On Android 4.2 and later, open Settings, find Build number, and tap it seven times. Enter your device PIN or password if asked. When Android confirms you are a developer, return to Settings and open Developer options. The exact menu location varies by phone maker; revealing the menu does not turn on USB debugging.
Enable Developer options
- Open Settings and go to the Build number location for your device (paths are listed below).
- Tap Build number seven times. Android Developers says to continue until you see “You are now a developer!”
- If prompted, enter the device PIN, password, or other screen-lock credential.
- Return to the previous Settings screen and look for Developer options. It may be near the bottom of Settings or nested under System or an Advanced section.
On Android 4.1 and earlier, Developer options is available by default, so the seven-tap procedure is not needed. Android Developers: Configure on-device developer options

Find Build number on common Android phones
Google documents these representative paths. Menu names can differ by model, Android version, and manufacturer software.

If your phone is not listed, search Settings for “Build number.” If that does not find it, check the manufacturer’s current support instructions rather than assuming another phone’s menu path applies. Developer options is not the same as USB debugging
The seven taps reveal the Developer options menu; they do not enable USB debugging. You only need USB debugging when Android Studio or another Android SDK tool must communicate with the device. For simply revealing the menu, you do not need to turn on debugging or change other developer settings. Android Developers: Configure on-device developer options

These are the paths in the cited Android Developers guidance; your phone’s interface may differ. A cable is relevant only if you are setting up a wired connection to a computer, not for enabling Developer options. What the Developer options switch does
If you use options in this menu, leave its master switch on. Android Developers says turning it off disables most options, with exceptions for options that do not require communication between the device and a development computer. The menu contains system and development controls, so revealing it alone is not a reason to change settings you do not need. Android Developers: Configure on-device developer options
