For wide Markdown tables in Notepad++, choose the editing method that matches the shape of your change: use column mode for a rectangular edit across neighboring lines, multi-edit for a few separate positions, and the Markdown Table Editor plugin for table-specific work such as aligning columns or moving rows. Notepad++ treats Markdown as text, so its built-in selection tools do not automatically understand table cells.
Choose an editing method for the change you need

Use column mode for a consistent rectangular edit
Column mode is useful when the same text change applies across neighboring lines at a consistent character position—for example, adding a prefix to several rows. The Notepad++ manual documents rectangular column selections, including keyboard and mouse methods, and explains that the Column / Multi-Selection Editor is available at Edit > Column Editor. It can insert the same text on each selected row or insert a numeric sequence.

Markdown pipe tables are plain text, not fixed-width grids. Cell contents can have different lengths, so a cell in one row may not start at the same character position as the corresponding cell in another. Use column mode for genuinely rectangular source edits; avoid assuming it will target an entire logical table column when the text positions shift between rows.

Use multi-edit for separate positions
When the edits are not vertically aligned, use multiple carets instead of forcing a rectangular selection. If multi-editing is enabled, hold Ctrl and click each position where you want a caret. To create multiple selections, the manual also describes Ctrl-click-dragging after making an initial selection. The setting is under Settings > Preferences > Editing 2.
This approach is practical for a few repeated edits, such as changing text in several nonadjacent cells. If the task requires many row or column changes, placing and checking numerous carets can become cumbersome; a table-aware editor is more appropriate.

Use Markdown Table Editor for table structure and alignment
The Notepad++ plugin catalog lists Markdown Table Editor for 32-bit and 64-bit Notepad++. Its catalog description includes aligning tables, fitting or narrowing and widening columns, navigating tables, inserting, deleting, moving, and sorting rows or columns, converting CSV or TSV blocks, and inserting tables.
The project repository describes releases for x86, x64, and ARM64. That architecture information does not by itself establish compatibility with a particular Notepad++ version. A practical workflow for wide tables
- Keep the table in a Markdown file. Work with the pipe-table source in your
.mdfile so you can see the literal pipes and alignment markers. - Classify the edit. Choose column mode for a rectangular change across adjacent lines, multi-edit for a few unaligned locations, or the plugin for table layout and structural operations.
- Make the edit and inspect the source. Check that pipes and the separator row remain where intended. Because the built-in selection tools edit text positions rather than Markdown cells, review the affected rows after a broad edit.
- Use table-specific operations when reorganizing. For alignment, width changes, or inserting, deleting, moving, or sorting rows and columns, use the plugin’s documented table operations rather than trying to simulate them with many text selections.
What Notepad++ does—and does not—do for a Markdown table
Notepad++ supplies column mode, multi-editing, and the Column Editor as general editing tools. They can speed up repeated text changes, but they do not turn a Markdown table into a spreadsheet-like grid. The plugin catalog describes table-aware operations, while exact version compatibility and setup depend on the current plugin release.
