Turn on dark mode for File Explorer

Under Choose your mode, select Dark.
This is Microsoft’s built-in color-mode setting for Windows 10 and Windows 11. File Explorer follows the Windows dark appearance when supported.

Set Windows and apps to different modes
Choose Custom under Choose your mode to control Windows and apps independently. Set Choose your default Windows mode to Dark if you want Windows elements, including File Explorer, dark while leaving the app mode light. You can also choose the opposite combination. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance describes this separate-mode approach.

Why an app may still appear light
Some apps have their own appearance controls, separate from Windows. Microsoft Support explains: “Some applications allow you to set dark or light mode individually, separate from the Windows color mode.” Other apps do not support dark mode, so changing the Windows setting cannot make every app dark. Check the app’s own appearance settings if it remains light. Microsoft’s color settings guidance notes that app support varies.

Dark mode versus a Windows theme
Dark mode changes the Windows and app color-mode choices; a Windows theme is a broader personalization package that can combine elements such as backgrounds, window colors, and sounds. To manage themes, open Settings > Personalization > Themes. A theme is not required to enable File Explorer’s dark appearance. Microsoft’s themes guidance explains the broader theme options.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. This support milestone does not change the color-setting path documented for Windows 10. See Microsoft Support’s Windows themes and personalization guidance.
