To turn a Windows feature on or off, first identify which feature it is and where Windows manages it: search Start for Turn Windows features on or off for classic components, or check Settings > System > Optional features for optional components. Change only the control you need, follow any prerequisites or restart prompts, and prepare a way to recover before changes that could affect security, startup, or access to encrypted files.
Find the right control for the feature
Windows uses several control surfaces rather than one master feature switch. The control you need depends on the feature, Windows version and edition, device hardware, and—in managed computers—organizational policy.

- Classic Windows components: Open Start, search for Turn Windows features on or off, and open the matching Control Panel result. Select or clear the checkbox for the component, then choose OK.
- Optional features in Settings: Open Settings > System > Optional features. Use the available add or remove controls for the feature you want to manage.
- Feature-specific controls: Some capabilities have their own settings page. For example, privacy-related behavior may be controlled in the feature’s settings rather than through a general optional-features list.
- Firmware prerequisites: Some Windows features need a hardware setting enabled in UEFI/BIOS. Treat that as a separate prerequisite, not as permission to change unrelated firmware options.
If a feature or control is missing, check whether your Windows version and edition support it, whether the device has the required hardware, and whether a work or school administrator manages the PC. Microsoft notes that organizational policy can make some options unavailable: Manage optional features in Windows.

- Identify the goal and current state. Confirm the feature’s exact name and what you expect it to do. Note whether it is already enabled before changing anything.
- Check availability and prerequisites. Confirm that your Windows edition and device support the feature. Look up any required hardware, restart, or administrator access before applying the change.
- Prepare for recovery if the impact could be significant. Back up important files. For changes involving encryption or recovery environments, locate the BitLocker recovery key first. Where available, create a restore point or recovery drive before proceeding.
- Change only the named feature. In Windows Features, select or clear the relevant checkbox and choose OK. In Settings, use the feature’s own add or remove control. Avoid applying a batch of unexplained “debloat” changes.
- Restart if Windows requests it, then verify the result. Check that the intended capability works and that startup and other important functions remain normal.
Example: enable Virtual Machine Platform
Microsoft’s documented Windows procedure is to open Turn Windows features on or off, select Virtual Machine Platform, choose OK, and restart if prompted. Depending on the computer, hardware virtualization may also need to be enabled in UEFI/BIOS; instructions vary by manufacturer. If firmware configuration is required, use the device maker’s guidance and change only the necessary option. Microsoft warns: “Only change what you need to in the UEFI (or BIOS). Adjusting other settings might prevent you from accessing Windows.” See Enable virtualization on Windows.

Take extra care with security and privacy features
Security-related switches protect different parts of the system; they are not interchangeable performance settings. Decide based on a specific compatibility or operational need, rather than disabling protections as a routine speed tweak.
- Memory Integrity: This Windows Security feature is part of device security protections. Review its status and any compatibility information in Device security in Windows Security before changing it.
- Secure Boot: Secure Boot helps prevent malicious software from loading during startup. Changing its state can affect startup protections; consult Secure Boot overview and device-specific guidance.
- Device Encryption and BitLocker: These protect data on the drive. Keep the recovery key accessible before entering recovery or making a change that could trigger a recovery prompt. Microsoft explains recovery-key access at Find your BitLocker recovery key.
- Recall: On supported devices, Microsoft says Recall can be removed using Turn Windows features on or off. Removing it deletes previously saved snapshots. See Retrace your steps with Recall.
Availability and behavior vary by Windows edition and device. For example, Microsoft’s Windows Media Player guidance notes that legacy media features may be offered only in certain editions: Windows Media Player Legacy.

Prepare a rollback before higher-impact changes
A restore point can help reverse some system changes, but it is not a file backup and should not be assumed to exist. To create one where System Protection is available, search Start for Create a restore point, open the result, select the System Protection tab, configure protection if needed, and choose Create. Microsoft’s guide explains the settings: System Protection and restore point settings.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, installed programs, and settings without affecting personal files. It may reverse recently installed apps, drivers, updates, or settings. Its availability depends on System Protection configuration, disk space, and system behavior. See Use System Restore.

Microsoft also recommends backing up important files and creating a recovery drive on a USB drive while the PC is working; a recovery drive is a last-resort option, not a requirement for ordinary feature changes. Some recovery methods can cause data loss, and encrypted devices may require the BitLocker recovery key to use Windows Recovery Environment tools. Review Recovery options in Windows before you need them.
If Windows behaves differently after the change
- The feature did not appear: Check whether installation or a restart is still pending, then confirm Windows version, edition, device support, and policy restrictions.
- A feature depends on hardware: Follow the PC manufacturer’s instructions for the specific prerequisite. Avoid changing unrelated UEFI/BIOS settings.
- The PC has a problem after the change: Start with the least disruptive applicable troubleshooting or repair option. Use System Restore only if a suitable restore point exists, and follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance for more serious problems.
- A recovery screen asks for a key: For an encrypted device, retrieve the BitLocker recovery key before continuing. Do not assume a restore point or recovery route will bypass encryption.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided for Windows 10. Feature controls may still be present, but changing them does not restore security support. See Windows 10 support ends on October 14, 2025.
