Enable RimWorld DLC from the server’s in-game Mod Manager. Join as an administrator, turn on Development Mode, open Admin Menu → Mod Manager, assign each DLC a status, and click Accept. Use Required when every connecting player must have the DLC, Optional when players may join either way, or Forbidden to block players who use it. If the server must enable a DLC that is not owned locally, the RimWorld Together wiki documents a manual ModConfig.json edit.

What you need before changing DLC settings
DLC is configured as part of RimWorld Together’s server mod list. You therefore need administrator access to the server, a client that can join that server, and permission to change its configuration. The exact menu wording can differ between RimWorld Together builds, so treat the labels below as the current guide path and look for equivalent labels if your build presents them differently.
- Administrator access: The Mod Manager is opened from the Admin Menu, not from the ordinary player options.
- A configuration backup: Make one before using the manual method. A bad edit can prevent the configuration from loading.
- A coordinated player setup: Tell players which DLCs are Required, Optional or Forbidden before they reconnect. Their status determines whether a mismatch is accepted.
- A save plan: If you are disabling DLC, prepare to start a new save. The guides recommend a new save to avoid synchronization problems after DLC removal.
DLC availability and ownership are separate from the server’s status rules. The normal Mod Manager route is the supported day-to-day workflow. The manual route exists for the case described by the RimWorld Together wiki: enabling a DLC without owning it by editing the server’s configuration directly.

Required, Optional and Forbidden: what each status does
Every DLC entry in the Mod Manager receives one of three statuses. Select the status based on the experience you want the server to enforce, not merely on whether the host has the DLC installed.
| Status | Who can join | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Required | Players must have that DLC installed to join. | Use it when the save or server rules depend on the DLC and everyone should load the same content. |
| Optional | Players may join whether or not they have the DLC installed. | Use it when the server should remain accessible to players with different DLC libraries. |
| Forbidden | Players using that DLC are prevented from joining. | Use it when you want to keep a DLC out of the session or avoid clients loading content the server does not permit. |
These rules are a key difference from a setup that requires every player’s DLC list to match exactly. RimWorld Together lets the server owner decide whether a DLC is mandatory, tolerated, or blocked.
Method 1: enable DLC with the in-game Mod Manager
This is the primary method because it keeps the change inside RimWorld Together’s administrative interface and reduces the chance of malformed configuration data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Join the server as an administrator. Connect with the account that has server-admin privileges. A normal player will not have the administrative path used in the next steps.
- Open the Options menu. Turn on Development Mode. The setting exposes the tools needed to administer the active server.
- Open the Admin Menu. With Development Mode enabled, select Mod Manager. If you do not see the Admin Menu, verify that you joined with admin rights and that Development Mode is actually enabled.
- Set a status for each DLC. For every DLC listed by the manager, choose Required, Optional or Forbidden. Do not leave the policy to guesswork: Required changes the join requirement, Optional permits mixed ownership, and Forbidden rejects clients that use the DLC.
- Click Accept. Confirm the complete list rather than changing one entry and leaving the manager without accepting. The accepted list becomes the server’s DLC/mod policy.
- Have players reconnect and test the policy. Ask one player with the DLC and one without it to join when the status is Optional. For a Required DLC, verify that a player who lacks it is rejected as expected; for a Forbidden DLC, verify that a player who uses it is rejected.
When a new RimWorld Together game is created, guides report that the first player to join may be prompted to configure the mod and DLC list. If that prompt appears, use it to establish the same Required, Optional or Forbidden policy before the group begins the save.

If the Mod Manager is not visible
- Confirm that Development Mode was enabled from the Options menu while you were connected to the server.
- Confirm that the account joining the server is an administrator. Admin tools are not presented to ordinary players.
- Look for equivalent labels if the RimWorld Together build uses a different menu layout. The documented path is Options → Development Mode, then Admin Menu → Mod Manager.
- If the tool still does not appear, leave and rejoin after checking the server’s admin assignment rather than attempting random configuration edits.
Method 2: enable an unowned DLC by editing ModConfig.json
The RimWorld Together wiki describes a manual workaround for enabling DLC that the person configuring the server does not own. This is a file-editing procedure, not a replacement for the Mod Manager when the normal interface is available. Use it only when you understand how to restore the original file.
1. Stop making live changes and create a backup
Before opening the file, preserve an untouched copy of the server’s ModConfig.json. Keep the backup outside the location you are editing and record which file is the original. If the server management panel provides a stop or maintenance control, use the normal stop procedure before editing so the running process cannot overwrite your changes.
2. Open the RimWorld Together ModConfig.json
Open the ModConfig.json used by the RimWorld Together server. Hosting panels and installations expose this file in different places, so use the location documented for your server installation rather than assuming a universal path. The relevant entries are the arrays named UnsortedMods, AllModIds and RequiredMods.

