A Terraria server costs anywhere from $0 to about $25 per month in 2026. Host & Play or a computer you already own can cost nothing beyond electricity and internet service. Most managed hosts charge roughly $5–$25 monthly; concrete 2–6 GB examples are $4.99, $9.99 and $14.99 per month. A four-player vanilla world normally fits the budget tier, while Calamity, Thorium or a large tModLoader collection generally needs 4–6 GB or more. The Terraria game itself is a separate purchase.

2026 Terraria server prices at a glance

The right price depends on how the server runs, not just how many people join. A short co-op session, a privately managed dedicated machine and a continuously available modded server are different products.

Hosting method Typical 2026 cost Best fit Main trade-off
Host & Play $0 hosting fee Occasional co-op with friends The host’s game session and computer must stay available; networking can require extra configuration.
Self-hosted dedicated server $0 incremental cost if you already have a suitable always-on computer; electricity and internet are extra Technical users with an existing PC or VPS You handle updates, port forwarding, backups, security and uptime.
Budget managed host About $4–$8 per month Small vanilla worlds and roughly 2–8 players Shared resources and fewer premium support features are common.
Standard managed host About $8–$15 per month Large worlds, 8–16 players or light mods You pay more for RAM and headroom.
Performance or modded host About $15–$25 per month Calamity, Thorium, large tModLoader lists or public servers Higher recurring cost; verify CPU, backups and renewal terms.

The $5–$25 range is a 2026 market guide from Supercraft Host, divided into $4–$8 budget, $8–$15 standard and $15–$25 performance tiers. Those are market bands, not a universal tariff: taxes, currency conversion, promotional periods and renewal prices can change the amount you actually pay.

When a Terraria server is free

Host & Play

Host & Play uses one player’s normal Terraria game session as the server. There is no separate hosting bill, so it is the cheapest choice for a group that plays at the same time. The host’s game and computer must be running for everyone else to connect. If the host quits, loses their connection or shuts down the computer, the session ends. Depending on your router and platform, friends outside your local network may also need network or port-forwarding changes.

This arrangement is ideal for a few friends who schedule the same sessions and do not need a world available while the usual host is away. It is less suitable for a persistent community world or a group spread across time zones.

Self-hosting a dedicated server

A dedicated server runs separately from a player’s in-game session. If you already own a computer that can remain on, the incremental hosting price can be $0; electricity, bandwidth and any existing VPS fee still count as real costs. You retain the world files and control every setting, but you also become responsible for maintenance.

The official Terraria Wiki lists 500 MB of free RAM for a small world, a default maximum of 16 players (which can be changed), and TCP port 7777 as the default server port. These are baseline figures, not a guarantee that every mod list or world will run comfortably at that size. Residential internet connections may require port forwarding, and some providers use carrier-grade NAT that prevents inbound connections without a relay or different service.

What managed Terraria hosting includes

With managed hosting, a provider supplies an always-on machine, a control panel and some combination of automated installation, backups, monitoring and support. You pay a recurring fee instead of trading your own time for administration. The useful comparison is the resources and services attached to the plan, not the headline price alone.

Example plan Advertised memory Advertised monthly price Workload indication
GamezServers entry plan 2 GB $4.99/month Vanilla through lighter workloads
GamezServers middle plan 4 GB $9.99/month Large vanilla worlds or light-to-moderate mods
GamezServers upper example 6 GB $14.99/month Heavier modded workloads
HostPanel pricing reference Per GB £2.50 per GB per month RAM-based pricing; the final bill depends on the selected allocation and any add-ons

GamezServers’ figures are provider examples published for 2026, not an industry-wide price list. HostPanel’s £2.50-per-GB figure was checked in August 2026 and is quoted in pounds, so exchange rates and taxes affect a buyer paying in another currency. Check whether a displayed price is introductory, whether it renews at a higher rate, and whether backups, extra storage or a dedicated IP cost more.

How much RAM your Terraria server needs

RAM is usually the first capacity number to compare, but CPU performance, storage speed and the behavior of individual mods also matter. Player count alone is a poor sizing rule: a few players exploring a large, heavily modified world can create more load than many players in a small vanilla world.

  • Small vanilla group: Start around 2 GB for two to eight players, especially when the world is small or medium and the mod list is empty.
  • Large vanilla world or up to 16 players: A 4 GB plan gives more room for world data, exploration and simultaneous activity than the smallest tier.
  • Lightly modded tModLoader: 4 GB is a practical starting point, then monitor memory use and tick performance after adding the complete mod list.
  • Calamity, Thorium or a large tModLoader collection: Budget for 4–6 GB or more. Mod dependencies, extra content and world-generation work can push usage above a nominal plan limit.

The 500 MB figure from the official wiki describes free RAM for a small world under baseline conditions. It should not be interpreted as a recommendation for a modern, heavily modded public server. Leave headroom so the operating system, server process, backups and monitoring do not compete for every megabyte.

