To turn a laptop’s built-in touchpad on or off in Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad and use the Touchpad switch. If the switch is missing or the pad still does not respond, check for a driver update before assuming the hardware has failed.

Turn the built-in touchpad on or off

  1. Select Start, then open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices in the Settings sidebar.
  3. Select Touchpad.
  4. Turn the Touchpad switch on to enable the laptop’s built-in touchpad, or off to disable it.

The available controls can vary with the device and its touchpad driver. If your Settings page does not show the switch, use the troubleshooting steps below.

Enable the separate virtual touchpad

Windows’ virtual touchpad is an on-screen control for moving the mouse pointer; it is separate from the laptop’s built-in touchpad. To show it, right-click the taskbar, choose Taskbar settings, and turn on Virtual Touchpad under system-tray icons. Then select the virtual-touchpad icon beside the clock. To hide it, close its panel if open and switch Virtual Touchpad off in Taskbar settings. Microsoft’s virtual touchpad instructions describe this as an on-screen touchpad for controlling the pointer.

If the touchpad setting is missing or the pad does not work

Microsoft notes that a touchpad may stop working because its driver is missing or out of date. Try these Windows tools in order:

  1. Check Windows Update. Open Settings > Windows Update and check for available updates, including driver updates.
  2. Check Device Manager. Open Start, search for Device Manager, and look under Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices for the touchpad.
  3. Update or reinstall the touchpad device. In Device Manager, use the device’s available driver options. Microsoft says reinstalling the device can prompt Windows Update to download the latest driver.
  4. Contact the laptop manufacturer if updating or reinstalling the driver does not resolve the issue.

For detailed driver troubleshooting, follow Microsoft’s touchpad troubleshooting guidance.

Adjust touchpad gestures

When the touchpad is working, its Settings page can also offer controls for gestures. Depending on the device, these include tapping to select, two-finger scrolling, pinch-to-zoom, two-finger tap or pressing the lower-right corner for a right-click, and three- or four-finger swipes for window and desktop actions. Some advanced gestures require a precision touchpad, so their absence does not necessarily mean the touchpad is disabled. See Microsoft’s Windows touchpad and gesture guidance.
