To edit bukkit.yml, stop the Minecraft server, open the file in the server root (or your host’s Files tab), make the YAML change, save it, and start the server again. Editing while the server is running can be overwritten when it saves its configuration. Paper’s current reference is the best authority for the keys and defaults supported by your Paper version: Paper bukkit.yml reference.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The file is mainly useful for global Bukkit/Paper behavior such as mob spawn limits and chunk garbage-collection timing. The exact effect can vary by server software and version, and Paper world configuration can override some global values. Treat performance changes as controlled experiments: change one setting, restart, observe, and keep a rollback copy.

bukkit.yml is a YAML configuration file read during server startup. It sits alongside the server JAR and the main server folders in a normal self-hosted installation. On a managed host, the same file is usually exposed through the panel’s file manager. Values in this file can affect spawning and chunk handling across the server, while more specific Paper world configuration may take precedence for a particular world.
This is not a live console command. A saved edit does not become active until the server reads the file during startup, so plan a restart for every change. Keep a copy of the original file before changing anything; it gives you a quick way to undo a mistake or compare behavior.

Before you open the file
Use a maintenance window
Stop the server cleanly before editing. Tell players when it will be unavailable, and wait for the process to finish rather than closing the terminal or panel abruptly. A clean stop reduces the chance of world data or configuration changes being left incomplete.
Prepare a rollback
- Download or copy the existing
bukkit.ymlwith its current date in the filename. - Record the server software and version shown by your host or startup command. Configuration keys and their interpretation can change between versions.
- Write down the value you are changing and why. This makes it possible to identify the change that helped or caused a problem.
- Have console or panel access available so you can stop the server again if startup reports an error.
Choose a suitable editor
Use a plain-text editor that preserves spaces and line breaks. Do not use a word processor. YAML relies on indentation; tabs, accidental quotation marks, or a missing colon can make the file invalid. If your host offers an in-browser editor, its Save button is normally sufficient, but still make a backup first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Hosted Minecraft panel
- Open the server control panel.
- Click Stop and wait until the status shows that the server is offline.
- Open the panel’s Files, File Manager, or similarly named area.
- Open the server’s top-level directory. Look for
bukkit.ymlbeside the server JAR and folders such asworld, plugins, andlogs. - Select the file and choose Edit. If the panel only provides download and upload, download the file, edit it locally, then upload the replacement while the server remains stopped.
XGamingServer describes this stop-then-edit workflow for hosted panels and places the file in the server’s Files tab: How to configure bukkit.yml.

