If you want your desktop to stay clean, reduce visual distractions, or follow a policy-managed environment, you can turn the background off in a couple of reliable ways.
This guide walks you through the supported methods in Settings first, then covers Pro-only Group Policy and an advanced Registry approach for cases where you need enforcement or a deeper reset.

What desktop background means in Windows 11
When you “enable desktop background,” Windows 11 displays either an image wallpaper, a Slideshow of images, or (depending on your selection) a solid color. When you “disable” it, the practical effect is that you replace the wallpaper with a flat color so nothing changes visually behind your icons and widgets.

There isn’t a single universal “hide wallpaper” toggle in Settings. Instead, Windows expects you to choose a background type.
Prerequisites and what to expect
- You’ll need an active user session on the PC (Settings changes are per-user).
- Group Policy options require Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education. Home edition usually won’t have GPEDIT.
- Registry changes are advanced. If your organization manages the device, policies may overwrite your settings.
If your device is work-managed, you may notice the wallpaper keeps resetting—policy enforcement can override changes you make in Settings.
Enable or disable the desktop background using Settings
This is the fastest and most reliable method for most users. You’ll use Personalization to either pick a picture (enable) or switch to a solid color (disable).
Recommended Free Tools
Turn the background on (choose an image)
- Right-click the desktop and select Personalize.
- Open Background.
- In the Personalize your background dropdown, choose Picture.
- Pick a recent image, or select Browse photos to choose one from your PC.
If you want the wallpaper to adjust to the screen, open Choose a fit and try common options like Fill or Fit depending on your preference.
Turn the background off (use a solid color)
- Right-click the desktop and select Personalize.
- Go to Background.
- In Personalize your background, select Solid color.
- Choose the color you want from the palette, or use Custom color if available.
This effectively “disables” the desktop background imagery. Your icons and widgets will sit on a constant color instead of a wallpaper image.
Control Slideshow mode
Slideshow is still “background,” but it changes automatically. If you previously enabled Slideshow and now want it to stop, turn it off by switching to Picture or Solid color.
- Right-click the desktop > Personalize.
- Open Background.
- Choose Slideshow or replace it with Picture/Solid color.
- If you keep Slideshow, configure options such as Choose albums for your slideshow, Change picture every, and whether it includes images from OneDrive folders (when offered).
If your goal is a static look, avoid Slideshow and use Picture (static image) or Solid color (no image changes).
Use a local Group Policy setting (Pro editions)
If you’re on Windows 11 Pro/Enterprise/Education and want enforcement (for example, preventing users from changing wallpaper), you can use Group Policy. This is also useful when Settings changes appear to “snap back.”
Enable desktop background enforcement
- Press Win + R, type
gpedit.msc, and press Enter. - Navigate to: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization.
- Find the policy named Prevent changing desktop background.
- Set it to Enabled.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Reboot the PC, or run
gpupdate /forcein an elevated Command Prompt.
With this policy enabled, users can’t freely modify the desktop background via Personalization.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Disable desktop background enforcement
- Open
gpedit.msc. - Go to the same location: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization.
- Double-click Prevent changing desktop background.
- Set it to Not Configured (or Disabled).
- Apply changes, then run
gpupdate /forceor reboot.
After removing enforcement, Settings changes should take effect normally.
Use Registry Editor (advanced)
If Group Policy isn’t available or you need to troubleshoot policy-driven behavior, you can inspect or adjust wallpaper-related settings via Registry. This method is best reserved for advanced users and managed environments.
Before you edit: Back up the Registry (File > Export in Registry Editor) so you can roll back quickly.
Set the desktop wallpaper policy
- Press Win + R, type
regedit, and press Enter. - Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization. - If the Personalization key doesn’t exist, you may need to create it (right-click Policies > New > Key).
- Look for a DWORD value named NoChangingWallPaper.
- To enforce, set NoChangingWallPaper to
1. - If the value doesn’t exist, create it: right-click the right pane > New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, name it NoChangingWallPaper, then set it to
1. - Restart the PC or run
gpupdate /force(if policies are involved).
This doesn’t directly “turn off” the wallpaper; it controls whether users can change it. In many managed setups, policy prevents switching to a solid color.
Revert to default behavior
- Open Registry Editor and return to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization. - If NoChangingWallPaper exists, set it to
0or delete it. - Restart the PC and re-check Settings > Personalization > Background.
If a domain policy pushes the setting back, your changes may be overwritten on the next policy refresh.
Troubleshooting: wallpaper won’t change or reverts
If you switch to Solid color or Picture but the desktop background doesn’t stick, the issue usually comes down to caching, Explorer not updating, system file problems, or policy enforcement.

- Go to Settings > Personalization > Background.
- Confirm the dropdown is truly set to Solid color or Picture.
- Wait 10–20 seconds and verify the desktop updates. Sometimes it’s delayed if Explorer is stuck.
If it keeps reverting, it strongly suggests policy or a syncing/management tool is overwriting your choice.
Restart Windows Explorer
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find Windows Explorer.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Check the desktop background again.
This often fixes a “background doesn’t repaint” situation without rebooting the entire PC.
Verify theme and personalization sync
Windows themes can indirectly affect personalization. If you used a third-party theme or a theme pack, it may override background choices.

- Forgetting Slideshow: If you leave Slideshow enabled, you won’t get a “disabled” static look.
- Assuming Settings can override policy: If Prevent changing desktop background is enforced, changes you make in Settings won’t persist.
- Not restarting Explorer: Some machines briefly lag in applying the new background type. Restarting Windows Explorer is faster than rebooting.
- Editing the wrong user hive: Registry settings under
HKEY_CURRENT_USERapply to the current user only.
FAQs
Can I truly remove the wallpaper on Windows 11?
Windows 11 doesn’t offer a “no background” state. The closest equivalent is setting Background to Solid color, so there’s no image.
Why does my background keep changing back after I set it?
Common causes include Group Policy enforcement, third-party theme tools, or a Slideshow configuration that’s still active. Check Settings > Personalization > Background for Slideshow and verify whether the policy Prevent changing desktop background is enabled.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Does disabling the desktop background affect performance?
It can slightly reduce background rendering and slideshow activity. The main performance gains, if any, usually come from disabling Slideshow and avoiding frequent image transitions rather than turning off a static wallpaper.
Will this work the same on Windows 11 Home?
Yes for the Settings method. Group Policy and some enforcement-style approaches require Pro/Enterprise/Education.
What if I change it, but it only updates on one monitor?
Multi-monitor setups apply different wallpaper behaviors depending on your fit/position settings. Re-check the Choose a fit option after selecting your wallpaper mode.
Bottom Line
To enable desktop background, go to Settings > Personalization > Background and choose Picture. To disable it, switch to Solid color for a constant, no-wallpaper look.
