How to Add, Edit, or Remove a Hyperlink in Google Docs

Add a clickable link, update its destination or display text, remove it, or point readers to a bookmark inside a Google Doc.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In Google Docs on a computer, select text—or place the cursor where a link should go—then choose Insert > Link, enter a URL or email address, and click Apply. To change or remove an existing link, click it and choose Change or Remove.

Add a hyperlink in Google Docs

  1. Select the text you want readers to click. To insert a link without selected text, click where it should appear in the document.
  2. Choose Insert > Link, or use Ctrl+K on a PC or ⌘+K on a Mac.
  3. In the link dialog, enter a URL or email address. You can also search for a website.
  4. Click Apply.

When you selected text first, that text becomes the clickable link. If you placed the cursor without selecting text, Docs inserts the link at that location.

Edit or remove an existing link

Change the destination or linked text

  1. Click the existing link in the document.
  2. Choose Change to edit its destination or the text displayed as the link. On a computer, Ctrl+K on a PC or ⌘+K on a Mac also opens the insert-or-edit link control.
  3. Make the change and apply it.

Remove the hyperlink

  1. Click the link.
  2. Select Remove. This removes the link while leaving the text in the document.

Link to a place inside the same document

To send readers to a specific location within a Google Doc, create a bookmark at the destination, then link to that bookmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place the cursor at the location readers should reach and create a bookmark.
  2. Select the text that should link to it.
  3. Choose Insert > Link, then open Bookmarks.
  4. Select the destination bookmark and click Apply.

Bookmarks for this workflow are available in Docs, not in Sheets or Slides.
