Keep the saved loop file and the live stream settings separate. The file’s size depends mainly on its average bitrate and duration; YouTube’s live bitrate guidance applies to the stream you send to YouTube, not to the prerecorded file. Encode a compact 4K source offline, then loop it in OBS and configure the live output for YouTube’s ingest requirements.
Why the source file and live bitrate are different
A prerecorded file is compressed for storage and playback. When a live encoder plays it, the encoder produces a separate output stream using the live settings you choose. A 30 Mbps live recommendation does not require a 30 Mbps source file, and a compact file does not make the live output bitrate lower by itself.

YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers. That means your job is to provide an ingest stream that meets YouTube’s guidance while preserving enough detail in the source to look good after playback and encoding. YouTube’s published live encoder settings are at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Resolution and frame rate
If you need 4K delivery, keep the source at 3840×2160. Use the source’s native frame rate where appropriate; 30 fps is a sensible choice for footage that does not need 60 fps motion. YouTube supports live frame rates up to 60 fps.

Codec and visual quality
Choose an offline codec that your playback and live workflow can decode. H.264 is a conservative choice when compatibility matters. More efficient modern codecs may produce a smaller source at similar apparent quality, but only use one your entire playback and encoding chain supports.
There is no universally correct source bitrate. Fast motion, fine textures, gradients, and image noise tend to reveal compression artifacts sooner than static, clean footage. Encode a representative section, inspect it at full resolution, and adjust until the file size and visible quality are acceptable. Watch for blocking, banding, smearing, and loss of fine detail, especially on a large 4K display.
Estimate the file size before encoding
For a constant or average bitrate, use this approximate decimal estimate:

Approximate file size in GB = (video Mbps + audio Mbps) × duration in seconds ÷ 8,000
| Example encode | Approximate size |
|---|---|
| 10-minute file averaging 20 Mbps total | About 1.5 GB |
| 10-minute file averaging 10 Mbps total | About 0.75 GB |
These are arithmetic estimates, not measured benchmarks. Variable-rate encoding, audio, container overhead, and encoder behavior affect the final size. If you have a target file size, calculate the average total bitrate that would fit it, encode a sample, and check the actual result.
To reduce file size, lower the source’s average video bitrate, avoid an unnecessary frame rate, or use a more efficient codec supported by your workflow. Do not lower bitrate blindly: check the actual footage for artifacts.

Set YouTube’s live output separately
The following are YouTube’s published recommendations for the live input stream, not target bitrates for the saved loop file. Choose the row matching the live output codec and frame rate.
| Live output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 4K / 2160p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| 4K / 2160p at 30 fps, H.264 | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 4K / 2160p at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| 4K / 2160p at 60 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs. Although the table’s recommended rates for AV1 and HEVC are lower than for H.264, your encoder and playback workflow must support the selected codec. YouTube’s recommendations can change, so check its current guidance before configuring a new stream.
Rate control, keyframes, transport, and color
- Rate control: Use CBR for the live output.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Transport: Use RTMPS where supported; YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS.
- SDR: YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit.
- HDR: YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC and 10-bit. Its guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR.
YouTube Help also states: “For 4K / 2160, the option to improve for low latency is not available.”

Loop the file in OBS and test the full stream
- Add the recording: In OBS, add a Media Source, select your local video file, and enable Loop. OBS documents MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM among common supported formats. See OBS Media Sources.
- For a playlist: Use the VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. OBS notes that this source requires VLC to be installed; Loop Playlist is enabled by default.
- Configure the live encoder: Set the output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval independently of the source file’s bitrate. Enter your YouTube stream key in the streaming software; do not share it publicly.
- Check upload capacity: Your connection needs enough sustained upload capacity for the configured live output. A local file looping successfully does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Test representative content: YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion like the actual program. Start a test, review stream health and any messages in YouTube’s Live Control Room, and correct problems before relying on the loop.
For the YouTube encoder setup flow, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Do not confuse live bitrate with upload bitrate
YouTube publishes a separate table for prerecorded video uploads. Its SDR 4K upload recommendations are 35–45 Mbps at standard frame rates and 53–68 Mbps at high frame rates; those are upload figures, not live ingest targets or mandatory bitrates for a loop source file. See YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.

- The file is larger than expected: Check the actual average bitrate and duration, including audio. Try a lower average video bitrate or a more efficient supported source codec, then inspect the result rather than assuming the file-size estimate is exact.
- The picture looks blocky, smeared, or banded: The source may be compressed too heavily for its motion, texture, gradients, or noise. Increase source quality or bitrate and compare a representative full-resolution section.
- OBS will not play the file: Confirm the format is supported by the Media Source and that the file plays locally. For VLC Video playlists, install VLC.
- The video plays locally but YouTube reports stream issues: Check the live output settings, sustained upload capacity, stream key, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Local playback and healthy ingest are separate checks.
- The stream drops: Check YouTube’s status and stream-health information, then restore the encoder connection and verify the loop resumes. A local OBS setup depends on the computer and connection remaining available.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube loop without keeping OBS, a computer, or a home connection running, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded video; it does not stream from a camera.
There is nothing that has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
