these things before you repeat the video

  1. Identify what was cleared. Find out whether it was a Content ID claim release, written permission or license, a counter-notification outcome, or merely an earlier upload that remained available. Do not treat those as interchangeable.
  2. Verify the permission covers this use. Check for live streaming and repeat or rebroadcast rights, the channel or account, territory, dates, and all third-party elements in the video, including music. A right to upload one recording does not necessarily answer whether a live rebroadcast is covered.
  3. Request Content ID allowlisting. If you are using licensed third-party content, ask the rights owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist before you start. YouTube specifically advises this because a stream can be interrupted without it, even when the content is licensed.
  4. Keep evidence of the permission and allowlist request. Retain the license or written authorization and the rights owner’s response so you can verify what was granted if a dispute arises.
  5. Check YouTube Studio if the stream is interrupted. Review the channel dashboard for the stated restriction or strike information. Do not assume a live match warning, an archived Content ID claim, and a copyright strike are the same event.

If YouTube removes the stream or issues a strike

First establish whether YouTube reports a Content ID claim, a live interruption, or a copyright strike. YouTube says strikes can be resolved by completing Copyright School and waiting 90 days, obtaining a retraction from the claimant, or submitting a valid counter notification. A counter notification is a legal process, not a routine appeal; use it only if you believe the removal was a mistake or your use qualifies for a copyright exception. YouTube says it cannot decide whether you should dispute a claim, and suggests seeking legal advice if you are unsure. See YouTube’s strike guidance and claim dispute guidance.

Owning a copy of a video or song is not, by itself, a valid reason to dispute a copyright claim. Make sure you have the necessary rights before disputing or rebroadcasting.

Sources and scope

This article summarizes YouTube Help guidance accessed October 3, 2026. The policy pages cited above do not establish that any prior cleared upload automatically authorizes a later livestream, nor can they determine the scope of a particular license or resolve an individual legal dispute. YouTube reported that it received copyright removal requests for over 16 million videos in 2022; that figure is about videos named in requests, not livestream strikes, valid requests, or the likelihood that a particular rebroadcast will be removed.
