How to Access Your UGREEN NAS Remotely and Secure It

UGREENlink is the simplest remote-access option for many owners, while DDNS and Tailscale suit different needs. Learn the setup trade-offs and the security controls that still matter.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most owners, UGREENlink is the simplest way to access a UGREEN NAS away from home: UGREEN says it does not require manual router port forwarding. Secure the NAS account first with a unique password and account-level two-factor authentication (2FA). Choose DDNS only if you need direct endpoint control and can manage public exposure; consider Tailscale for private-network access if your NAS model supports Docker. None of these paths makes every NAS service safe by default.

Choose a remote-access method

The right option depends on how much control you need and whether you can manage the network and device requirements. UGREENlink is the built-in, lower-configuration route; DDNS provides a direct endpoint but requires router configuration; Tailscale provides private-network access in UGREEN’s Docker-based setup.

Method Best fit Requirements and exposure Main caution
UGREENlink Owners who want the simplest built-in route UGREEN account binding and a compatible UGOS Pro release; UGREEN says manual port forwarding is not required. Secure both the UGREEN account and NAS account. Remote access gives the signed-in NAS account access according to its permissions.
DDNS Advanced users who need control over a direct endpoint or domain A publicly reachable IP, DDNS provider credentials and domain, a stable NAS local IP, and router port forwarding. It increases public exposure and configuration responsibility. CGNAT or double NAT may prevent conventional forwarding; provider choices can change.
Tailscale Users who want private-network access and can manage Docker and client devices A Docker-capable NAS, Tailscale account and client devices; UGREEN describes the setup as generally requiring no inbound router forwarding. Not every model supports it: UGREEN’s guide names the DH2300 as not supporting Docker. It does not replace NAS authentication.

Check the current UGOS Pro interface and documentation for your model and release before following a path: menus, provider options, and capabilities can vary.

Before enabling remote access

  • Update UGOS Pro and review which users, folders, and functions each account can access. Give accounts only the permissions they need.
  • Use a strong, unique password for each NAS account. Enable 2FA for administrative accounts before making the NAS remotely reachable.
  • If enabling 2FA, turn on automatic time synchronization on both the NAS and phone. UGREEN warns that a clock mismatch can cause one-time codes to be rejected.
  • Set a secure recovery email for 2FA and test a login before ending your current administrator session.

How to access your UGREEN NAS remotely

Use UGREENlink

  1. In UGOS Pro, open Control Panel > Device Connection > Remote access. Exact labels can differ by release.
  2. Enable UGREENlink, then bind or sign in to your UGREEN account when prompted.
  3. Choose a UGREENlink ID and apply the setting. UGOS Pro generates a web link and client ID.
  4. For browser access, open the generated link. In the UGREEN desktop or mobile client, enter the ID.
  5. Sign in with your NAS username and password. The UGREEN account binding does not replace NAS account authentication.

UGREEN’s guide says this route does not require manual router port forwarding. It still exposes access to the NAS account’s permissions, so account security and permission review remain important.

  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Use DDNS for direct endpoint control

  1. Compare the WAN IP shown in your router with the public IP visible from your network. If they differ, CGNAT, double NAT, or another upstream NAT may prevent ordinary port forwarding; ask your ISP if the cause is unclear.
  2. In the NAS DDNS settings, select a provider currently offered by your installed UGOS Pro version and enter the required provider credentials and domain details.
  3. Run the connection test. Reserve the NAS’s local IP address in the router so forwarding rules continue to point to the right device.
  4. Create only the router forwarding rules required for your intended service. Do not expose SMB, NFS, SSH, or broad management access directly to the internet.
  5. When retiring the setup, remove its forwarding rules and rotate relevant credentials or certificates.

DDNS does not itself overcome an ISP’s CGNAT or double NAT. If the router does not have a publicly reachable address, conventional inbound forwarding may not work.

Use Tailscale for private-network access

UGREEN describes Tailscale as a Docker-deployed option for compatible models, generally without inbound router forwarding. Follow the current UGREEN and Tailscale instructions for the exact container configuration and client setup; configuration details can vary. UGREEN’s guide gives examples for reaching web, client, and SMB services through the NAS’s Tailscale address.

A browser may show a self-signed certificate warning. That warning alone does not establish that the network path is public; if you use HTTPS regularly, configure a proper certificate rather than ignoring the warning.

How to secure your UGREEN NAS and home network

Protect logins and devices

  • Enable OTP-based 2FA for each account that needs it. UGREEN’s described setup uses an authenticator app such as Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator and a six-digit code, with an emergency verification email for recovery. Each NAS user configures their own account.
  • UGREEN’s documented setup flow does not offer SMS codes or hardware security keys as selectable factors. Confirm current options in your installed version, since the interface may change.
  • A trusted device may skip future OTP prompts. Trust only devices you control, and revoke old or lost trusted devices.
  • 2FA protects the UGOS Pro account login; it does not automatically add an OTP prompt to SMB, NFS, SSH, WebDAV, Docker applications, or third-party services. Configure each service’s own authentication and access controls.

Limit what is reachable

  • Disable services, router port forwards, UPnP mappings, Docker ports, and direct internet access that you do not need.
  • Keep SMB and NFS off the public internet. Restrict SSH to trusted networks and turn it off when administrative work is finished.
  • Use the UGOS Pro firewall to allow only the trusted source IPs and services you need, then deny unmatched inbound traffic where appropriate. Put narrow allow rules before broader deny rules, and reserve IPs when rules depend on them.
  • Test the firewall and remote-access changes before closing your current administrator session, so you can recover if a rule blocks legitimate access.

Monitor, update, and recover

  • Review successful and failed logins, administrator changes, new users, trusted devices, unfamiliar IP addresses, new apps or containers, and unexpected remote-access or firewall changes.
  • If an unfamiliar login succeeded, investigate it and rotate affected credentials.
  • Keep UGOS Pro and applications updated. Verify that alerts arrive and backups work; test recovery rather than assuming a configured backup is usable.
  • UGREEN describes Security Manager, snapshots, and Vault as UGOS Pro features. They complement, but do not replace, access controls or a tested backup plan.
