Add -initbackup to the Soulmask dedicated-server launch command. The switch takes no value and is intended to create a world backup during startup, before the newly started session loads the world into memory. It is a practical restore point after a game update or before maintenance, but the behavior is documented by consistent third-party guides rather than an official Soulmask developer reference. After enabling it, confirm the result in your server log and in the backup directory.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Soulmask servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What -initbackup does
-initbackup is a startup launch parameter for a Soulmask dedicated server. Put it on the same command line that starts the server executable. It does not require an equals sign, a number, or a file path:

Guides describing the switch say that the server creates a backup when it starts. The useful moment is immediately before the new session loads the world into memory. If a patch, configuration change, mod change, or unexpected shutdown damages the next session, that startup copy can provide a known restore point from before the session began.
This is a one-time action per server start. It is not a schedule expression, and it does not specify how often the server saves during play. Those jobs are handled by separate parameters. A server that stays online for days will not create another startup backup until it is restarted.

Why use a startup backup
A defined point before risky changes
Restarting a persistent world is often when administrators apply game updates, change launch options, install or remove server-side content, or alter configuration. A startup backup gives you a copy made before that new process begins using the world. If the new session behaves incorrectly, you can stop the server and investigate without immediately losing the previous state.
A complement to, not a replacement for, scheduled backups
Startup protection covers the boundary between sessions. It does not protect every minute of a long-running session. A server can still lose progress made since the last disk backup, and a startup backup may be too old for a problem that appears hours after the restart. Use the startup copy alongside the server’s normal save and disk-backup intervals.
A safety step after updates
The guides specifically describe the flag as useful after game updates. Treat it as a reversible safety measure: retain the pre-session copy, start the updated server, observe its behavior, and only then decide whether the old copy can be archived or removed.
Startup backup versus interval settings
Do not confuse -initbackup with the two interval options commonly listed in Soulmask server guides. They control different events:

| Parameter | Event it controls | Value listed by guides | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
-initbackup |
Creates a backup at server startup. | No value; the switch is present or absent. | One startup action for each launch. No official developer confirmation or exact log message has been located. |
-saving |
Memory save interval. | 300 seconds is listed as a default in guides. | The value is guide-reported, not an official published default. One example uses -saving=600, so do not assume that example is a verified standard. |
-backup |
Disk backup interval. | 900 seconds (15 minutes) is listed as a default in guides. | This is separate from the startup copy and should be treated as guide-reported until confirmed on your installation. |
Changing -saving or -backup does not enable startup backups. Conversely, adding -initbackup does not establish a five-minute, 15-minute, or any other recurring schedule.
Before you edit the launch command
- Know how the server is started. It may be a batch file, shell script, service definition, control-panel field, scheduled task, or a shortcut. Edit the source that actually launches the process; changing an unused shortcut will have no effect.
- Stop the running server cleanly. Do not modify arguments while the dedicated-server process is still writing the world. A clean stop reduces the chance that you mistake an in-progress save for a startup backup.
- Keep a copy of the current launch line. Save the original text somewhere outside the startup script so you can remove the flag or recover from a typo.
- Confirm write access. The account running the server must be able to create files in the world-save location. A parameter cannot produce a backup if the process is denied access or the disk is full.
- Plan how you will verify it. Have the server log open and know where the world files are stored before the first test restart.
How to add -initbackup
1. Open the real startup definition
Find the script, service, shortcut, or hosting-panel setting that starts the dedicated server. Look for the complete command, including the executable and any existing options. Do not create a second, competing startup command unless you intentionally run a separate instance; two instances pointing at one world can cause file conflicts.

Place -initbackup after the existing options, separated by a space. The generic form is:
YOUR_EXISTING_SERVER_COMMAND EXISTING_OPTIONS -initbackup
For a script that already has several arguments, leave those arguments unchanged and add the switch at the end. Do not write -initbackup=true, -initbackup=1, or -initbackup=600; the guides describe it as a flag that takes no value.

3. Save the file or panel setting
Save the edited script or apply the hosting-panel change. If a panel regenerates startup commands from a separate configuration page, make the change in that page rather than editing a generated command that will be overwritten on the next restart.
4. Start the server normally
Launch the same way you normally do. Do not add a second copy of the switch through another layer unless you know that the resulting command accepts duplicate flags. Wait until the server has completed its normal startup sequence before checking files.

5. Record the test
Write down the restart time and the world name or directory you expected to change. That timestamp gives you a simple comparison point when you inspect the backup folder and log.
Where the backup is expected to appear
Third-party guides list this backup directory:
WSSavedWorldsDedicatedLevel01_Mainbackup
The main world database is listed as world.db. The path should be treated as an installation-dependent guide, not a universal guarantee. Confirm the actual WS root, world name, and directory casing on your server. A different installation location, a renamed world, or a host that relocates save data can make the expected path differ.

