You can make iPhone turn on Low Power Mode automatically when the battery falls below a percentage you choose by creating a Battery Level automation in Shortcuts. On supported iPhones, Adaptive Power is a built-in alternative that can enable Low Power Mode at 20%.
Set a custom battery threshold with Shortcuts
Use a personal automation if you want Low Power Mode to switch on at a level other than Adaptive Power’s documented 20% threshold. Apple’s Shortcuts guide explains how to create and save one.

Open Shortcuts, tap Automation, then choose the option to create a new personal automation.

Select Battery Level as the trigger.

Choose Falls Below and set the battery percentage you want. The other available trigger choices are Equals and Rises Above; “Falls Below” is the event that matches a low-battery threshold. Apple documents these trigger options.

Add the Low Power Mode control action and configure it to turn Low Power Mode on.

Save the automation. In the editor, set it to run automatically; if prompted, also configure the action itself to run automatically. Apple notes that some personal automations and individual actions have automatic-run controls. See Apple’s automation settings guidance.

The Battery Level trigger is event-based: it responds when charge crosses the selected condition, rather than repeatedly checking the battery. Apple also offers a separate Low Power Mode setting trigger for when the mode is turned on or off; that trigger is not a battery threshold.
Use Adaptive Power instead
If your iPhone supports it and you are happy with its built-in behavior, enable Adaptive Power in Settings > Battery > Power Mode. Apple says Adaptive Power can turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20%. Apple’s Adaptive Power support page describes the eligible models and says the feature needs at least seven days to learn charging habits before it engages. Model support and settings can vary with iOS versions, so check Apple’s current compatibility list.

Adaptive Power also makes its own adjustments, which can include lowering brightness, limiting background activity, and adjusting performance. Choose Shortcuts when you need to set a different threshold or want to manage the automation yourself; choose Adaptive Power when its supported-device availability and 20% behavior suit you.
Check Low Power Mode or turn it on manually
The Settings location depends on the iPhone model: on iPhone 15 and later, go to Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode; on iPhone 14 and earlier, go to Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. These paths are documented in Apple’s iPhone User Guide.

Know what Low Power Mode changes
Low Power Mode conserves energy by changing or pausing some features. Apple lists reduced display brightness, a 30-second Auto-Lock default, some visual effects being turned off, iCloud Photos temporarily pausing, automatic downloads and email fetch being turned off, and Background App Refresh being turned off. On ProMotion models, the display refresh rate is limited to 60 frames per second; some tasks may also run more slowly. Apple’s guide to Low Power Mode describes these effects.
One behavior matters when choosing your automation threshold: Low Power Mode automatically turns off once iPhone charges to 80% or higher. If you want it enabled again after a charge, the Battery Level automation will need to be triggered again as the battery later falls below your chosen level.
