Start at Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Check which apps and content categories use the most space, review Apple’s recommendations, then remove or relocate items you can safely do without. The right choice depends on whether you want to keep app data, retain offline access, or sync photos through iCloud.
How to find what is using iPhone storage
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Review the available-space figure, category breakdown, app list and any recommendations. Select a large app to compare its app size with its documents and data.
- Choose cleanup targets based on what you recognize and can replace or restore. After each cleanup, return to the storage screen and check the result; the amount recovered depends on the phone’s contents and sync state.
Apple’s categories can include apps and their content, files stored On My iPhone, Safari downloads, photos, media, mail, books, messages, locally downloaded iCloud Drive content, Other and System. Cached and temporary data may not be included in an app’s displayed use, so the number shown may not equal the space a particular action frees. Apple’s storage breakdown guide explains what the categories represent.

Should you offload or delete an app?
| Choice | What happens | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Offload App | Removes the app but keeps its documents and data on the iPhone. The app can be reinstalled later, subject to availability. | You want to reclaim the app’s installation space while retaining its data. |
| Delete App | Removes the app and its related data from the iPhone. | You no longer need the app or accept losing its local data. |
Use the app’s entry in iPhone Storage to choose the available action. Apple says that when storage is low, iPhone may remove an app while keeping its documents and data; this is the behavior behind offloading. Before deleting an app, check whether anything important exists only inside it. Apple’s iPhone storage guide covers offloading and storage recommendations.
Remove downloads and files you no longer need
Downloaded shows and other offline media
Delete episodes or films you have already watched if you do not need them offline. Check the TV app’s downloaded content and the download sections of streaming apps; those apps manage their own offline files. Removing a download frees local device space, but the title may need an internet connection and another download to watch again.

Free photo space without confusing iPhone and iCloud storage
iPhone storage is the capacity on the device. iCloud storage is a separate online quota. Syncing photos or storing originals in iCloud can reduce the device’s use, but it does not create more iCloud capacity.
Use Optimize iPhone Storage
If iCloud Photos is enabled, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos and select Optimize iPhone Storage (labels can vary by iOS version). Space-saving versions remain on the iPhone while full-resolution originals are stored in iCloud. This requires iCloud Photos syncing and uses iCloud storage; it is not an offline backup. Apple says a new iCloud account includes 5 GB of free storage, which is an iCloud quota rather than extra device storage. See Apple’s photo and video storage guidance.

Transfer photos to a computer
If you do not want to store the photo library in iCloud, Apple lists transferring photos and videos to a computer as an alternative. Confirm the transfer completed and that the files open before removing anything from the iPhone. Apple’s guidance establishes a computer transfer option; it does not specify a direct iPhone-to-external-drive workflow.
Understand synced deletion before removing photos
With iCloud Photos, deleting a photo on one device deletes it from other devices using the same library. Apple states that deleted photos may be recoverable in Recently Deleted for 30 days, subject to the circumstances described in its iCloud storage guidance. Do not treat that recovery window as a backup: keep a separate copy of photos you want to preserve before deleting them.

What to leave alone—and how much space to keep free
Other and System are storage categories, not reliable manual cleanup targets. Focus instead on identifiable apps, downloads, files, media and messages. Apple advises keeping at least 1 GB of free space for performance; this is general guidance accessed in 2026, not a guarantee for every iPhone model or workload. Menu labels can differ by iOS release and region, so use the current wording on your device if it differs from an older walkthrough. The built-in storage screen is the sensible starting point; the Apple guidance cited here does not establish that a cleaner utility or factory reset is routinely necessary.
