Paper’s configuration is edited on the server, not in the Minecraft client. The file you need depends on the scope of the change: config/paper-global.yml controls server-wide behavior, config/paper-world-defaults.yml supplies defaults for worlds, and each world can have its own paper-world.yml for exceptions.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The safest workflow is to identify the active Paper directory, make a backup, change only the required YAML lines, check indentation, then start the server and test the affected world. Paper’s documented inheritance rules and the exact world-folder layout matter more than the filename alone.

Which Paper file should you edit?
Paper separates settings by scope. Choosing the wrong file can make a change affect every world when you intended to change one, or appear to do nothing because another file supplies an override.
| File | Scope | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
config/paper-global.yml |
Entire server | Behavior that should be the same across all worlds. |
config/paper-world-defaults.yml |
Default for worlds | A setting that should apply to worlds unless that world has its own value. |
paper-world.yml inside a world directory |
One world | An exception or custom value for that specific world. |
Paper stores its default world values in paper-world-defaults.yml. It does not create per-world option overrides out of the box; a world’s file normally contains only an internal _version entry. A setting copied into a world’s paper-world.yml becomes that world’s explicit value.

Find the correct server directory
Paper configuration files are inside the directory from which the Paper server runs. This is usually the folder containing the server JAR, world folders, logs and the config directory. If you administer several servers, confirm the running instance before editing: a perfectly valid change in an unused directory has no effect on the live server.
- Stop or otherwise take the server out of service before changing files. This conservative approach prevents a running process from rewriting a file while you edit it.
- Open the server’s
configdirectory and look forpaper-global.ymlandpaper-world-defaults.yml. - List the world directories and inspect their contents for
paper-world.yml. Do not assume that a path copied from another installation matches yours. - Record the Paper version and the world name before editing. Setting names and folder layouts can vary between versions, while the file-scope rules remain the same.
Back up before making a change
A backup is a practical safeguard rather than a Paper feature. Copy the file you will edit to a separate location, retaining the original filename and extension. If you are changing a global file, back up that file; if you are changing a world override, back up the world’s file as well. For a high-value server, take a complete server backup so that a configuration error can be reverted together with any related world changes.

Keep the backup outside the directory that Paper loads automatically, or give it a name that Paper will not treat as an active configuration file. A backup should be restorable by copying the original file back after the server is stopped.
Edit a server-wide setting
Use config/paper-global.yml when the behavior must apply to the whole Paper instance. Open it with a plain-text editor that preserves UTF-8 text and whitespace. Locate the documented option, change its value, and leave unrelated sections untouched.
- Open
config/paper-global.yml. - Find the exact option name in the Paper configuration reference for your installed version.
- Change only that option’s value. Preserve the existing indentation and the surrounding key hierarchy.
- Save the file without changing its extension.
- Start the server using your normal Paper command and watch the console for configuration or YAML parsing errors.
- Test the behavior in a representative world before allowing players to rely on it.
The supplied Paper documentation identifies this file as server-wide. It does not establish a universal rule that every option is hot-reloaded, nor does it confirm a single restart requirement for all releases. Treat a controlled stop, edit and start as the predictable procedure, and verify the result rather than assuming that saving the file immediately changed a running process.
Change the default for worlds
Edit config/paper-world-defaults.yml when you want a value to be the default across worlds that do not have a manual override for that option. This file is not a list of one world’s settings; it is the baseline used by eligible worlds.

- Open
config/paper-world-defaults.yml. - Find the option in the same section used by the installed Paper version.
- Change only the required value and preserve the YAML structure.
- Save the file, start the server, and test more than one affected world if the setting is important.
Do not assume that changing the defaults file forcibly replaces every value already written in a world file. Paper’s official configuration description says defaults apply to worlds without overrides. An older third-party explanation says a changed default will not affect a world whose paper-world.yml already exists. Those statements conflict, and the available evidence does not resolve every version and file-state combination. The reliable operational answer is to inspect the target world file and test the exact Paper build you run.
Override a setting in one world
Per-world changes belong in that world’s paper-world.yml. The official guidance is to copy only the lines you want to change from paper-world-defaults.yml; do not copy the entire defaults file. A small override is easier to audit and reduces the chance of unintentionally pinning many unrelated values.
- Open
config/paper-world-defaults.ymland locate the option you need. - Copy the option and the minimum parent sections required to preserve its indentation hierarchy.
- Open the target world’s
paper-world.yml. If it contains only_version, add the copied setting below it using the same indentation as the source. - Save the world file. Leave settings you do not intend to override out of it.
- Start the server and test that world specifically. If the setting is meant to differ from other worlds, test one unchanged world as a control.
For example, a change intended only for a mining world should be placed in that world’s file, not in the global file and not automatically in the defaults file. Conversely, putting a value in the defaults file is appropriate when new or otherwise uncustomized worlds should inherit it.
Locate the world file when the path is different
Paper’s world layout can include dimension folders. The commonly documented overworld path is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesworld/dimensions/minecraft/overworld/paper-world.yml
The End is shown as:
world/dimensions/minecraft/the_end/paper-world.yml
Some third-party guides instead show the overworld file as world/paper-world.yml. That difference is why you should inspect the actual directory tree on your server rather than blindly creating a file at a path copied from another guide. Use the world that is loaded by your Paper installation, and confirm the file’s location before editing it.

