In His Own Image is Valor Mortis’s hardest trophy overall because it requires completing the entire game. The most demanding combat work behind that completion is consistent parrying, breaking enemy posture for Critical Attacks, adapting your equipment to each boss, and preserving the scarce materials needed for the missable Abyssal Eviction. Once the full arsenal is available, Jackknife is best treated as a deliberate cleanup run rather than an early-game challenge.
Valor Mortis has 39 trophies: one platinum, three gold, 14 silver and 21 bronze. PowerPyx rates the set at approximately 5/10 difficulty and estimates 15–25 hours for the platinum. There are no difficulty options and no online trophies, so your route and combat habits matter more than selecting an easier mode.

Which Valor Mortis trophies are actually the hardest?
The trophy list mixes story progression, combat execution, equipment preparation and exploration. “Hardest” depends on the kind of failure you find most costly: a long campaign, a narrow timing window, a scarce upgrade resource or a no-death cleanup attempt.
| Trophy or group | Why it is difficult | Best time to pursue it | Failure or missability |
|---|---|---|---|
| In His Own Image | Requires completing the game, making it the broadest test of combat consistency and progression. | Throughout the story; it unlocks on completion. | Not a one-encounter stunt, but every difficult fight contributes to the risk. |
| Abyssal Eviction | Requires Shield Transmutation at level 5 and depends on two maximum-level upgrade materials. | Plan for it before spending either scarce material elsewhere. | Missable. Only two maximum-level materials are available. |
| Jackknife | Requires damage with every melee weapon, firearm and Transmutation without dying. | After the complete arsenal is unlocked, during a controlled cleanup attempt. | A death breaks the attempt; do not combine it with risky exploration. |
| Story boss trophies | Each requires winning a major encounter while learning that boss’s attack rhythm and counterplay. | When the story presents each boss; ordinary areas remain useful for practice. | Generally cleanup-friendly because prior areas can be revisited. |
PowerPyx identifies In His Own Image as the hardest trophy overall. That does not mean it has a unique button sequence. It is difficult because the game asks you to repeat the combat fundamentals across the whole campaign while managing upgrades, equipment and deaths.

Learn the combat loop before attempting hard bosses
Parry until posture breaks
The central answer to difficult encounters is not simply dealing damage faster. Parry incoming attacks until the enemy’s posture breaks, then use the resulting Critical Attack window. A successful parry both avoids the immediate hit and advances the state that creates your largest damage opportunity.
Use regular enemies as timing practice. Watch the opponent’s attack rather than reacting to your own animation, and resist the urge to spend every opening on a normal strike. Your practice goal is a repeatable sequence: identify the attack, parry it, confirm the posture break, then take the Critical Attack. That sequence is the foundation for surviving the campaign and for shortening boss attempts.
Separate parriable and unparriable attacks
At least one showcased ranged attack cannot be parried. When an attack is not parriable, forcing the same response only trades health for a failed timing attempt. Create space, dodge or reposition instead. A useful mental rule is to reserve parries for attacks you have confirmed can be parried and use movement for projectiles or other explicitly unparriable threats.
Use targeting and assistance deliberately
Target Lock can keep your attacks aligned with a moving enemy. If attacks regularly miss, enable or use Combat Assist as suggested in the combat guidance. These options do not replace timing; they reduce avoidable misses so that your attention stays on the parry, posture and Critical Attack cycle.
Remember how healing works
Xbox’s launch tips state that melee strikes restore health, while Ferrofluid Flasks no longer heal. That changes the safest response to a damaged character: accurate melee pressure is part of recovery. Backing away indefinitely can leave you unable to restore health, while reckless attacks can get you hit. Look for a confirmed opening, land controlled melee strikes, and disengage before the next attack pattern becomes unsafe.

