Enable vBulletin’s built-in gzip output from Admin CP → Settings → Options → Cookies and HTTP Header Options (older releases may label this area vBulletin Options). Set GZIP HTML Output to Yes, choose a compression level, and save. Start with level 1, which the vBulletin manual lists as the recommended default.

Before switching it on, confirm that PHP has the ZLIB library and that your web server is not already applying mod_gzip or another gzip layer. Compressing the same response twice can produce a blank page or a content-encoding error.

What vBulletin gzip compression does
When enabled, vBulletin compresses the HTML it generates before sending it to a browser. The purpose is to reduce the number of bytes transferred between the server and a client, which can lower bandwidth use for forum pages. The vBulletin manual describes the feature as applying to clients that support gzip and HTTP/1.1; clients that do not advertise gzip support should receive the normal, uncompressed response.
Compression applies to generated HTML output. It is not a substitute for optimizing images, scripts, stylesheets, database queries, or a slow server. It also does not guarantee a particular percentage reduction: the documentation reviewed publishes no authoritative bandwidth or speed statistic. The measurable configuration facts are the available levels, from 0 through 9, and the manual’s recommended starting value.

Check these prerequisites before changing the setting
Confirm PHP ZLIB support
vBulletin requires PHP’s ZLIB library for its own gzip output. If ZLIB is missing or disabled, enabling the option can fail or produce unusable output. Ask your host to confirm that the PHP version used by the forum includes ZLIB, or check the PHP information available to your administrator account. Verify the PHP environment used by the web server, not merely a different command-line PHP installation.
Find out whether the server already compresses responses
Look at the web-server configuration or ask the hosting administrator whether mod_gzip, mod_deflate, or an equivalent response-compression layer is active for HTML. The vBulletin manual specifically warns against enabling its gzip option when mod_gzip is already in use. The same caution applies to any other layer that adds gzip encoding to the response.

Choose one compression owner
For a given HTML response, decide whether vBulletin or the web server will add gzip encoding. A server-level configuration can cover more applications and is often managed outside the forum, while the vBulletin setting is controlled in the Admin CP and follows vBulletin’s output. Running both for the same response is the configuration to avoid.
Set GZIP HTML Output in the Admin CP
- Sign in with an administrator account. You need access to the vBulletin Admin CP, not only the public forum or the moderator control panel.
- Open the option group. Go to Settings → Options → Cookies and HTTP Header Options. In older vBulletin interfaces, the parent area may be shown as vBulletin Options. A SiteGround knowledge-base article updated August 7, 2025, documents this same navigation path.
- Enable HTML gzip output. Find GZIP HTML Output and change it to Yes.
- Enter a compression level. Use a value from the documented 0–9 range. The manual recommends level 1 and identifies it as the default; use that value for a first deployment unless you have a specific reason to tune it.
- Save the options. Click the page’s save button. The manual states that the setting takes effect after saving.
- Verify the response. Load a representative forum page and inspect its response headers with browser developer tools or a response-header checker. A gzip-compressed response should show one
Content-Encoding: gzipheader. Test more than the home page when possible: open a thread, a forum listing, and a page that requires a logged-in session.
Perform the first check in a private browser window or while signed in as a normal user as well as an administrator. Different vBulletin pages can follow different output paths, and an administrator-only page is not a reliable representation of what visitors receive.

Which compression level should you use?
vBulletin documents a numeric range rather than separate named presets. The values describe the setting available in the Admin CP; they are not published performance measurements.

Higher numbers should not be treated as an automatic speed improvement. Compression can trade processor work for fewer transferred bytes, and the right balance depends on your server, PHP workload, page size, and traffic pattern. Because the vBulletin documentation supplies no benchmark for levels 2 through 9, do not promise a specific bandwidth saving when changing the value. If you tune it, change one value at a time and monitor page delivery and server load.
vBulletin compression versus web-server compression
Both approaches can produce a gzip-encoded HTML response, but they differ in ownership and failure recovery. The important decision is to use one layer for the same response, not both.

