How to enable developer mode in Android Auto, why you should

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Developer Mode in Android Auto is a set of extra switches and diagnostics intended for deeper troubleshooting—usually when something is flaky with connectivity, audio, or app behavior. When you turn it on, Android Auto may expose additional developer-facing options tied to how the system logs and surfaces debug data.

Because Android Auto’s UI and feature availability change across versions, this guide focuses on the reliable, phone-side steps to enable developer options and the practical reasons to use them. It also covers what to do when the toggle doesn’t appear.

What Android Auto Developer Mode does (and doesn’t)

Developer Mode is designed to help you identify problems faster by exposing internal information, enabling extra debug actions, or allowing additional testing behaviors. Depending on your Android Auto version (and whether you’re using a cable or wireless connection), you may see different options.

It’s not the same thing as unlocking hidden car settings, and it doesn’t “hack” your vehicle. If you’re expecting major feature unlocks, you’ll likely be disappointed. The value is almost always in diagnostics and controlled testing.

CONMDEX Android Auto USB Cable [3ft, 2-Pack] 10Gbps, 3A Fast Charging
  • [Reliable Car Connectivity & Android Auto] Engineered specifically to solve "falling short" connection issues in vehicles. This cable provides a stable, high-speed link for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ensuring consistent navigation and music streaming in models like the Ford Raptor and other modern consoles
  • [True 10Gbps Ultra-Fast Data Sync] Eliminate data transfer bottlenecks with genuine USB 3.1 Gen 2 performance. Move 4K movies or entire photo libraries in seconds at 10Gbps—speeds significantly faster than standard USB 3.0 cables that often drop to 40Mbps
  • [Built for Tidy Spaces & Durability] The 3ft length is the "perfect length" for car consoles and tidy desktop setups, eliminating excess cable clutter. Featuring an aluminum alloy case and premium nylon braiding, it is manufactured to prevent loose wires and fraying near the plugs
  • [Versatile One-for-All Functionality] A single solution for your high-speed ecosystem. Seamlessly connects the latest iPhone 18 Pro Max Duo/17/16, Samsung Galaxy S26/S25/S24 Ultra, PS5/PS4 controllers, and external SSDs to USB-A ports
  • [Charging & Compatibility Boundaries] Provides efficient 3A/18W fast charging for smartphones and tablets. Please note: This cable is optimized for mobile devices and is not intended for high-wattage laptops (65W+) or use cases requiring cables longer than 3 feet

Why you should enable it

There are a few solid, practical reasons to enable developer mode—especially if you’re the type who troubleshoots before giving up.

  • Get clearer diagnostics for crashes and freezes. When Android Auto apps misbehave, developer options can help you capture the evidence you need.
  • Debug connection issues (USB or wireless). If Android Auto drops, stutters, or won’t start, extra debug/logging options can shorten the time-to-cause.
  • Verify changes after updates. When a new Android Auto release lands, developer mode can help you confirm whether the issue is resolved.
  • Support faster issue reports. If you contact Google support or community forums, logs and timestamps often matter more than screenshots.

When you should skip it: If everything works well and you don’t need troubleshooting, leaving Developer Mode off is usually the cleanest option.

Prerequisites and what to check first

Before you start, make sure you’re working with the correct app and environment. Developer options typically live in the Android Auto app’s UI on your phone, not inside the car dashboard.

Check your basics

  • Android phone compatible with Android Auto (Android Auto app installed).
  • Latest stable Android Auto app available to you. On many devices this means updating via Google Play.
  • Android Auto running at least once with your vehicle (so the app has its usual settings populated).

Update to reduce UI mismatches

Developer Mode visibility is sensitive to version. If you’re on an older build, you might not see the tap-to-enable flow at all. Consider updating Android Auto to a current Play Store version, then check again.

How to enable Developer Mode in Android Auto (phone-side)

In most setups, the enable flow is triggered by tapping the Android Auto app’s version information repeatedly. The exact labels can vary, so follow the intent: open Android Auto app settings, find About, then tap the version/build line multiple times until Developer options appear.

Method A: Enable from Android Auto app About screen

  1. On your Android phone, open the Android Auto app.
  2. Tap the menu (often a gear icon or three-dot icon) and go to Settings.
  3. Scroll to About (sometimes listed as About Android Auto).
  4. Find a line like Android Auto version, Version, or Build number.
  5. Tap the version/build line 7 times (common pattern for enabling hidden options).
  6. Watch for a message such as Developer mode enabled or a similar confirmation.
  7. Go back to Settings to look for a new section such as Developer, Developer options, or For developers.

If you reach step 6 and there’s no confirmation, repeat with a slower pace (sometimes taps need to be within the same short interval). Also ensure you’re tapping the correct “version” row—not a nearby description line.

Method B: If you don’t see Developer options (version/UI variations)

Some Android Auto builds show developer controls only after you connect to a compatible head unit at least once. If you’re missing the menu entry after the taps, try this approach.

  1. Connect your phone to the car via USB first (best for consistent behavior), then start Android Auto.
  2. Open the Android Auto app on your phone again and re-check Settings > About.
  3. If the tap-to-enable method still doesn’t work, confirm the app is updated from Google Play.
  4. Restart your phone, then try the tap sequence again.
  5. If you use a work profile or restricted profile, temporarily check that Android Auto has permission to show full settings for that profile.