Self-hosted server
- Open the terminal or service manager used to run the server.
- Issue the server’s normal stop command and wait for the process to exit.
- Open the directory from which the server JAR is launched. This is the server root, not the
worldorpluginssubdirectory. - Open
bukkit.ymlin a plain-text editor, or edit it over SSH with an editor such asnanoorvim.
If you cannot see the file, check that you are in the same directory used by the startup script and that hidden-file filtering is not concealing it. A newly created server may generate configuration files only after its first successful start. Do not create a second copy in a world folder: the server will read the root-level file.
Safe editing procedure
- Stop the server. Confirm that the panel reports Offline or that the server process has exited.
- Make a backup. Copy
bukkit.ymlto a dated backup location before changing a character. - Open the root-level file. Verify the filename is exactly
bukkit.yml, notbukkit.yml.txt. - Find the key. Use your editor’s search function. Preserve the existing hierarchy and indentation.
- Change only the intended value. Keep the key name, colon, and indentation intact. YAML comments begin with
#; leave comments in place when they explain a version-specific option. - Save as plain text. Do not let an editor add a second extension or convert the file into a rich-text format.
- Start the server. Use the panel’s Start button or the same command used before the edit. The new value is read during this startup.
- Watch the console. Let startup complete and check for configuration or YAML parsing errors before allowing players to return.
- Test one change. Observe the relevant mob behavior or performance for a meaningful period, then keep, refine, or restore the backup.
Paper spawn-limit settings
Paper’s bukkit.yml reference lists these default limits: monsters 70, animals 10, water-animals 5, water-ambient 20, water-underground-creature 5, axolotls 5, and ambient 15. These are Paper defaults, not universal values for every Bukkit-derived server. See the complete reference at docs.papermc.io/paper/reference/bukkit-configuration/.
| Key | Paper default | What the category represents | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
monsters |
70 | Hostile monster spawning | Applies to naturally spawning mobs around players, subject to the server’s other spawning rules. |
animals |
10 | Land animals | Changing this does not set a hard limit on every animal created by every mechanism. |
water-animals |
5 | Water animals | Use the category that matches the mobs you are trying to affect. |
water-ambient |
20 | Ambient water creatures | It is separate from water animals and water-underground creatures. |
water-underground-creature |
5 | Underground water creatures | Paper identifies this as its own spawn category. |
axolotls |
5 | Axolotl spawning | Paper lists axolotls separately from the broader water categories. |
ambient |
15 | Ambient creatures such as bats | This is a separate category from monsters and animals. |
What a spawn limit actually counts
CraftServe explains that these limits concern mobs spawning around players. Mobs in distant, unloaded areas are not counted because they are not active around a player. The limits also do not govern every mob produced by a spawner or by a command; those mechanisms have independent behavior and limits. Consequently, lowering monsters will not automatically remove a large command-created farm or a room full of spawner mobs. See CraftServe’s bukkit.yml guide for this scope distinction.

World-specific overrides
Paper’s documentation notes that spawn limits can be overridden in Paper’s world configuration. If a value in bukkit.yml appears to have no effect in one world, inspect that world’s Paper configuration and compare the effective value with the global setting. Do not assume that a global edit wins over a more specific world setting.
How to change spawn limits without guessing
- Choose the symptom you are addressing: too many naturally spawning hostile mobs, excessive passive animals, or a particular water category.
- Identify the matching key in the table instead of lowering every category.
- Copy the current value into your change log. For example, record that
monsterswas 70 before testing; 70 is the Paper default documented by Paper, not a recommendation for every server. - Change one category at a time to a conservative test value selected for your server’s player count and gameplay goals. Community guides propose different numbers, and no single recommended replacement is authoritative.
- Restart the server and test under the same conditions that produced the problem. Check both performance and whether normal farms still function.
- If the result is worse, stop the server and restore the backup or the previous number. If the result is useful, document it before testing another key.
Reducing a cap can lower the amount of naturally spawned entities competing for server time, but it can also make hostile-mob farms slower and change the feel of survival gameplay. A cap change is therefore a trade-off, not a guaranteed lag fix.
Understanding chunk-gc
The chunk-gc section is easy to misread because published explanations are not identical. Paper’s documentation describes period-in-ticks as the duration that plugin-loaded chunks should remain loaded, with a default of 600 ticks and a minimum of 20 ticks (one second). CraftServe describes the setting instead as the interval between checks for unused chunks in memory and says that 0 disables chunk garbage collection. XGamingServer says this setting generally should not need to be changed. Consult the documentation for the exact server version before altering it.

