To turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) for an Epic Games account, sign in, open Account > Password and security, and select Set up beside a method. Verify with the code or approval prompt for that method. Epic recommends an authenticator app for the strongest protection; save the backup codes provided during setup so you have a recovery option if you lose access to your phone.
How to turn on 2FA for an Epic Games account
- Sign in to your Epic Games account and open Account > Password and security.
- Find Two-Factor Authentication and select Set up next to your preferred method. The methods shown can vary by region and account.
- Complete the requested verification. Email and SMS send a code; an authenticator app provides a code or approval prompt. Epic Authenticator uses number matching in the Epic Games App or Epic Games Store App.
- Check that the account page shows the method as active, and look for Epic’s confirmation email. If you set up more than one method, open the menu beside the method you want to use by default and select Make my primary 2FA method.
Epic lists 2FA as a requirement for certain actions, including claiming some free games on the Epic Games Store, sending Fortnite gifts, and entering Fortnite competitive events. It does not mean every free game, gift, or competition requires 2FA.

Choose a method you can keep using
Epic offers its built-in authenticator, third-party authenticator apps, email codes, and SMS codes. Its account-security guidance says, “Using an authenticator app provides the strongest protection.” Choose a method you can reliably access, and consider setting up more than one so a single lost device or unavailable phone number does not leave you without a way to verify.

Keep a way back into your account
Epic says backup codes are provided when authenticator-based 2FA is first enabled. Store them somewhere you can reach if the phone is lost, but not solely on that phone. If you are stopped at the 2FA prompt, select Try another way and use email verification or enter an eight-digit backup code, if available. After signing in, review or change methods under Account > Password and security.

- Use a unique password for Epic and a different unique password for the associated email account.
- Enable 2FA on the email account and on linked console or social accounts where applicable.
- If you change the phone number used for SMS, Epic’s recovery guidance says to remove the SMS method and set it up again with the new number.
Fix common code and setup problems
Email code does not arrive
First confirm that Epic is asking you to verify by email; your active method may instead be an authenticator app or SMS. Wait a few minutes, refresh the inbox, and check spam. If the message has not arrived after ten minutes, use Epic’s contact-support route.
SMS setup is unavailable or a text does not arrive
Epic says SMS availability can depend on your region or phone number. Use another method offered on the account page, such as an authenticator app. Its regional list is subject to change: the current support page names Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mexico, Azerbaijan, Senegal, Republic of Niger, and Russia as places where SMS 2FA is unavailable. Epic states Russia’s SMS method was disabled in January 2026; for the other listed countries, the page gives August 31 without establishing the year. Check Epic’s current SMS availability guidance and the methods actually displayed in your account before relying on SMS.

Phone or authenticator is lost
At the sign-in prompt, select Try another way and choose email verification or a saved backup code if offered. Once you regain access, update the methods on the Password and security page.

The account is a Cabined Account
Epic notes that some features may differ for a Cabined Account if a parent has not helped set it up. If the setting is missing, follow Epic’s setup guidance and its Cabined Account instructions rather than assuming the setting is available.

Secure the accounts connected to Epic
2FA is one part of account security. Keep the email address on the Epic account under your control, use unique passwords for Epic and email, and turn on 2FA for linked console or social accounts where possible. These steps matter especially if your Epic account depends on those services for sign-in or recovery.