YAML rules that prevent common failures
Paper reads these files as YAML. The value can be correct while the file still fails to load because the structure is malformed.
- Preserve indentation exactly. YAML hierarchy is represented by indentation, so moving a line left or right can change its meaning.
- Use spaces consistently and avoid tabs for indentation.
- Keep a setting under the same parent sections shown in the Paper-generated file.
- Do not add JSON punctuation, Markdown formatting or shell commands to the YAML file.
- Change one logical setting at a time when troubleshooting; this makes it clear which edit caused a problem.
- Retain comments and unrelated options unless you have a reason to remove them.
If your editor offers automatic formatting, disable transformations that reorder keys or convert indentation. A plain-text editor with visible whitespace can make accidental indentation changes easier to spot.
Understand inheritance and conflicts
Think of the files as layers rather than interchangeable copies:
paper-global.ymlsupplies settings whose scope is the whole server.paper-world-defaults.ymlsupplies baseline values for world-level settings.- A value in a world’s
paper-world.ymlis an explicit per-world choice for that option.
When deciding where to put a value, ask whether it is a server policy, a default shared by most worlds, or an exception for one world. If you later want a world to follow the default again, remove that option from the world’s override file rather than copying the entire defaults file into it. Because documentation and older guides disagree about how an existing world file interacts with changed defaults, verify the resulting behavior after removing or adding an override.
Apply and verify the change
The available Paper reference does not confirm a universal reload or restart rule for every configuration key and Paper version. Plan for a full stop and start, then verify from the server’s behavior. Do not rely only on the fact that the editor saved successfully.

- Start Paper with the command used by your service, panel or launch script.
- Read the startup console for YAML parsing errors, unknown sections or other configuration warnings.
- Join the target world and exercise the behavior affected by the setting.
- If the value is a default, compare a world with no explicit override. If it is a per-world setting, compare the target world with a control world.
- Record the file changed, the Paper version, the test result and any rollback performed.
Testing on the target server is especially important when a world already has a paper-world.yml, when the directory layout is unusual, or when you are moving a configuration between Paper versions.

Troubleshoot “paper.yml not found”
Modern Paper configuration is split into the files under config and each world’s paper-world.yml. A guide that tells you to edit a single legacy paper.yml may describe a different Paper generation or another server implementation.
- Check the server’s
configdirectory forpaper-global.ymlandpaper-world-defaults.yml. - Check the loaded world directory for
paper-world.yml. - Confirm that you are looking at the directory used by the running Paper process.
- Use the configuration reference matching your Paper version before searching for a key name.
Do not create a legacy-looking paper.yml simply because a tutorial mentions it. The documented files above are the relevant locations for the current split configuration model described here.
Troubleshoot a change that has no effect
The wrong scope was edited
A server-wide file cannot be replaced by a per-world edit, and a per-world edit will not affect another world. Recheck the intended scope against the file table and test the world named in your procedure.
Recommended Free Tools
An override is taking precedence
Inspect the target world’s paper-world.yml. If the option is already present there, changing the defaults file may not produce the result you expect. Test after deliberately removing or changing that one override, keeping a backup so you can restore it.
The wrong folder was edited
Compare the path with the directory tree used by the live server. Pay particular attention to dimension folders such as dimensions/minecraft/overworld and dimensions/minecraft/the_end.
The process has not re-read the file
Saving a file does not prove that the running process loaded it. Use the controlled stop-and-start workflow and inspect startup output. The exact reload behavior is not established for all Paper settings.
Best Value

- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
The option name belongs to another version
Paper configuration keys can change between versions. Use the reference for the installed build and copy the option’s spelling and hierarchy exactly; do not infer a key from a similarly named setting in an older guide.

Troubleshoot a startup failure after editing
If Paper reports a YAML or configuration error after the edit, stop making additional changes and restore the backup if the server must return online quickly. Then compare the edited file with the original line by line.
- Check indentation around the changed section.
- Check that the value uses the type expected by the version-specific documentation.
- Check for accidental tabs, missing punctuation where YAML requires it, or characters introduced by the editor.
- Confirm that the copied per-world lines retain the same parent hierarchy as in
paper-world-defaults.yml. - Restart with the smallest corrected change, then test before applying another option.
Keep the failed file separately for diagnosis, but do not leave multiple candidate files in the active configuration directory where Paper could load the wrong one.
A repeatable editing checklist
- Identify the live Paper server directory and version.
- Decide whether the setting is global, a world default, or a single-world override.
- Back up every file you will touch.
- Use the exact option name and hierarchy documented for that Paper version.
- For a per-world change, copy only the required lines from
paper-world-defaults.yml. - Verify the real world path, including dimension directories.
- Preserve YAML indentation and save as plain text.
- Start the server in a controlled way and read the console.
- Test the target world and, where useful, an unchanged comparison world.
- Roll back from the backup if parsing fails or the behavior is not what you intended.
What the file layout means in practice
Suppose a server has a survival overworld, an End dimension and a separate creative world. A global option belongs in config/paper-global.yml if all three should share it. A world-level performance or gameplay default belongs in config/paper-world-defaults.yml if uncustomized worlds should inherit it. A special rule for only the creative world belongs in that world’s paper-world.yml, with only the changed option copied from the defaults file.
This arrangement keeps the intended policy visible: global policy in one file, shared world defaults in another, and exceptions next to the world they affect. It also makes later upgrades and troubleshooting easier because a per-world file contains deliberate deviations instead of a second, unmaintained copy of every default.
Limits of the available documentation
The file-scope rules and the instruction to copy only selected lines are documented by Paper. The exact option names, their valid values and their behavior are version-specific and must be checked against the reference for the Paper build you run. No universal restart requirement was confirmed, and no published statistic is established for how quickly or reliably configuration edits take effect. When sources disagree about an existing world file and changed defaults, use the official rule as the starting point and verify it on the target server.
