To enable automatic PS5 system updates, turn on both automatic download and automatic installation in Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. You can check for an update manually in the same menu, but finding out whether it adds a graphics feature means checking Sony’s release notes: an update does not necessarily add one.
Turn on automatic PS5 system updates
- On your PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Turn on Download Update Files Automatically.
- Turn on Install Update Files Automatically.
- If you want the console to update while it is idle, put it in Rest Mode and enable the option to stay connected to the internet during Rest Mode. Sony says automatic system software updates run in Rest Mode when these conditions are met. See Sony’s PS5 system software update instructions.
Check for an update or confirm the installed version
Check manually for a system update
Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. If a newer version is available, Sony says “Update Available” appears. Choose Update System Software to install it. Sony’s update support page has the official steps.

See which version is installed
Go to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Sony indicates that Up to date appears there when the latest version is installed. This is a version-status check; it is separate from manually initiating an update.

Check the feature notes linked from Sony’s current PS5 system software update page. The page directs users to the features available in an update, but version numbers and release notes can change. No specific current stable version or newly added graphics feature is established here, so confirm the live notes rather than assuming a system update changes graphics.

Sony’s feature information covers 1440p HDMI video output, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). These are not universal enhancements that every display or game will use:
- 1440p output: requires a TV or PC monitor that supports 1440p at 60 Hz, or at both 60 Hz and 120 Hz.
- VRR: requires a compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR TV or monitor, and a game that supports VRR. Sony cautions that results vary by display and game.
- ALLM: requires a compatible HDMI 2.1 TV. The setting may be called Game Mode in the TV’s menus.
These compatibility details are on Sony’s PS5 feature information. When checking a display, match the feature you want, then verify its resolution, refresh rate, and HDMI support. Buying or changing a display does not enable system updates, and support for a feature does not mean every PS5 game uses it.

If the internet update fails
Sony documents a computer-and-USB method as a fallback, not a requirement for ordinary automatic updates. Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, create a PS5/UPDATE folder, and save Sony’s official update file in it as PS5UPDATE.PUP. Follow Sony’s USB update instructions exactly; do not use update files from another source. Sony’s guidance also includes retry and USB troubleshooting steps for failed downloads.
Do not turn off the console during installation: Sony warns that interrupting it can damage the console. Reinstalling system software is a separate recovery procedure that deletes console data, not a routine fix to try before the documented update steps. See Sony’s update and recovery guidance.

Stable updates and beta software are different
Sony’s beta program can provide early access to features, but it is separate from the ordinary stable update route. Beta installation is limited to eligible, approved adult accounts and uses a separate menu option. Eligibility and availability may change; back up your data before using beta software, as Sony advises. Check Sony’s system software support page for current instructions.