If your hosting provider already centrally manages compression, leaving vBulletin’s option off avoids competing settings. If you cannot change the server configuration but PHP ZLIB is available, the Admin CP method gives you a direct vBulletin-level control. Either choice should result in at most one gzip encoding layer on a response.

How to verify that gzip is working correctly
Inspect headers in a browser
- Open the forum in a current desktop browser.
- Open developer tools and select the Network panel.
- Reload a forum page so the document request appears.
- Select the document request and inspect the response headers.
- Look for
Content-Encoding: gzip. Confirm that it appears once, not as duplicated or contradictory encoding values.
The exact wording and location of the headers vary by browser, but the response header is the relevant evidence. A cached document, a proxy response, or a request that does not accept gzip can show different headers, so inspect a fresh document request and consider testing with a normal browser request that advertises gzip.
Check more than one page type
Test a forum index, a thread view, and a forum listing. If your site has separate public and authenticated areas, check one page from each. A successful header on one URL does not prove that every application endpoint uses the same output path.

Interpret the result carefully
- One gzip encoding header: the response is being encoded once, which is the expected result when gzip is active.
- No encoding header: the client may not have requested gzip, the page may have bypassed vBulletin output compression, ZLIB may be unavailable, or another configuration may be handling the response.
- Two encoding layers or a browser error: treat this as a likely duplicate-compression problem and disable one owner before testing again.
The header check is operational guidance for your installation; it is not a published benchmark or a test result from the documentation.

1. Turn the option off first
If a page becomes blank, downloads instead of displaying, or reports a content-encoding error immediately after enabling gzip, return to Settings → Options → Cookies and HTTP Header Options and set GZIP HTML Output to No. Save the change, then reload the affected page. This is the fastest rollback when the Admin CP remains accessible.

2. Remove the duplicate compression layer
If disabling vBulletin gzip restores the page, inspect the server configuration for mod_gzip or another compression mechanism. The documented failure case is vBulletin and the server both gzipping the response. Keep only one layer enabled, then retest the response headers.
3. Use the SQL fallback if the Admin CP is inaccessible
The vBulletin developer documentation records this SQL update for disabling the setting:
UPDATE setting SET value = '0' WHERE varname = 'gzipoutput';Run it against the vBulletin database using your normal database-administration procedure. Make a database backup or confirm your recovery process before issuing a direct update, and use the table name and database selected for the affected installation.
4. Use the config.php fallback
The developer manual also documents a configuration-level bypass. Add the following line immediately after the opening PHP tag in config.php:
DEFINE('NOZIP', 1);This prevents gzip output while you regain access and correct the underlying configuration. Edit the correct vBulletin configuration file for the installation, preserve the opening PHP tag, and keep the statement syntactically complete with its semicolon.
5. Re-enable only after the cause is understood
Once pages render normally, confirm ZLIB availability and decide which layer owns compression. Then enable the chosen layer, save, and repeat the single-header check. Do not repeatedly toggle the option without checking the server configuration, because that can hide a duplicate-compression rule rather than fix it.

- Administrator access to the vBulletin Admin CP is available.
- The path Settings → Options → Cookies and HTTP Header Options is identified; older interfaces may use vBulletin Options.
- PHP ZLIB support is confirmed for the PHP runtime serving the forum.
- mod_gzip or an equivalent server compression layer is either disabled for these responses or deliberately selected as the sole owner.
- GZIP HTML Output is set to Yes.
- The compression value is within the documented 0–9 range.
- A representative forum page returns one
Content-Encoding: gzipheader when the client supports gzip. - A rollback path is known: Admin CP first, then the documented SQL update or
DEFINE('NOZIP', 1);configuration bypass.
What this setting can and cannot tell you
Successful gzip output confirms that vBulletin or the selected server layer is encoding eligible HTML responses. It does not establish a fixed bandwidth percentage, a guaranteed page-load improvement, or a universal best compression level. Those outcomes depend on the actual pages, clients, network, PHP workload, and server configuration. Use the documented level 1 starting point, verify headers, and make any further tuning based on your own monitoring rather than an assumed benchmark.
