To use LDAC on Android, both your phone and your Bluetooth headphones or speaker must support the codec. Pair the receiver, select LDAC in Android’s Bluetooth codec controls if they are available, and check the headphone maker’s app for any required quality setting. A menu selection alone does not confirm that the active connection is using LDAC.
Before you enable LDAC
LDAC is a Bluetooth audio codec: Android’s encoder sends audio using it, and the headphones or speaker must be able to receive it. If the receiver does not support LDAC, a phone setting cannot add that capability. Check the specifications for both devices and connect the receiver before looking for codec controls. Android’s platform documentation describes LDAC support and codec behavior at AOSP audio implementation.

How to enable LDAC on Android
- Pair and connect a compatible receiver. Use headphones or a speaker whose specifications explicitly list LDAC support.
- Open Developer options. If the menu is not visible, open the phone’s About section and tap Build number seven times. The exact location and labels vary by manufacturer and Android release. Android documents the process at Configure on-device developer options.
- Choose an LDAC option. In Developer options, look for Bluetooth Audio Codec or Bluetooth Audio LDAC Codec. Select LDAC or the desired LDAC quality mode if offered. Depending on the Android build, choices can include prioritizing sound quality, balancing sound and connection, prioritizing connection quality, or adaptive bitrate.
- Check the headphone maker’s app if applicable. For supported Sony models, open Sony | Sound Connect, connect the headphones, and set Bluetooth Connection Quality to Prioritize Sound Quality. Sony says to verify that the codec shown below the model name is LDAC. These are Sony-specific controls, not universal Android menu labels. See Sony’s LDAC connection guidance.
Android’s available codec choices depend on the phone, software build, connected receiver, and settings; the Developer options screen can therefore differ between devices. Android describes the LDAC quality controls in its Developer options documentation.

How to confirm LDAC is active
Do not rely only on a selected value in Developer options: that control is not proof that the current Bluetooth connection negotiated LDAC. With compatible Sony headphones, Sound Connect provides a practical confirmation point by displaying the connected codec. Sony notes that codec selection can depend on the connected device, operating system, software version, and settings; see Sony’s codec selection guidance.

If you have another brand of headphones, check that manufacturer’s app or support instructions for an active-codec indicator. App features and labels are model-specific, so Sony’s instructions should not be treated as universal.
Fix missing, inactive, or reverting LDAC settings
LDAC is missing or unavailable
- Confirm that both phone and receiver support LDAC; a receiver without LDAC cannot use it.
- Connect the headphones or speaker before opening the codec menu.
- Check the manufacturer’s app and device documentation. Supported codecs and menu choices vary by model, operating system, software version, and settings.
The selection changes back or LDAC does not appear active
For supported Sony headphones, set Sound Connect’s Bluetooth Connection Quality to Prioritize Sound Quality. If LDAC still does not activate after changing the mode, Sony’s model-specific guidance recommends toggling Bluetooth on the playback device or power-cycling the headphones, then checking the codec display again. See Sony’s LDAC connection guidance.

Audio stutters or the connection cuts out
LDAC sends more data, and Sony recommends prioritizing a stable connection if interruptions occur. Change the receiver’s connection-quality setting toward stability, or select a connection-priority or adaptive option in Android if your device offers one. Moving the phone closer to the receiver and reducing physical obstructions or nearby radio interference are also reasonable troubleshooting steps, though results depend on the environment.

Does LDAC drain battery faster?
The cited manufacturer information does not establish a universal or quantified battery penalty for LDAC on phones or headphones. Sony says LDAC transmits more data in its discussion of connection interruptions, but that does not quantify battery use. Actual runtime depends on the specific headphones, their features and settings, and how they are used.

If you suspect LDAC affects your headphones’ runtime, compare use with LDAC enabled and disabled on the same equipment while keeping other settings and listening conditions as consistent as possible. Treat this as a personal comparison, not a published codec test.
For context, Sony lists the WF-1000XM5 at a maximum of 8 hours of continuous music playback with noise canceling on and a maximum of 12 hours with noise canceling off. Those are Sony product specifications accessed in 2026, not an LDAC-versus-other-codec comparison; the specifications list LDAC as supported but do not attribute either runtime figure to it. See Sony WF-1000XM5 specifications.
