To enable Wi-Fi airtime fairness, sign in to your router or access point, open its wireless advanced settings, turn on Airtime Fairness (or a similarly named control), and save or apply the change. The exact menu—and whether the feature is available at all—depends on your model, hardware revision, and firmware. Check your device’s official manual before following another model’s steps.
What airtime fairness does
Wi-Fi airtime fairness manages how wireless transmission time is shared among clients. It is not a setting that divides your internet bandwidth equally. Depending on the vendor’s implementation, it can reduce the airtime consumed by slower clients so faster clients can transfer more data. That may help some devices, but it does not guarantee faster performance for every client or application.

NETGEAR’s RAX5 manual says the aim is to keep the slowest Wi-Fi clients from controlling network responsiveness. TP-Link describes the tradeoff as giving slower devices less network time so faster ones can receive better service. The precise scheduling policy can vary between implementations. Before you change the setting
- Find the router or access point’s exact model number and hardware revision, usually on its label or in its administration interface.
- Look up that exact model on the manufacturer’s support site and check its manual for the airtime fairness control and supported firmware.
- Note the current setting before changing it. If the feature is unavailable, do not assume the device is faulty or borrow instructions from another model family.
- If you use a separate access point, consult its instructions rather than the router’s; their controls and interfaces may differ.
General steps for enabling airtime fairness
- Connect to your home network. Use Ethernet if possible, especially if a wireless settings change might interrupt your connection.
- Open the router or access point administration interface in a browser and sign in. Use the address and credentials specified in that device’s manual or setup information.
- Open the wireless, advanced wireless, or professional wireless settings page. Look for Airtime Fairness, Air Time Fairness, or a closely related label.
- If the interface offers separate bands or radios, select the one you intend to configure and check whether the control must be enabled separately for each.
- Enable the setting, then choose Save, Apply, or the equivalent button. Allow the device to apply the change; reconnect if your wireless session drops.
- Test the devices and applications you care about. If performance worsens or a device has trouble, return to the same control, restore its previous state, and consult the manufacturer’s guidance for your exact model.

What to expect after enabling it
Assess performance on the devices and applications that matter in your home rather than assuming the change will benefit everything. In a TP-Link FAQ updated July 23, 2024, the company reports an example in which an 802.11g client measured 28.075 Mbps and an 802.11n client 18.521 Mbps with airtime fairness disabled; with it enabled, the reported results were 12.214 Mbps and 116.538 Mbps, respectively. TP-Link also reports aggregate throughput rising from 46 Mbps to 128 Mbps in that example. These are vendor-reported figures, not an independent test or a prediction for another network.