| Source | Interpretation or value | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
| Paper documentation | period-in-ticks defaults to 600; Paper caps the minimum at 20 ticks. |
Use this as the primary reference for a Paper server and confirm the option name in your version. |
| CraftServe guide | Describes an interval for checking unused chunks and states that 0 disables chunk garbage collection. | Treat this as a version- or implementation-sensitive explanation, not a universal definition. |
| XGamingServer guide | Advises that the setting generally does not need to be changed. | Leave it at its documented default unless you have a measured reason and a rollback plan. |
Ticks are the server’s timing unit; Paper’s minimum of 20 ticks is identified as one second. Do not convert 600 ticks into a promise about real-world performance: actual behavior depends on server load, plugins, and the implementation in your version.
A cautious chunk-gc workflow
- Record the exact server software and version.
- Read that version’s bukkit.yml reference and identify whether the option is expressed as a period, a check interval, or another implementation detail.
- Measure the problem first. Note when chunks remain loaded, which plugin loads them, and whether memory or tick time actually changes.
- Change only the relevant value, never several memory-related settings at once.
- Restart, reproduce the workload, and compare the result with your recorded baseline.
- Restore the backup if plugin behavior, redstone machines, teleport destinations, or memory usage becomes less reliable.
Restarting and verifying the edit
After saving, start the server through the same panel or command you normally use. Wait for the normal startup sequence to finish. A server that starts successfully has accepted the file syntactically, but that does not prove the setting is effective in every world.
- For spawn changes, test natural spawning near an active player rather than relying on a spawner or a command-created mob.
- Check the world where the problem occurred; a Paper world override can make another world behave differently.
- For chunk-gc changes, reproduce the plugin action that loads chunks and watch whether the observed behavior changes.
- Keep the old file until you have completed the test. A backup is most useful before the next unrelated configuration edit.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| The server reports a YAML or configuration error during startup. | Indentation, a missing colon, an invalid value, or an accidental editor-format change. | Stop the server, restore the last known-good backup, and reapply only the intended edit with spaces preserved. |
| The server starts but behavior is unchanged. | The file was edited in the wrong directory, the server was not restarted after saving, or a world-specific Paper value overrides it. | Confirm the launch directory, verify the timestamp and contents of the root-level file, restart, and inspect the relevant world configuration. |
| A spawn limit does not affect a farm. | The entities come from a spawner or command rather than natural spawning, or they are outside the player-centered spawning scope. | Test natural spawning near a player and investigate the farm’s creation mechanism separately. |
| Only one world ignores the global value. | Paper world configuration supplies a more specific override. | Compare that world’s setting with the global bukkit.yml value and change the more specific configuration if appropriate. |
| The panel cannot save the file. | The server is still running, the file is read-only, or the panel requires download-and-upload editing. | Stop the server, check permissions, or download, edit, and upload the file while it is offline. |
| Changing chunk-gc produces unexpected plugin behavior. | The option’s meaning differs between documentation and versions, or a plugin depends on a particular loading lifetime. | Restore the previous value and consult the documentation for the exact server version before another test. |
Operational practices that prevent repeat problems
Change one variable per restart
Editing several spawn categories and chunk settings together makes the result impossible to attribute. One key per maintenance cycle gives you a clear cause-and-effect record and a simple rollback.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Keep configuration history
Store dated copies outside the live server directory. Include the server version, the key changed, the previous value, the new value, and the observed result. This is especially important when upgrading Paper, because defaults and precedence rules are version-sensitive.

Paper’s reference lists the defaults for the spawn categories and the documented chunk-gc period. Start from those values unless your existing configuration intentionally differs. Avoid copying a number from an unrelated server: player count, plugin load, world design, and gameplay expectations all change the outcome.
Separate lag diagnosis from configuration edits
A spawn cap can affect naturally spawned entities, but it cannot explain every form of lag. Spawner farms, command-created mobs, plugins that load chunks, and world-specific overrides require different checks. Use the narrowest setting that matches the observed mechanism, and undo it if the test does not improve the measured problem.
Quick Recap
Quick reference
| Task | Action |
|---|---|
| Locate the file on a host | Stop the server, open the panel’s Files or File Manager area, and select the root-level bukkit.yml. |
| Locate the file on a self-run server | Stop the process and open bukkit.yml in the directory from which the server JAR is launched. |
| Apply an edit | Save valid YAML, then start the server so it reads the file. |
| Check natural mob limits | Use the matching spawn-limits category and remember that Paper world settings may override it. |
| Approach chunk-gc | Verify the exact version’s documentation first; Paper documents 600 ticks by default and a 20-tick minimum, while other guides describe the setting differently. |
| Undo a bad change | Stop the server and replace the live file with your dated backup, then restart. |
