If NVIDIA Control Panel says SLI is disabled, that alone does not mean either graphics card is faulty. “Disable SLI” runs the GPUs independently. On a compatible system, you can select Maximize 3D performance in NVIDIA Control Panel, apply the setting, and check whether SLI rendering is active. This guide is about NVIDIA Scalable Link Interface (SLI); it does not apply to other uses of the acronym.
Check compatibility before changing settings
SLI requires a supported combination of hardware and software; having two graphics cards is not enough. NVIDIA’s Linux driver documentation for version 455.45.01 lists identical PCI Express cards, a supported motherboard, and, in most cases, a video bridge. That is a platform- and driver-specific reference, not a complete compatibility list for every Windows system or current GPU generation. See NVIDIA’s Linux SLI documentation, then check support for your exact cards and motherboard.

- Confirm the operating system detects both cards and identify their exact model names.
- Check whether the motherboard and PCIe configuration support the specific GPU pair. NVIDIA’s Linux documentation lists possible initialization problems such as mismatched GPUs, unsupported bus type or PCI topology, insufficient PCIe link width, an unsupported GPU video BIOS, or an undetected video link. These are Linux-specific examples, not a full Windows troubleshooting checklist.
- Verify whether the setup requires a bridge. Connector type and spacing depend on the cards and board; a bridge is not a universal fix. Confirm the exact requirements before buying one.
NVIDIA lists GeForce GTX SLI Bridge and NVLink/SLI HB Bridge categories on its bridge support page. That listing does not establish compatibility for a particular system, so match the bridge to the GPU models and platform.

- Open NVIDIA Control Panel and go to 3D Settings, then the SLI configuration page. In older GeForce documentation, the page is labeled Configure SLI, Surround, PhysX; labels can vary by driver and hardware.
- Select Maximize 3D performance.
- Click Apply.
NVIDIA describes this setting as allowing the driver to make the GPUs work together “when possible” to increase 3D rendering performance. The setting is conditional, not a guarantee that every application will use both cards. Verify whether SLI rendering is active
In NVIDIA Control Panel, open the 3D Settings menu and enable Show SLI Visual Indicator. NVIDIA documents a vertical green bar labeled “SLI” for AFR rendering, as well as indicators for SLI antialiasing and a green square on the focus display. Its guidance says that no indicator means the system is not in SLI mode. This checks the rendering mode; it does not measure performance or show that a particular game benefits. Check the game or application separately
An enabled SLI configuration does not guarantee that a specific game or application will use both GPUs or run faster. NVIDIA notes that SLI can be disabled to address software compatibility issues, and its performance option applies “when possible.” Treat the Control Panel selection and the application’s actual behavior as separate questions.

NVIDIA has published an SLI profile update page dated 2011. It provides historical context, not evidence that a profile is currently available or effective for a particular title. Do not assume that changing a global setting will resolve a game-specific compatibility problem.

First compare your exact GPU pair, motherboard, operating system, and driver against the support information for that platform. If the control is absent or applying the setting does not produce an active-mode indicator, gather these details before seeking a model-specific diagnosis:

- Both graphics card model names
- Motherboard model
- Operating system and NVIDIA driver version
- A screenshot of the relevant Control Panel page and its available options
- The exact game or application you want to run
Without those details, it is not possible to determine whether the cause is an unsupported combination, a hardware connection, a driver limitation, or application behavior. Avoid treating a driver reinstall, registry change, third-party utility, or new bridge as a universal remedy; none is established as a general fix for every disabled-SLI case.
