DayZ player spawn locations are controlled by cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xml. Stop the server, make a backup, edit the generator_posbubbles position list—usually inside the fresh section—then restart and test in-game. Remove default points you do not want and add your own coordinates by copying the file’s existing point format.

The file also contains hop and travel sections for players moving between servers or maps. Most community servers only need to tune fresh. Because current 2026 behavior is not confirmed by a dated reference, retain the original file and verify every change on your specific server build.

cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xml defines where the game looks for player spawn positions. It is separate from the files that control loot and item behavior:

Changing types.xml will not move a survivor’s starting location. For that, edit only the player-spawn file and leave the other XML files unchanged unless you are deliberately changing loot or limits as a separate task.

Understand the three sections before editing
Vanilla-style files divide spawn generation into three sections. Each section has its own spawn_params, generator_params, and generator_posbubbles areas.
Fresh
fresh is the required section for a newly spawned character. It is the section server owners normally customize when they want to move general player starts. Its generator_posbubbles list contains the default areas sampled for a fresh spawn.
Hop
hop is intended for a player transferring between servers that use the same map. It is mainly relevant to official-style server networks. If your server is standalone and you are changing ordinary respawns, leave this section as shipped unless you have a specific server-transfer design.
Travel
travel handles a player arriving from another map. Like hop, it matters primarily in official-style multi-server arrangements. Editing fresh does not automatically change these transfer scenarios.
The Bohemia Interactive Community Wiki and the offline-mode vanilla file published by Arkensor show this fresh/hop/travel organization. A much older page also describes a different spawn-element structure, so do not merge snippets from that format into a current vanilla-style file. Start with the complete file supplied by your server and preserve its element names and nesting.

Prepare the server and make a safe backup
- Stop the server completely. Use your host’s Stop or Shutdown control and wait until the console reports that the process has ended. Nitrado’s instructions specifically call for stopping before editing; changing a live file can be overwritten at the next save or leave a partially written configuration.
- Download the original file. Save an untouched copy with a date in its filename, such as
cfgPlayerSpawnPoints-original-2026-10-14.xml. Keep it outside the active configuration directory. - Record the map and build. Note whether the server runs Chernarus, Livonia, or Sakhal and record the game/server version shown by the host. Coordinates are map-specific; a point that is valid on one map is not transferable to another.
- Plan a rollback. If the server refuses to start or players stop receiving valid spawns, restore the original file, start the server, and test before attempting a smaller change.
Find coordinates that are suitable for spawns
You need coordinates for each area you intend to add. A map tool can help you identify roads, coastlines, towns, and open ground; some administrators also read coordinates from server log player-position lines when their host exposes them. Treat either source as an estimate and validate the resulting spawn in the game.

A spawn entry is used as an area from which the generator searches for a valid position. Community documentation describes each point as the centre of a sampled rectangle or “bubble,” so a survivor may appear near the coordinate rather than on the exact object you selected. Do not place the centre inside a building, on a cliff, in deep water, or on a narrow bridge.
- Use walkable terrain with several nearby escape routes.
- Keep enough distance from dense object clutter, military interiors, and steep slopes to leave the generator room to find a valid location.
- Distribute points across the intended region instead of stacking every point in one town.
- For a coastal-start design, place several points along the coast rather than one exact beach coordinate; this reduces repeated collisions with rocks, walls, and water.
Account for the map
Chernarus, Livonia, and Sakhal use different coordinate spaces and terrain. If you import a file created for another map, every position must be replaced or checked. Keep a small coordinate list beside your XML while editing so you can identify which point produced a problem during testing.
Edit generator_posbubbles manually
The safest manual method is to preserve the schema already present in your file. Do not invent new tag names or copy a configuration from a different DayZ release.
- Open the server’s configuration directory. In a hosting control panel this is usually File Manager, FTP, or a configuration editor. The exact path and interface label vary by provider; search for the filename rather than assuming a particular folder.
- Open
cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xmlin a plain-text editor. Avoid word processors that add formatting or smart quotes. - Locate the
freshsection. Confirm that you are inside the fresh section’sgenerator_posbubblesblock, not the similarly named block underhoportravel. - Remove unwanted defaults. Nitrado’s procedure is to delete the existing spawn-point entries you do not want. Remove complete point elements, including their opening and closing tags; never delete only one coordinate attribute or a closing tag.
- Add your points using an existing element as the template. Copy one complete point element from the same
generator_posbubbleslist, paste it for each new location, and change only the coordinate values. Keeping the original element name, attribute names, decimal format, and nesting avoids the structure conflict reported between older community examples and the vanilla file. - Leave the surrounding parameters intact on the first pass. Do not change
spawn_paramsorgenerator_paramsuntil you have proved that the position list works. A position-only change makes failures easier to diagnose. - Check XML well-formedness. Every element must close, quotation marks must pair, and the document must have one root element. If your editor has XML validation, run it before uploading. A parser error is different from a valid file that produces poor spawn locations.
- Save with the same filename and extension. Do not let the editor append
.txtor convert the encoding unexpectedly. - Upload or save the file, then start the server. Watch the startup console for configuration errors before joining.
There is no universal coordinate example to paste safely because the attribute names and nesting must match the file generated for your server version. Copying a complete existing point is more reliable than using a snippet from an unrelated guide.

