Satellite features work only on compatible phones and in supported regions. Before you travel beyond cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, check your exact phone, software, country and carrier, then learn the on-screen steps. On iPhone, ordinary satellite messaging and Emergency SOS are separate features. On Android, Satellite SOS instructions vary by manufacturer; Google’s documented flow is for Pixel phones.
Check whether your phone and location are supported
- iPhone: Apple’s satellite features require iPhone 14 or later, compatible software and an active SIM. Availability depends on the feature and region. Apple lists Messages via satellite in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Japan; the minimum iOS version differs for Mexico. Check Apple’s current Messages via satellite requirements and availability before a trip. SMS via satellite also depends on carrier support and may incur carrier fees. [c001]
- Google Pixel: Google documents Satellite SOS for Pixel phones. Check service status in your phone’s Settings and confirm that your country is on Google’s current Satellite SOS country list. The available country information does not establish a dependable model-by-model compatibility list, so verify your handset in Settings as well. [c004, c005]
- Samsung Galaxy and other Android phones: Android does not have one universal satellite setup. Samsung says satellite communication has been rolling out to select Galaxy flagship and A-series phones since 2025, with availability phased by network and regulatory conditions. Supported features vary by model, network and market; U.S. services described by Samsung involve a carrier partnership. Confirm eligibility with the phone maker and carrier for your exact model and country. [c006]
Satellite access is not a substitute for cellular service everywhere, and support for ordinary messages does not necessarily mean the phone supports emergency satellite contact.

Prepare an iPhone before you lose coverage
- Update to compatible iOS and confirm that the iPhone has an active SIM.
- Turn on iMessage while you still have cellular or Wi-Fi service if you want to use iMessage via satellite.
- Check whether your carrier supports SMS via satellite and whether it charges for those messages.
- Open Settings > Emergency SOS to try Apple’s emergency satellite demo. The demo is practice only; it does not contact emergency services. Apple also offers a general satellite connection demo from Control Center or Settings. Use demos only where the feature is available. [c001, c002, c003]
Review Apple’s regional availability before leaving coverage, since support can differ by feature and the iOS requirement is not identical in every listed country. [c001]

Send ordinary messages via satellite on iPhone
Messages via satellite is for regular messaging when the iPhone is outside both cellular and Wi-Fi coverage; it is not an emergency service. Open Messages when prompted and choose the option to use Messages via Satellite, then follow the on-screen directions to connect. Stay outside with as clear a view of the sky and horizon as possible. #1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Satellite messages can take longer than normal. Apple says a message might take around 30 seconds in ideal conditions, and longer under light or medium foliage. Heavy foliage or other obstructions may prevent a connection. Photos and group messages are among the message types not supported over satellite. [c001, c002]
Contact emergency services by satellite on iPhone
- Try calling 911 or the local emergency number first, even if your usual carrier network is unavailable.
- If the call does not connect, choose Emergency Text via Satellite.
- Tap Report Emergency and answer the on-screen questions.
- Follow the positioning prompts to connect and send the request. The iPhone shares relevant questionnaire information and location to help route the emergency request. [c003]
Apple’s demo can be opened at Settings > Emergency SOS, but it does not place a live emergency call. [c003]

Use Satellite SOS on a Google Pixel
Google’s documented Satellite SOS flow is for Pixel phones, not every Android device. Before losing coverage, check the service status in Settings and verify your country against Google’s Satellite SOS availability page. Keep Google Messages set as the default messaging app: Google says Satellite SOS will no longer be available if it is not the default. [c004, c005]
When you need help, start Satellite SOS from the phone’s emergency flow, complete the emergency questionnaire, choose whether to notify your emergency contacts, and follow the prompts to position the phone. Connection and response times can vary with location and site conditions. [c004]

- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
Improve the chance of a satellite connection
- Move outside and seek a clear view of the sky and horizon.
- Follow the phone’s positioning instructions; satellites move, so the phone may direct you to adjust its orientation.
- Move away from buildings, terrain, trees and other obstructions when it is safe to do so.
- Allow more time than you would for a cellular message. Low bandwidth and obstructions can slow or prevent delivery. [c002, c004]
Know what emergency satellite contact shares
For Apple Emergency SOS via satellite, messages are encrypted for transmission and then decrypted by Apple so they can be transferred to an emergency dispatcher or relay center. Apple says the user’s location is shared with Apple and relay providers to route the request and help responders reach the person. This is not the same encryption claim Apple makes for iMessage. [c002]
For either platform, follow the emergency questionnaire and on-screen directions carefully; they guide what information is sent and how the request is routed.