Look at the directory before and after a controlled restart. Compare file timestamps and names rather than assuming that a folder’s existence proves the flag worked. If the folder was already present, a new file or changed timestamp is stronger evidence than the folder alone.
How to verify that the flag worked
Check the server log
There is no verified, official log line for -initbackup. After the restart, search the current log for wording related to backup, world save, initialization, or file creation. Do not rely on one exact phrase copied from a guide; builds and hosting wrappers can format messages differently. The absence of a recognizable message is not proof that the switch failed, but it means the filesystem check becomes essential.
Check the backup directory
Open the listed backup directory after startup finishes. Compare its contents and modification times with the state you recorded before the restart. If a new backup appears at approximately the launch time, that is practical confirmation for your installation.
Test with a deliberate, low-risk restart
For a first test, use a maintenance window rather than restarting during an active play session. Stop the server, start it with the flag, wait for the world to load, and inspect the files. Avoid making gameplay changes solely to test the mechanism; the goal is to verify creation, not to manufacture a recoverable failure.
Best Value
Keep evidence from the first successful run
Save the launch line and note the resulting path, timestamp, and filename pattern in your administrator notes. Backup naming and rotation behavior are not established by the available guides, so local observations are more useful than assumptions when you need to recover later.
What the flag does not tell you
The available guides do not establish several operational details. They do not provide an official retention policy, guarantee a particular filename for each historical copy, state whether old copies are rotated or overwritten, or document compression and maximum storage usage. They also do not provide an official confirmation that every server build honors the switch. Plan around those unknowns:
- Inspect the directory after more than one restart to see whether copies accumulate or a previous file is replaced.
- Monitor free disk space if your server restarts frequently.
- Copy important backup sets to separate storage according to your own retention policy.
- Do not delete older copies until you understand your installation’s naming and rotation behavior.
Using startup and interval backups together
A practical protection plan assigns each setting a distinct role. Let -initbackup capture the pre-session state. Let the disk-backup interval create additional points during a long session. Let the memory-save interval control how often in-memory progress is written. Because guide-reported defaults are not official guarantees, document the values actually present in your launch command and confirm their effects in your own logs.
For example, an administrator might leave existing interval options unchanged and add only -initbackup before an update. Another administrator might deliberately set an interval after testing, but should treat a guide’s example such as -saving=600 as an example to validate, not as a universal recommendation. Changing several options at once makes troubleshooting harder because you cannot tell which change affected the result.
Update and maintenance workflow
- Announce a maintenance window. Give players time to leave the world and avoid writes during shutdown.
- Stop the dedicated server cleanly. Confirm that the process has exited before touching world files.
- Confirm the startup line contains
-initbackup. Check the command source used by your service or panel, not merely a copied note. - Apply the game or configuration update. Keep a record of what changed.
- Start the server with the switch present. Wait for normal initialization.
- Verify the log and backup directory. Record the observed timestamp and file names.
- Observe the world before declaring success. Check that players can connect and that expected world data is present.
- Preserve the pre-session copy. Do not remove it until the updated session has been checked and your retention policy allows cleanup.
Restoring a world safely
The known file layout identifies world.db as the main world save, but the available guides do not provide an official, build-specific restoration procedure. Use a conservative process:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Stop the dedicated server and verify that no server process is still running.
- Make a separate copy of the current world directory before replacing anything. This preserves a way back if the selected backup is wrong.
- Identify the backup created before the problematic startup by comparing timestamps and contents in the backup directory.
- Follow the file layout used by your installation to place the chosen copy where the server expects the active world. Do not improvise filenames or move files while the server is running.
- Start the server and inspect the log and world state. If the server does not load the expected state, stop it and restore the safety copy you made in step two.
Because naming and rotation are not officially documented here, do not assume that the newest file is always the correct restore point. Date and label your own exported copies when possible.
Troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Likely check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| No new file or timestamp change after restart | The running process may not use the edited command. | Inspect the service, panel, or scheduled task that actually launched the process, then confirm -initbackup appears in that command. |
| The server starts but the expected folder is unchanged | The save root or world name may differ. | Locate the active WSSavedWorldsDedicated tree and confirm the world directory before judging the flag. |
| A startup option appears to be ignored | Syntax may have been changed. | Use the bare switch with no equals sign or value, separated from neighboring options by a space. |
| Backup creation fails with an access or write error | The service account or disk may not permit file creation. | Check directory permissions, available disk space, and whether security software blocked the write. Correct the host issue and repeat a controlled restart. |
| Only one backup remains after repeated restarts | The installation may overwrite or rotate files. | Observe names and timestamps over multiple tests; do not assume historical retention that you have not verified. |
| The panel removes the flag | The panel may regenerate the command. | Add the switch in the panel’s persistent startup-argument field or template, then restart and verify again. |
| The world is inconsistent after a crash | A startup copy cannot capture changes made after the last backup. | Use the latest verified disk backup or startup copy that predates the problem, and keep the current files as a separate safety copy before restoring. |
Operational checklist
- Launch line: the command used in production ends with (or otherwise includes)
-initbackup. - Syntax: the flag has no value and is separated from other options.
- Timing: the server was stopped cleanly before the test restart.
- Log: the post-start log was reviewed for backup or world-initialization activity.
- Files: the expected backup directory and
world.dblocation were confirmed on this installation. - Storage: available disk space and write permissions were checked.
- Intervals:
-savingand-backupare documented separately from the startup flag. - Recovery: at least one known-good copy is protected from accidental overwrite before updates or major configuration changes.
Bottom line
To request a world backup whenever a Soulmask dedicated server starts, append -initbackup—with no value—to the command that actually launches the server. Treat the behavior as supported by consistent third-party guides, not by an official developer specification. Confirm it on your host by checking the post-restart log and the installation’s backup directory, then retain the resulting copy as a pre-session restore point alongside your normal interval backups.