What the generation parameters do
Each section separates the locations from the rules used to turn them into valid spawn positions.
spawn_params
This block contains distance rules used while validating a candidate location. Community descriptions associate these rules with minimum distances from infected, other players, and static objects. The exact defaults and accepted attributes can vary with the game build, so adjust one rule at a time and retain the original values for rollback.
generator_params
This block controls how the area around a position is searched. The vanilla-style layout includes a grid-density setting and steepness bounds. Higher sampling density can provide more opportunities to find a valid spot but may increase generation work; narrow steepness limits can reject terrain that would otherwise be usable. Change these values only after confirming that your coordinates themselves are valid.
generator_posbubbles
This is the list of centres from which the generator samples. Deleting a default entry removes that area from consideration; adding a correctly formed entry makes another area available. The game can still reject an area if it violates the distance, terrain, object, or collision rules in the other parameter blocks.

Manual editing gives precise control but requires you to obtain and format coordinates. The web-based DayZ Spawnpoint Editor at dzpage.com provides a visual alternative: it lets you drag points over satellite maps for Chernarus, Livonia, or Sakhal, export a cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xml file, and import an existing file for adjustment.

- Open the editor and choose the map that matches the server.
- Import your current XML before making changes if you want to preserve existing points.
- Move, delete, or add points on the satellite map.
- Export the XML.
- Compare the exported file’s section and element structure with the server’s original. Keep the server’s backup and do not assume an export is compatible with every future game version.
- Upload the verified file while the server is stopped, then restart and test.

Test the change in-game
A server can start successfully while still producing undesirable locations. Test the behavior rather than relying only on a clean console.
- Join after the restart with a character that will receive a fresh spawn. A character already alive in the world will not necessarily be relocated by editing the file.
- Record the actual landing area and compare it with the intended bubble. Remember that the result can be near, not exactly on, the centre coordinate.
- Repeat the test several times if possible. One successful spawn does not prove that every point is valid.
- Check that the survivor is on solid, walkable ground and not inside an object, under terrain, in water, or trapped behind a locked collision.
- Review the server log for XML parse errors, rejected positions, or repeated spawn-generation failures.
- If a point fails consistently, remove it or move the centre to a larger clear area before changing global parameters.
No dated 2026 reference confirms that every current game build handles these settings identically. Keep your test results tied to the exact map, server version, and host configuration you run.
Troubleshoot common failures

When to edit hop and travel
For a normal community server with ordinary fresh characters, leave hop and travel untouched. Edit them only when you operate a connected setup in which a player can move between servers on the same map or arrive from another map, and when your server documentation confirms that those flows are enabled.
If you do edit them, use the same controlled process as for fresh: back up first, change one section, preserve its existing element structure, restart, and test the corresponding transfer scenario. A successful fresh-spawn test says nothing about hop or travel.
Practical design choices for a custom spawn layout
Scattered survival starts
Use multiple bubbles separated across the playable region. This reduces the chance that every new survivor begins in one town and gives groups a broader opening experience. Keep each point on terrain with nearby roads or natural routes, but avoid placing all points beside high-value loot.
Town-focused starts
Place centres around the outskirts of selected towns rather than inside buildings. Outskirts give the generator more open ground and let you control how quickly a new survivor reaches the settlement.
Event or training servers
A tightly grouped set of points can make sense for an event, but test object density and collision carefully. A compact layout also increases the chance that players meet immediately, so document that choice for your community.
Fairness and repeatability
Do not use a single hidden point as the only valid location. Terrain changes, updates, or object placement can invalidate it. Several tested bubbles provide resilience when one candidate is rejected.
Provider-specific workflow notes
Hosting panels use different names for the same operations. Nitrado’s published workflow is to stop the server, gather coordinates, edit cfgPlayerSpawnPoints.xml, remove unwanted defaults in generator_posbubbles, add custom points, and restart. BisectHosting also publishes a guide for changing DayZ player spawn points. These guides can help you locate the file in their panels, but the XML structure in your actual profile remains authoritative.
On a self-managed server, the equivalent process is the same: stop the DayZ process, back up the active profile file, edit it with a plain-text/XML-aware editor, validate it, then start the process and inspect logs. Do not edit a copy in a local download and forget to upload it to the profile the running instance actually uses.
