How to Enable ArchiveBox Single-File HTML Captures

Use --plugins=singlefile for a one-off ArchiveBox capture, or configure PLUGINS at the right persistent scope to save singlefile.html routinely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To save an ArchiveBox capture as a standalone singlefile.html, run archivebox add --plugins=singlefile 'https://example.com'. For repeated captures, set PLUGINS=singlefile at the appropriate Crawl, Snapshot, or Persona scope, or select the extractor in the admin Add form or API.

Run SingleFile for one URL

  1. Open a shell in the environment where ArchiveBox is installed.
  2. Run archivebox add --plugins=singlefile 'https://example.com', replacing the example URL with the page you want to archive.
  3. After the capture completes, look in that snapshot’s output folder for singlefile.html.

The --plugins option selects plugins for this add run. You can include other extractors as a comma-separated list, for example --plugins=singlefile,favicon. SingleFile uses headless Chrome; ArchiveBox’s configuration documentation says the required chrome plugin is pulled in automatically when you select singlefile. ArchiveBox configuration and its repository describe plugin configuration and dependencies.

Enable it for ongoing captures

A command-line flag applies to the current add run. To have future captures use SingleFile, configure the plugin at the scope that owns those captures or choose it when adding a capture through the interface or API.

Set a persistent plugin configuration

ArchiveBox settings can be supplied through archivebox config, the collection’s ArchiveBox.conf, or environment variables. Set PLUGINS=singlefile using the method and scope appropriate to your setup; these configuration methods also work with Docker. Review the effective configuration for the relevant Crawl, Snapshot, or Persona: more specific stored settings can override process defaults, and changing an environment variable does not silently rewrite existing Crawl configuration. See the configuration guide for scope and precedence details.

Select it in the admin interface or API

For an individual capture added through ArchiveBox’s admin Add form or API, select the SingleFile extractor there rather than relying on a process-wide default. This is useful when only some captures need a standalone HTML artifact.

Check the saved output and installation

ArchiveBox documents the artifact as singlefile.html, an HTML snapshot rendered with headless Chrome using SingleFile. Snapshot outputs are stored as ordinary files in the snapshot folder. The repository lists SingleFile among optional extractor dependencies and says archivebox install resolves extractor dependencies. Whether a particular installation already has those dependencies is installation-specific; consult the repository and your local setup if the extractor is unavailable.

Do not confuse the server extractor with the browser extension

ArchiveBox’s browser extension has a separate local-capture route. Its README says making local HTML copies requires the optional SingleFile extension to be installed and connected. That browser workflow is distinct from selecting ArchiveBox’s server-side singlefile plugin. See the browser extension README.

Troubleshoot missing SingleFile output

  • The add command ran, but no singlefile.html appears: Check that the add run selected singlefile, then inspect the specific snapshot output folder. Confirm the extractor dependencies are available for that ArchiveBox installation.
  • Ongoing captures ignore PLUGINS=singlefile: Check the saved Crawl, Snapshot, or Persona settings. A more specific persisted configuration can take precedence over process defaults; changing the environment does not rewrite existing Crawl configuration.
  • The browser extension does not save a local HTML copy: Install and connect its optional SingleFile extension. This is separate from the server-side ArchiveBox extractor.
  • You want other extractors as well: Pass a comma-separated list to --plugins, such as singlefile, favicon, and choose the combination that fits the capture.
