To enable microphone automatic gain control (AGC), turn it on in the app, audio effect, microphone, or conferencing processor that handles the input you actually record. There is no single menu path that applies to every device: the control may have a different name, or may not be supported at all.
What microphone AGC does
Automatic gain control adjusts microphone input by boosting or lowering it toward a target level, making captured output more consistent. Android’s API describes AGC as useful when a constant capture level matters more than preserving the input’s full dynamic range. In practice, AGC can help when speakers sit at different distances or several people share a conference room, though its behavior depends on the implementation.

AGC is not necessarily a control on the microphone itself. Processing may happen in an app, operating-system audio effect, SDK, microphone or recorder, driver, or external conferencing DSP. For that reason, a missing checkbox in Windows or macOS does not by itself show that the microphone is faulty.
Find where AGC is controlled
- Identify the active input. Note the microphone, operating system, app, and—if used—audio interface or conferencing processor. In the app where you record or call, confirm which input device is selected.
- Open that input’s audio or processing controls. Look for labels such as “AGC,” “automatic gain control,” “auto gain,” or “automatic level.” A manufacturer may use a product-specific name instead; for example, RØDE’s Interview PRO documentation calls its feature “Gain Assist.” Names that sound similar may not represent identical processing.
- Enable the control for the input or channel in use. Apply or save the setting. If the interface offers a bypass option, make sure bypass is off; on Yealink’s documented conferencing block, enabling Bypass disables AGC.
- Record or monitor a short sample. Use your usual speaking distance and volume. Check whether the level responds as expected, and listen for pumping, background noise becoming more noticeable during pauses, or clipping. These are checks to perform, not guaranteed AGC effects.
- If you cannot find a control, check the exact model’s documentation. Look in its current manual, companion app, driver, or firmware notes. AGC may be provided by a different part of the audio chain rather than by the operating system’s microphone settings.
Where to enable AGC in common setups
Android apps
Android exposes AGC through android.media.audiofx.AutomaticGainControl, which an app attaches to an AudioRecord capture session. The app can check whether the effect is available and enable or disable it. A null result when creating the effect means that the device does not implement it. Android also notes that some devices may insert AGC by default depending on the audio source, so an app should check the effect’s current state rather than assume it is off.
#1 Best Overall
- [Natural Audio Clarity] Operated with frequency response of 50Hz-16KHz, the podcasting XLR mic delivers balanced audio range, likely to resonate with your audience. Directional cardioid dynamic microphone corded will not exaggerate your voice, while rejects unwanted off-axis noise for vocal originality and intelligibility during your PS5 gaming streaming video recording. (Tips: Keep the top of end-addressing XLR dynamic microphone AM8 facing audio source, and suggested recording range is 2 to 6 in.)
- [XLR Connection Upgrade-Ability] To use XLR connection, connect the podcast microphone to an audio interface (or mixer) using a separate XLR cable (NOT Included) . Well-connected and smooth operation improves audio flexibility to make you explore various types of music recording singing. The streaming mic isolates the pristine and accurate sound from ambient noise with greater no interference and fidelity. (RGB and function key on mic are INACTIVE when using XLR connection.)
- [USB Connection with Handy Mute] Skip the hassle of setting something up and plug the cable to play the dynamic USB microphone directly, which suits for beginner creators or daily podcast. You can quickly control the gamer mic with tap-to-mute that is independent of computer/Macbook programs to keep privacy when live streaming. LED mute reminder helps you get rid of forgetting to cancel the mute. (RGB and function key are only available for USB connection, but NOT for XLR connection)
- [Soothing Controllable RGB] RGB ring on the desktop gaming microphone for PC, with 3 modes and more than 10 light colors collection, matches your PC gears accessories for gaming synergy even in dim room. You can control the RGB key button of the dynamic microphone USB directly for game color scheme gaming or live streaming. Configured memory function, the streaming microphone RGB no need to repeated selections after turnning off and brings itself alive when power on. (Only available for USB connection)
- [More Function Keys] Computer microphone with headphones jack upgrades your rhythm game experience and gets feedback whether the real-time voice your audience hear as expected. Get the desired level via monitoring volume control when gaming recording. Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
This is an app/API route, not a universal Android settings switch. If you are an app user rather than a developer, check the recording app’s microphone or audio-processing settings; the app must expose the control for you to change it.
Conferencing DSPs
In Yealink Room Designer, AGC is configured on the relevant audio channel. Its documented block includes Bypass, Target Level, Maximum Gain, and Maximum Attenuation. Yealink recommends AGC for channels where talker distance may vary or multiple people use the room. Follow the ranges and instructions for the specific product and software version instead of copying settings from another processor.

- [Clear Output Voice] Cardioid condenser microphone for PC captures your voice properly, producing clear smooth and crisp sound. Great computer recording mic for gamers/streamers/youtubers focus on the main source and reduces background noise. The streaming microphone does the job well for broadcast ,OBS and teamspeak.
SDK-controlled capture
For developers using ZEGOCLOUD, the documentation describes enabling AGC through its enableAGC interface. Audio-processing options must be set before the relevant preview, publishing, or playback actions to take effect. Follow the lifecycle requirements for the SDK version in use, and verify that the option applies to the active capture path.

Some products expose automatic level control under a brand-specific label. RØDE’s Interview PRO documentation lists Gain Assist modes: Auto, Dynamic, and Off. It identifies Dynamic as AGC; Off uses fixed gain and permits manual channel-gain adjustment. Consult the documentation for your exact model before treating a named mode as equivalent to another manufacturer’s AGC setting.

How to check whether AGC is taking effect
- Confirm the setting belongs to the same input, channel, or capture session selected by your recording or conferencing app.
- Check that the control is enabled and, where applicable, that bypass is disabled.
- Record a short sample while speaking first at your normal distance, then a little farther away or more quietly. Listen for a change in level rather than relying only on the control’s on-screen state.
- Notice whether quieter speech becomes more audible without unwanted noise or clipping. If the result sounds worse, turn AGC off or adjust the product’s documented target and limits, if available.
A test recording can confirm whether a setting appears to work in your setup, but there is no universal ideal target level or setting established across these different implementations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why you may not see an AGC switch
- The control is elsewhere. An app, driver, SDK, microphone, or external DSP may handle gain instead of the operating system interface.
- The device or capture path does not support it. Android’s API explicitly allows an availability check; a device may not implement the effect.
- AGC is already applied. Some Android devices may insert it by default for particular audio sources.
- The feature uses another label or mode. Check the model’s manual for terms such as auto level or a vendor-specific gain-assist feature, while verifying what that mode actually does.
A Windows support question about enabling AGC for a condenser microphone illustrates the ambiguity: the wording alone does not establish a current, universal Windows menu path. Identify the exact microphone, app, and audio-processing route before following model-specific instructions.
