You can replace a few words in a flattened image without Photoshop by selecting the existing lettering, entering the replacement, and letting an image editor reconstruct the background and render the new text. The result is a generated repair—not recovery of the original font layer—so inspect it closely before sharing or publishing.
What “editing text” in a finished image actually means
A flattened image stores the lettering as pixels, not as editable text. To change it, a tool must first remove or cover the old words, rebuild the pixels behind them, and then place new lettering in a plausible style. That differs from adding a text overlay, which simply puts new words over the old ones.

This approach is best suited to small, localized changes such as a price, date, label, typo, or short poster line. If you still have the layered source file—or need to change a wider layout, preserve exact brand typography, or adjust effects—use the original design app when possible.

How to replace text in a finished image
- Work from a copy. Use an image you have permission to edit. Check the editor’s accepted formats; for example, Imagelier lists JPEG, PNG, and WebP on its product page.
- Select the old lettering. Some editors identify words automatically; others ask you to mark the region. Fotor describes OCR-assisted text detection and editable highlights on its image text editor page. ImageTextEdit recommends a tight selection so the tool has nearby pixels to use when reconstructing the background and style: ImageTextEdit.
- Enter the replacement exactly. Short copy is the clearest fit. Check spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and numbers before generating.
- Generate, then inspect the result. Compare it with the source and check letter shapes, spacing, background texture, perspective, and nearby details. If something looks wrong, refine the selection or any style guidance and try again.
Which kind of tool fits the job?
These examples are based on what the vendors say their products do; they are not independent performance tests. They illustrate different workflows rather than identify the unnamed freemium tool in the title.

What affects the quality of the edit?
- Selection: Mark the lettering closely without cutting off its edges. A focused selection gives the reconstruction process local background and styling context.
- Legibility and design: Clear, larger text is generally a better candidate than small, blurry, dense, curved, repeated, or heavily stylized lettering.
- Background: A simple background is easier to reconstruct than a busy scene with fine patterns, overlapping objects, or important details behind the words.
- Review: Treat the generated result as a draft. Check every character as well as the visual fit; a plausible-looking edit can still contain misspelled or malformed text.
These limits matter most when accuracy is important. The cited product pages describe vendor workflows and cautions, not independently verified success rates.
When to use another workflow
If your goal is to remove words without replacing them, a generative removal tool may be enough. If you need exact typeface control, freely positioned editable text, or changes across a larger composition, return to the layered file or use a design editor that retains editable text. A flattened-image text replacement tool cannot restore a font file or the original editable layer; Reword Image states this limitation on its product page.
