The switch is in Settings > Accessibility > Narrator > Math reading. Under Math navigation, turn Auto zoom out on or off. A Windows 11 community tutorial on ElevenForum reports that it is on by default. I found no official Microsoft page that documents this exact control, so confirm that it appears on your build before you rely on these steps.
Steps to turn Auto zoom out on or off
- Press Windows+I to open Settings.
- Select Accessibility, then Narrator.
- In the Math section, select Math reading.
- Under Math navigation, switch Auto zoom out on or off.
- Close Settings. The change is a toggle in Settings, so you should not need to restart Narrator or Windows. I did not test whether a restart is ever needed.
The route and the default state come from the community tutorial. They have not been checked against a Microsoft release note.

What Auto zoom out does
Narrator’s math navigation lets you move into a nested part of an expression, such as the numerator of a fraction or the contents of a root. The tutorial says Auto zoom out returns you to the preceding or following expression once Narrator finishes reading that nested part.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHere “zoom” means the level of the expression you are navigating. It is not screen magnification. Windows Magnifier has its own zoom controls and can follow the Narrator cursor, but that is a separate feature with separate settings.
#1 Best Overall
- KEYBOARD: The keyboard works for Windows with hot keys that enable easy access to Media, My Computer, Mute, Volume up/down, and Calculator
- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.
- SLEEK DESIGN: The elegant black color of the wired keyboard complements your tech and decor, adding a stylish and cohesive look to any setup without sacrificing function.
- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
Should you leave it on or turn it off?
- Leave it on if you want to be taken back to the surrounding expression after you inspect a nested part. This is the reported default.
- Turn it off if you prefer to stay inside the nested expression and move around there until you choose to leave.
This guidance is my reading of the reported setting description. It is not the result of hands-on testing, so try both states on an expression you know well.
If you can’t find Math reading
The tutorial ties Narrator math reading and navigation to experimental Windows 11 26H2 Insider builds, starting with build 26340.9354. It also reports later expansion of language and browser support. For web content it names Edge Stable 153.0.4234.32 and Chrome Stable 153.0.8010.18. Those version numbers come from the community guide, not an official Microsoft note.

- Run Windows Update and look at the options on the Narrator page.
- If you read math on the web, check that your browser is at or beyond the versions the guide names.
The guide also describes a registry method. Microsoft does not document it as a supported way to change this setting, so this article does not recommend it.
Don’t confuse it with Magnifier
If you want the screen itself larger or smaller, use Magnifier. Microsoft documents its zoom shortcuts and settings separately from Narrator, and Narrator’s keyboard commands and touch gestures are documented on their own pages. Auto zoom out affects only how Narrator moves through math structure.
