The supported options include DLSS Frame Generation Model Upgrade and the Transformer Model Upgrade for DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA. DLSS Multi Frame Generation is different: NVIDIA identifies it as an RTX 50-series feature.
Which RTX 50-series features work on an RTX 40-series GPU?
NVIDIA’s app can apply certain DLSS model upgrades to supported games on RTX 40-series cards. These update how an existing, supported DLSS feature works; they do not add every feature associated with newer GPU hardware.

| Feature | RTX 40-series availability | What must be true |
|---|---|---|
| Frame Generation Model Upgrade | Supported by NVIDIA’s app override | The game must support Frame Generation and have it enabled in-game; the title must also be compatible with the override. |
| Transformer Model Upgrade | Supported for DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, and DLAA on RTX GPUs | The relevant DLSS feature must be supported by the game and active in-game, and the title must be compatible with the override. |
| DLSS Multi Frame Generation | Not enabled on RTX 40-series by NVIDIA’s documented override | NVIDIA describes it as powered by RTX 50-series and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores. NVIDIA’s DLSS overview currently describes generating up to five frames per rendered frame on those GPUs; that capability is not a promised result for every game or system. |
NVIDIA’s January 6, 2025 announcement described the initial Multi Frame Generation implementation as generating up to three additional frames per traditionally rendered frame on RTX 50-series hardware. Its later overview gives an “up to five” figure, so the numbers refer to different descriptions at different dates, not an RTX 40-series setting. NVIDIA’s launch announcement
How to enable supported DLSS overrides
- Install the current NVIDIA app and a supported Game Ready Driver. Exact version requirements can change; check NVIDIA’s current app and driver release notes rather than relying on an old version number.
- Open the NVIDIA app and go to Graphics.
- Choose the game in Program Settings.
- Review the available Driver Settings and DLSS Override controls. NVIDIA may change labels or placement between app releases.
- Select only an override for a DLSS feature the game supports and has enabled in its own settings. Apply the change, then launch the game and confirm the relevant in-game feature remains enabled.
NVIDIA describes these overrides as applying to selected or compatible titles, not as a universal switch. The NVIDIA app announcement and NVIDIA app information explain the official route; the options shown for an individual game are the practical compatibility check.

What about NVIDIA Smooth Motion?
NVIDIA says Smooth Motion support extends to RTX 40-series GPUs when the current NVIDIA app and Game Ready Driver updates are installed. Because the required versions can change, verify them in NVIDIA’s current release notes and check whether the option appears for your game. Smooth Motion support does not mean Multi Frame Generation has been enabled on RTX 40-series hardware.
What to avoid
Do not replace game DLL files, use unofficial unlockers, or edit BIOS or registry settings to claim RTX 50-only features. NVIDIA’s documented method is the app’s per-game override for supported DLSS options. Its official materials do not provide a method for activating Multi Frame Generation on RTX 40-series GPUs, and they do not establish the safety of third-party modifications.

When an RTX 50-series upgrade is relevant
If Multi Frame Generation itself is the goal, the documented hardware route is an RTX 50-series GPU. It is not necessary to upgrade just to use the supported Frame Generation or Transformer model upgrades available to RTX 40-series owners through compatible games and NVIDIA’s app.
