To enable or disable JPEG XL in Chrome, open chrome://flags, search for Enable JXL image format (or enable-jxl-image-format), choose Enabled or Disabled if the control is available, then select Relaunch. The flag may not appear in every Chrome build, so check your installation rather than assuming you need to turn it on.
Change the JPEG XL flag in Chrome
- In Chrome’s address bar, enter
chrome://flagsand press Enter. - Use the search box on the flags page to look for Enable JXL image format or
enable-jxl-image-format. - If the flag appears, open its menu and choose Enabled to enable JPEG XL decoding, or Disabled to turn it off.
- Select Relaunch to restart Chrome and apply the change.
The control only applies when your installed build exposes it. If you cannot find it, that does not mean you made a mistake; flags can change or disappear as Chrome evolves.

What to expect from current Chrome support
Chrome’s official material describes JPEG XL decoding in Blink using jxl-rs, a memory-safe decoder written in Rust. Chrome 145 release notes say the decoder is gated by the enable-jxl-image-format flag and the enable_jxl_decoder build flag. They also list JPEG XL capabilities including progressive decoding, wide color gamut, HDR, high bit depth, and animation. These are format capabilities, not a promise that every JXL image or website will show a visible improvement.

On August 24, 2026, Chromium’s intent-to-ship entry named the flag and described a plan to roll out JPEG XL enabled for all users. It listed Windows, Mac, Linux, ChromeOS, Android, and Android WebView as supported Blink platforms. Chrome Platform Status’s Chrome 155 release notes also list JPEG XL decoding support. Those announcements do not confirm the default or flag visibility on every device, channel, or managed installation; the local flags page is the practical check.

If the flag is missing or JXL images still do not open
- Check the Chrome version and platform from
chrome://settings/helpif you are diagnosing why your installation differs from a guide. - Return to
chrome://flagsand search using the internal nameenable-jxl-image-formatas well as the displayed label. - If no matching control appears, your build may not expose it. The official sources do not establish a universal flag state across all Chrome versions and devices.
- If the flag is available and enabled but a particular image still fails, the cited Chrome documentation does not establish that every JXL file or website will work in every circumstance; test the specific page or file separately.
The reviewed official instructions do not establish that an extension, codec package, command-line switch, or conversion workflow is required to toggle Chrome’s built-in decoder.
Reset the flag if Chrome has problems
Google warns that Chrome flags are temporary and may change, break, or be removed without notice. Changing them can also affect data, security, or privacy, and most users should not need to modify flags. If Chrome behaves badly after experimenting with the JXL setting, open chrome://flags, choose Reset all, then select Relaunch. Google advises enterprise IT administrators not to use flags in production.

Why older guides say Chrome removed JPEG XL
Older instructions reflect a real earlier decision: in November 2022, Chromium said it would stop its then-current JPEG XL experiment and remove the associated code. Later Chrome release notes describe a different decoder implementation using jxl-rs. The earlier experiment’s removal does not describe the later support documented in Chrome 145 and Chrome 155 notes.