Choosing the cheapest option that will work

Four-player vanilla group

A 2 GB budget plan is normally the sensible paid starting point. Using the $4.99 GamezServers example, four players would split the base fee at approximately $1.25 each per month before tax and currency conversion. Host & Play remains cheaper if everyone can play only when the host is online.

Eight to 16 players on a large vanilla world

Choose a plan in the $8–$15 standard band or around 4 GB in the GamezServers examples. The extra memory provides room for exploration and concurrent activity. Confirm the provider’s stated player limit, CPU allocation and backup policy rather than assuming that a larger RAM number guarantees a higher slot count.

Modded cooperative world

For Calamity, Thorium or a long tModLoader list, begin at 4 GB and consider 6 GB if the world is large or several players explore different areas at once. The $14.99 6 GB example works out to approximately $3.75 per person for four players, before tax and currency conversion. Keep a copy of the exact mod versions and configuration files so a failed update can be rolled back.

Public or always-available server

Use the $15–$25 performance band as a planning budget when uptime, support, scheduled backups and CPU headroom matter. Ask about hardware isolation, DDoS protection, backup retention, restore procedures and the provider’s policy for sudden traffic or abuse. A cheap plan that repeatedly runs out of memory can cost more in lost worlds and administrative time than a slightly larger plan.

Self-hosting a dedicated Terraria server: setup checklist

  1. Select an always-on machine. Use a computer or VPS with enough free RAM for the world, the Terraria server process and the operating system. For a small vanilla world, the official baseline is 500 MB free RAM; allocate more for larger worlds and mods.
  2. Install matching server software. Keep the dedicated-server files on the same Terraria version used by every player. Modded servers also need the matching tModLoader and mod versions.
  3. Create or select the world. Decide world size and difficulty before inviting players, and store the world file in a location included in your backup plan.
  4. Configure the server. Set the world, password, player limit and port in the server configuration. The default TCP port is 7777, and the default player maximum is 16.
  5. Configure network access. On a home router, forward TCP 7777 to the server computer and allow the server through the operating system firewall. Test from outside your home network; a local connection alone does not prove that internet players can join.
  6. Automate startup and recovery. Configure the process to start after a reboot and restart after a crash. A managed panel may provide this automatically; self-hosting requires you to create the service or scheduled task.
  7. Back up before changes. Copy the world and configuration files on a schedule and keep at least one backup off the server machine. Test restoring a copy before a major mod or Terraria version update.
  8. Monitor real usage. Watch memory, CPU, disk space, latency and crash logs during busy exploration. Increase resources only when measurements or symptoms show that the current allocation is insufficient.

Self-hosting avoids a hosting subscription only when you already have suitable hardware and connectivity. Electricity, a potentially higher internet plan, replacement hardware and your own maintenance time are the hidden line items.

Costs that are easy to miss

  • Renewal pricing: A first-month promotion may not be the recurring rate. Record the renewal price and cancellation terms before ordering.
  • Taxes and currency conversion: The quoted dollar and pound figures are pre-tax examples unless the provider says otherwise. Your payment processor or bank may add conversion fees.
  • Backups and storage: Some plans include one backup; additional snapshots or larger storage can be add-ons. A backup that cannot be restored is not useful, so check retention and restore access.
  • Mod support: tModLoader installation, one-click mod updates and help diagnosing dependency errors vary by provider. Verify the supported Terraria and tModLoader versions.
  • Network and support: A low-cost shared node may have less CPU headroom or slower support than a performance tier. Ask how incidents, migrations and outages are handled.
  • Self-host electricity: An always-on desktop consumes power continuously. Compare its monthly electricity cost with the managed plan you would otherwise buy.

Do players need to buy Terraria separately?

Yes. Server hosting does not supply the game license. The current Steam listing prices a single Terraria copy at $9.99 and a four-pack at $29.99. Those are game-purchase prices, separate from the recurring server bill, and store taxes or regional pricing can alter the checkout total. Every player must use a compatible, legitimately owned client; buying a server plan does not grant additional game copies.

A practical buying checklist

  • Estimate world size, mod list and peak simultaneous players rather than choosing by slots alone.
  • Start with 2 GB for a small vanilla group, 4 GB for a large or lightly modded world, and 6 GB or more for demanding mod collections.
  • Compare the renewal price, billing currency, taxes, cancellation policy and any setup fee.
  • Confirm that the plan supports your Terraria and tModLoader versions.
  • Check CPU allocation, storage type, backup frequency, retention and one-click restore.
  • Ask whether the advertised RAM is dedicated or shared and whether upgrades can be made without rebuilding the world.
  • Verify the server location and expected latency for the people who will play most often.
  • For self-hosting, test TCP port 7777 from an external connection and document your recovery steps before inviting others.

For most private groups, the decision is straightforward: use Host & Play at no hosting charge when sessions are occasional, choose roughly $5–$8 monthly for a small always-on vanilla world, and move toward $8–$25 as world size, mods, uptime expectations and support requirements increase.