What settings you may see after enabling

Because Android Auto evolves, your exact options can differ. Here are common categories you might encounter once developer mode is enabled:

  • Debug/logging toggles (e.g., enhanced logging, showing debug info)
  • Testing or simulation controls (varies widely)
  • Diagnostic actions (export logs, send bug report hooks)
  • Connection-related test flags (often only relevant to wireless vs USB)

When you see an option, read its label carefully. Some toggles are meant to be temporary and can affect performance.

How to use Developer Mode features safely

Developer Mode can be useful and also easy to overdo. Treat it like a troubleshooting tool: turn it on, capture what you need, then turn it off.

Collect logs and report issues

If your goal is support, do it like a pro: reproduce the issue once, then collect logs while it’s fresh. If Android Auto offers a “share” or “send logs” option, use it right away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Reproduce the issue (e.g., dropouts, app not launching, audio cutting out) within the first few minutes.
  2. In Developer Mode, look for a logs or bug report action.
  3. Note the time, connection type (USB/wireless), and vehicle model if you’re reporting to support.

Test reliably (USB vs wireless)

If you’re debugging connectivity, don’t mix variables. Use one connection type at a time.

  • USB: best when you need stable power/data and fewer variables.
  • Wireless: best when the bug only occurs over Wi‑Fi/BT.

If you’re seeing intermittent issues, test at least 2–3 runs per connection type so your evidence isn’t based on one fluke event.

Turn it off when you’re done

After you’ve captured logs or validated a fix, return to the Developer Mode area and disable it. If the UI includes a “reset” action, don’t use it unless you’re trying to restore defaults and you’re comfortable with reconfiguring anything it affects.

Troubleshooting: Developer Mode toggle not showing

If Developer options don’t appear after the tap sequence, don’t assume your phone is broken. Android Auto’s UI can hide things based on version, connection state, or app state.

Checklist to try in order

  1. Confirm Android Auto app is updated. Go to Google Play and update Android Auto.
  2. Force stop then reopen. Settings > Apps > Android Auto > Force stop, then open Android Auto again.
  3. Clear cache (not data first). Settings > Apps > Android Auto > Storage > Clear cache.
  4. Connect again. Plug in USB (or reconnect wireless) and start Android Auto once before checking Settings > About.
  5. Double-check you’re tapping the exact version line. Some screens show multiple versions (car/phone). Tap only the Android Auto app version/build.
  6. Try tapping with the screen awake. Don’t lock the screen mid-tap sequence.

If enabling works, but options don’t change behavior

That can happen if the toggle you’re changing only affects diagnostics that are not directly visible in the UI. In that case, verify with logs or by checking whether the issue reproduction improves.

  • Look for a “restart required” message.
  • Reproduce the issue after toggling, rather than expecting immediate behavior changes.
  • If there’s an “export logs” option, compare log output before/after you toggle.

Common gotchas

  • Wrong app: Make sure you’re in the Android Auto app, not a car’s built-in mode or a different integration.
  • Multiple profiles: Work profiles or restricted profiles can limit settings visibility.
  • Battery optimizations: Aggressive power saving can interfere with logging. If you’re troubleshooting, temporarily adjust battery optimization for Android Auto.
  • Outdated vehicle firmware: Some issues are on the car side. Developer Mode can help prove it, but it won’t fix incompatible integrations.

Comparisons and alternatives

Developer Mode in Android Auto isn’t the only way to troubleshoot. Depending on what’s broken, you may get more value from Android phone Developer options or from app-level logging/reporting.

Use Android phone Developer options instead

Android phone Developer options don’t specifically “enable Android Auto Developer Mode,” but they can help when you’re debugging USB behavior, debugging transports, or screen/audio related issues. If you already have phone-level Developer options enabled, you can combine them with Android Auto’s settings for more complete evidence.

However, don’t blindly turn on everything. If you’re unsure, enable only the items you need for the specific problem you’re investigating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use logs/bug reports without Developer Mode

Some Android Auto versions include a “report problem” flow even when Developer Mode is off. If your main goal is submitting diagnostics, check Android Auto settings first for reporting options.

FAQs

Does enabling Developer Mode permanently change Android Auto?

No. Developer Mode is a settings state you can typically disable later. That said, the exact controls and persistence behavior can vary by Android Auto version, so check for a toggle to turn it off.

Will Developer Mode affect performance or battery life?

It can. Debug logging and diagnostic features may add overhead. If you notice increased battery drain or stuttering, disable Developer Mode after you collect the data you need.

Is Developer Mode safe to use?

It’s intended for troubleshooting and isn’t the same as granting privileged system permissions. Still, only enable what you need, avoid experimenting with unknown flags, and don’t share sensitive logs publicly.

I enabled it, but I can’t find the Developer section anywhere. What should I do?

First confirm you’re on the Android Auto app Settings screen and not a different “Android Auto for…” screen. Then update the app, force stop, and reconnect to the car (USB is the most consistent test path).

Bottom Line

Enabling developer mode in Android Auto is best treated as a troubleshooting lever: it can expose extra diagnostics and make it easier to capture logs when connectivity, audio, or app behavior misfires. If you’re dealing with a stubborn bug, it’s often faster to turn it on, reproduce once, capture evidence, and turn it back off.

Because Android Auto’s UI varies by version, if the toggle doesn’t appear, focus on updating the app, reconnecting to the car, and confirming you’re tapping the exact version/build line under Android Auto Settings > About.
