How to Enable Full Access for an iPhone Keyboard—and What It Allows

Allow Full Access is a per-keyboard permission that enables capabilities such as networking. Learn how to switch it on and what the permission does—and does not—mean.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To enable Open Access for a third-party iPhone keyboard, turn on that keyboard’s Allow Full Access switch in Settings. Grant it only if the keyboard’s own documentation says a feature you want requires it and you trust the provider’s privacy practices. The permission allows capabilities such as network access and a shared container; it does not, by itself, prove the keyboard sends or stores everything you type.

Enable Allow Full Access for a specific keyboard

  1. Open Settings and find the installed third-party keyboard in the keyboard settings.

  2. Open that keyboard’s settings and turn on Allow Full Access.

  3. Read the iOS permission prompt before confirming. If you cannot find the switch, check the keyboard provider’s instructions for your iOS version; Apple’s developer guidance identifies the switch but does not give a complete consumer walkthrough of every Settings screen.

    • Can't Connect the Bluetooth? Please reset the keyboard and then reconnect the Bluetooth: 1. Turn on the keyboarad; 2. Press and hold the first and the last key at the top row of the keyboard until all indicators start flashing; 3. Bluetooth light flickers quickly, auto entering Bluetooth pairing mode (If not, press Fn + 1 or 2); 4. Search and find "Wireless keyboard".
    • Multi-OS Compatible: The keyboard is widely compatible with Android, Windows and iOS devices. Also the basic typing function works with other OS devices such as fire tablets.
    • Connect 2 Devices: Seamless switching between 2 Bluetooth devices (iOS/Android/Windows) with single-tap transitions (Fn+"1"/ "2").
    • Orange Keys for Productivity Boost: The color-coded design help you to position the keys effortlessly and reduce mistyping. The orange keys are more visible than standard keys, engineered for speed typists.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: Only 6oz weight and slim 0.6in profile fits in most handbags. The flexible hinge allows you to fold it up for travel – perfect for coffee shops, flights, or campus life.

This is a per-keyboard permission. It is not the Accessibility setting called Full Keyboard Access, which is for controlling iPhone with a physical keyboard.

What Open Access changes

Third-party custom keyboards start in a restrictive sandbox. Apple says the default environment blocks network access, services that perform network operations for a process, and APIs that could exfiltrate typing data. Without Open Access, keystrokes go only to the app currently using the keyboard.

A keyboard developer must request Open Access, and you must enable it in Settings. When you do, the extension runs in the default sandbox instead of the restrictive one; Apple identifies network access and a shared container as capabilities available with Open Access. That is a change in what the extension can do, not proof of how a particular provider uses those capabilities. Whether it transmits, retains, or otherwise handles information depends on its design and privacy practices.

Decide whether to grant it

Choice What it means When it makes sense
Leave Allow Full Access off The keyboard remains in its restrictive sandbox; Apple says keystrokes go only to the app currently using it. Choose this if the keyboard’s useful features work without Open Access, or you do not want to grant its additional capabilities.
Turn Allow Full Access on The keyboard can use Open Access capabilities such as networking and a shared container. Consider this when a feature you want requires it, and you have reviewed and trust the provider’s privacy disclosures.

There is no universal feature list for keyboards that require this permission. Check the individual keyboard’s documentation to learn what feature, if any, depends on Open Access. You can also return to its switch in Settings and turn access off if you no longer want to grant it.

Where third-party keyboards still cannot be used

Enabling Open Access does not make a custom keyboard available everywhere. iOS excludes third-party keyboards from passcode input and secure text views. An app developer can also prohibit third-party keyboard extensions in that app. These restrictions are separate from the keyboard provider’s own data practices.
