What Copy and Paste Means in Edge Application Guard
In Application Guard, the browser runs in a hardened, sandboxed environment. Clipboard redirection is the mechanism that decides whether clipboard content can flow between your normal Windows session and the Application Guard container.

- Copy outside and paste into Application Guard.
When it’s disabled, clipboard content won’t cross the boundary reliably, so Copy/Paste is blocked or limited to within the isolated context.
Prerequisites and Compatibility Checks
Before changing policy, confirm your environment supports Application Guard and policy-based clipboard control.
Minimum requirements
- Windows: Windows 10/11 Enterprise or Education (commonly used), or a supported Windows Server configuration depending on your org’s setup.
- Windows Defender Application Guard enabled (WDAG / Application Guard for Edge).
- Edge: A modern Microsoft Edge version with Application Guard policy support. (Practically, update Edge to the latest stable build before troubleshooting.)
- Admin access: Group Policy Editor or permission to write machine-level policy in the Registry.
Confirm Application Guard is actually in use
On an affected machine, open Edge and confirm Application Guard is available/used. If Application Guard isn’t active, clipboard policy won’t show obvious effects.
- Try opening a site known to trigger Application Guard in your configuration.
- Use the Application Guard window/container indicator shown by Edge/Windows in your environment.
How to Enable or Disable Copy and Paste (Clipboard Redirection)
There are two common enterprise approaches: Group Policy (best for domain-managed environments) or direct Registry policy (useful for standalone devices or scripted deployment). Both target the same policy setting.

Method 1: Use Microsoft Edge Group Policy (Recommended)
Use Group Policy if you manage endpoints with Active Directory or you want consistent enterprise governance.
- On a management PC, download and install the latest Microsoft Edge Policy templates (msedge policy templates) if you haven’t already.
- Open Group Policy Management Editor (Win + R →
gpedit.mscfor local, or use gpmc.msc for domain). - Navigate to: Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Microsoft Edge.
- Find the policy named ApplicationGuardClipboardRedirectionEnabled (the name may appear under an Application Guard/Isolation-related subsection depending on template version).
- Set it to one of the following values:
- Enabled to allow Copy and Paste (clipboard redirection on).
- Disabled to prevent Copy and Paste (clipboard redirection off).
- Close the editor.
- On affected endpoints, run gpupdate /force in an elevated Command Prompt.
- Restart Edge (and if policy still doesn’t reflect, restart Windows) before you test behavior.
Method 2: Use Windows Registry Policy Key
If you can’t use Group Policy templates directly, you can set the same policy via Registry. This is also a common approach for Intune custom settings or scripted rollout.
- Open Registry Editor (Win + R →
regedit). - Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge - Find the DWORD (32-bit) value named ApplicationGuardClipboardRedirectionEnabled.
- If the value doesn’t exist, create it:
- Right-click the
Edgekey → New → DWORD (32-bit) Value. - Name it
ApplicationGuardClipboardRedirectionEnabled.
- Right-click the
- Set the value data:
- 1 = enabled (allow Copy/Paste via clipboard redirection)
- 0 = disabled (block Copy/Paste via clipboard redirection)
- Close Registry Editor.
- Restart Edge and test. If it still doesn’t apply, restart the machine.
Verify the Setting Took Effect
After applying policy, don’t guess—verify. Edge includes a policy inspection page that helps confirm whether the device received your intended setting.
Check effective policy in Edge
- Open Edge.
- In the address bar, go to:
edge://policy - Search for:
ApplicationGuardClipboardRedirectionEnabled - Confirm it shows as configured and note whether the effective value is enabled (1) or disabled (0).
Test Copy and Paste behavior the right way
Use a controlled test that minimizes false positives.

- Copy text inside Application Guard, paste outside, and confirm behavior.
- Test both plain text and (if your org supports it) images—clipboard policies can behave differently by content type.
Troubleshooting When Copy/Paste Still Works (or Never Works)
When policy changes don’t reflect immediately, it’s usually due to template mismatch, policy not applying, or the browser not recognizing the updated settings.
1) Confirm the policy is really applied
- Re-check
edge://policyforApplicationGuardClipboardRedirectionEnabled. - If it’s not present, run gpupdate /force (or ensure your Registry policy key exists under
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge).
2) Make sure you’re testing in an Application Guard session
If you’re testing a normal Edge tab, clipboard redirection policies for Application Guard won’t matter. Try a URL pattern your environment is configured to launch into Application Guard.
3) Restart sequence that actually works
- Close all Edge windows.
- Reopen Edge and test again.
- If behavior still doesn’t match, restart Windows once. Some isolation/container-related settings apply after a full restart.
4) Watch for conflicting policies
In managed environments, other Edge or Windows isolation policies can override behavior expectations. Check for related Application Guard settings in your policy baseline.

Common Mistakes and Edge Cases
- Editing the wrong Registry hive: Policies must be under
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edgefor machine-wide management. EditingHKCUoften won’t affect Application Guard behavior the way you expect. - Using the wrong data type:
ApplicationGuardClipboardRedirectionEnabledshould be a DWORD with values0or1. - Testing outside the isolation boundary: Ensure you’re in an Application Guard context before concluding the setting is broken.
- Not updating Edge policy templates: If the policy setting name doesn’t appear in Group Policy, you may have an outdated template package.
- Assuming it affects all content types equally: Some environments treat rich clipboard content (images/formatting) differently than plain text.
Security and Usability Trade-offs
Disabling clipboard redirection can reduce the risk of sensitive data crossing the isolation boundary. In many security-conscious deployments, organizations disable Copy/Paste to limit accidental leakage.
However, blocking Copy/Paste can frustrate workflows like transferring log snippets, account IDs, or error messages out of Application Guard. If you need usability, enabling clipboard redirection (policy value 1) may be the better balance—combined with other hardening controls your organization already uses.
Alternatives if You Need More Control
If you can’t get the clipboard behavior you want, consider operational alternatives that avoid relying on copy/paste from the container.
- Report-only workflows: Encourage users to manually type minimal identifiers outside the isolated session instead of moving full content.
- Use enterprise secure endpoints: For high-trust tasks, guide users to safe zones that don’t require Application Guard isolation.
- Content review gates: If the goal is preventing sensitive leakage, pair clipboard restrictions with monitoring and DLP controls where applicable.
FAQs
Does this setting apply to both directions (inside-to-outside and outside-to-inside)?
When clipboard redirection is enabled, users typically can move content both ways. When disabled, paste/copy behavior should be blocked across the boundary, but exact symptoms can vary by content type and your environment’s isolation behavior.

Why does edge://policy show the setting but users still see Copy/Paste?
Most often, the test isn’t actually running in an Application Guard session, or Edge hasn’t fully reloaded updated policy. Confirm the session type, then restart Edge (and if needed, restart Windows) before retesting.
Can I enable this for only some users?
This policy is generally machine-level for Edge. If you need per-user differences, you’ll usually have to use user-scoped policy where supported by your template, or manage separate device groups with different policy assignments.
Will turning it off break form filling or downloads inside Application Guard?
Disabling clipboard redirection targets copy/paste behavior. It shouldn’t directly disable downloading or form submission, but any workflow that relies on pasting data into forms from outside the container will change.