3. Add the DLC ID in all three required locations
For the DLC you want to enable, add its ID to each of those three arrays. The wiki’s rule is precise:

- [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- Add the DLC ID to
UnsortedMods. - Add the DLC ID to
AllModIds; DLC entries use the value0in this list. - Add the DLC ID to
RequiredMods.
Insert the entries in the same order in all three places. Do not add an entry to only one array, and do not change the order in one array while leaving the other two in a different order. The ID must be the exact ID expected by the game’s configuration; do not substitute a display name.
4. Preserve valid JSON syntax
Keep quotation marks, commas, square brackets and braces balanced. A missing comma or stray character can make the configuration unreadable. Save the file, then run it through a JSON validator before returning the server to normal operation. A validator checks syntax; it does not prove that the DLC ID is correct, so check both.
5. Restore the server and verify the result
Put the edited file back in the server’s normal configuration location and start the server using its ordinary procedure. Join as an administrator and inspect the Mod Manager or the first-player configuration prompt. If the DLC does not appear, restore the backup and repeat the ID check instead of layering more edits onto a file that may already be invalid.

Choosing a policy for a mixed-DLC group
Use Required when the session depends on the DLC
Required is the strict policy. It prevents a player without the DLC from joining, which avoids a client entering a session that expects content the client cannot load. Announce the requirement before players connect and have everyone install the DLC before troubleshooting other connection issues.

Use Optional when access matters more than identical ownership
Optional is the flexible policy. It allows players with and without the DLC to join, making it suitable for a group whose members own different combinations of content. Because Optional deliberately permits a mixed setup, document which game features the group intends to use so players know what they may or may not see.
Use Forbidden when the DLC must not be present
Forbidden blocks players who use the selected DLC. Choose it when the server’s rules or save plan excludes that content. A player who is rejected under Forbidden should remove or disable the DLC on the client before attempting to join again.

DLC changes can affect the synchronization assumptions of an existing multiplayer world. The guides specifically recommend creating a new save when disabling DLC, rather than continuing an old save with content removed. Treat that as the safe migration path: decide the final DLC policy first, configure it, and then create the new game with that policy in place.

Mods that can make DLC changes risky
RimWorld Together handles DLCs like mods for configuration purposes. Guides identify mods that change the world map or factions as the most likely to cause problems and strongly recommend enforcing those mods. In practice, that means using a policy that keeps every participating client aligned instead of allowing an uncontrolled mix. If a world-map or faction-changing mod is part of the same setup, treat it as a compatibility decision alongside the DLC list, not as an unrelated cosmetic add-on.
- For content that changes the world or factions, prefer a consistent, enforced setup across the group.
- Do not use Optional merely to avoid discussing a mod that changes the generated world; confirm that all players can load the same arrangement.
- If synchronization errors begin after a configuration change, test with a new save and the smallest supported mod/DLC set before restoring additional content.
Verification checklist after enabling DLC
- Join as an administrator and confirm that the expected DLC entries are present in Mod Manager.
- Check every entry’s status against the group’s plan: Required, Optional or Forbidden.
- Click Accept after the final change.
- For a new game, watch for the first-player prompt to configure the mod and DLC list.
- Test the actual join rule with an appropriate client: a client that has the DLC and one that does not, where the policy permits that comparison.
- Keep the pre-edit
ModConfig.jsonbackup until the group has connected successfully and the save has been verified. - If DLC was disabled, use a new save rather than relying on an old world to synchronize cleanly.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Admin Menu or Mod Manager is missing
The usual causes are an account without administrator privileges or Development Mode not being enabled. Rejoin with the server-admin account, open Options, enable Development Mode, and then look again for Admin Menu → Mod Manager. If labels differ, use the equivalent administrative mod-management screen in your build.
A player is refused at the join screen
Check the DLC status first. A Required DLC rejects a player who does not have it; a Forbidden DLC rejects a player who does have it. If the entry is meant to allow both groups, change it to Optional, accept the change, and have the player reconnect.
The manual edit causes a configuration error
Restore the backup, then inspect the three arrays for balanced punctuation, a missing comma or an ID inserted in only one location. Validate the JSON before trying again. Remember that AllModIds uses 0 for DLC entries and that the same ID order must be maintained in UnsortedMods, AllModIds and RequiredMods.
The DLC does not appear after editing
Confirm that you edited the ModConfig.json used by the active server, not a local client copy or an unused backup. Check the exact DLC ID and verify that it was added to all three arrays. If the file is valid but the entry still does not load, restore the backup and use the in-game Mod Manager where possible.
Players experience synchronization problems after disabling DLC
Do not keep modifying the same save in an attempt to repair it. Preserve the existing world, set the final DLC policy, and create a new save as recommended by the guides. Also review world-map and faction-changing mods, which are identified as especially likely to create compatibility problems.
Quick Recap
Which method should you use?
| Situation | Best route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You own and can select the DLC normally | In-game Mod Manager | It is the primary administrative workflow and exposes the three supported statuses. |
| You need players with different DLC libraries to join | Mod Manager, set the DLC to Optional | Optional explicitly permits clients with or without the DLC. |
| Everyone must have the DLC | Mod Manager, set the DLC to Required | Clients without the DLC are prevented from joining. |
| The DLC must not be used | Mod Manager, set the DLC to Forbidden | Clients using the DLC are prevented from joining. |
| The server must enable a DLC that is not owned locally | Manual ModConfig.json edit | The wiki documents adding the DLC ID to three arrays, with 0 in AllModIds. |