Spend Catalysts on durable advantages
For difficult fights, the combat guide recommends prioritising Maximum Health and Melee Damage with Catalysts. Maximum Health gives you more room to learn an unfamiliar boss, while Melee Damage improves the value of openings and the health returned by successful melee pressure. Do not assume that a temporary change in damage type will solve every stall; first make sure your basic survivability and close-range output are strong enough to exploit posture breaks.
Prepare a boss attempt instead of repeating a failed plan
Identify what is failing
After a failed attempt, name the failure before changing anything. If you are being hit while trying to answer attacks, work on parry recognition or switch to dodging for an unparriable move. If you survive but the fight never progresses, you may be missing posture breaks or failing to reach Critical Attacks. If the boss’s health barely moves, change the loadout rather than repeating the same sequence.

Xbox’s official launch guidance recommends trying different Transmutations, firearm combinations and inventory items when a strategy stalls. Treat equipment as a counterplay toolkit, not a permanent loadout. Keep one setup for learning the boss’s rhythm and another for exploiting the openings you have confirmed. Make one meaningful change at a time so you can tell whether it solved the problem.
Keep the arena readable
Target Lock is useful when a boss moves laterally, but disengage or reposition when a projectile or other unparriable attack is coming. A clean arena position gives you the choice between a parry and a dodge; being trapped against scenery removes that choice. Enter each attempt with enough space to retreat, then return to melee range when a safe opening appears.
Follow the story boss route while building skill
Boss trophies follow the story route. The roadmap identifies General Lothaire as the first main boss, The Iron Marshall as the second and the Sphinx as the third; later chapters continue the same progression structure. The names establish when to expect the major checks, but they do not justify using one fixed strategy for every encounter. Every major boss has a strategy that works best against it, as One More Level’s launch tips said in guidance published by Xbox Wire on October 13, 2026.

General Lothaire: establish your timing routine
Use the first main boss to validate your combat loop. Practice recognising the attack that can be parried, build posture damage rather than swinging without a plan, and take the Critical Attack as soon as the break occurs. If your attempts end with missed strikes, use Target Lock or Combat Assist. The objective is to leave this fight with a reliable process, not merely a single lucky win.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The Iron Marshall: change the setup if the first plan stalls
By the second main boss, you should have enough experience to distinguish a timing problem from a loadout problem. If parries are working but the encounter is too slow or unsafe, change your Transmutation, firearm combination or inventory items. Keep melee damage high enough to make each posture break meaningful, and use melee openings to recover health under the game’s healing rules.
The Sphinx and later chapters: preserve resources and read exceptions
Against the third boss and later encounters, avoid spending every scarce material simply to force a single fight. Continue prioritising Maximum Health and Melee Damage when Catalysts are available, but protect the two maximum-level materials required for Shield Transmutation level 5. Learn whether a dangerous ranged move is unparriable before committing to a parry exchange, and plan movement around that knowledge.
Secure the missable Abyssal Eviction trophy
What the trophy requires
Abyssal Eviction requires Shield Transmutation upgraded to level 5. It is the list’s critical planning exception because only two maximum-level upgrade materials are available. Once both have been spent on other upgrades, the trophy cannot be guaranteed on that playthrough.
How to protect the materials
- Record the Shield Transmutation level-5 requirement before you begin spending maximum-level materials.
- When a maximum-level material becomes available, verify that it is one of the two needed for the level-5 upgrade before using it.
- Do not spend either material on a different upgrade until Shield Transmutation has reached level 5.
- After the upgrade is complete, confirm the trophy notification before treating the requirement as finished.
This is a resource-management trophy, not a test of defeating a particular boss. You can still practise combat and explore normally, but every material decision should preserve the level-5 path. Keep the requirement visible in your checklist so a late-game upgrade decision does not erase it.

Plan the Jackknife cleanup run
Unlock the complete arsenal first
Jackknife requires dealing damage with every melee weapon, firearm and Transmutation without dying. The efficient time to attempt it is after the full arsenal is available. Starting too early creates unnecessary backtracking and forces you to repeat the sequence when a newly obtained item becomes available later.
Use a controlled encounter
Choose an encounter you can control rather than a dangerous boss attempt. The trophy asks for damage, not a specific finishing blow, so you can cycle through the required categories methodically. Keep a written checklist of every melee weapon, firearm and Transmutation, and mark an item only after it has visibly damaged an enemy.
Protect the no-death condition
Do not combine Jackknife with unexplored areas, collectible hunting or an encounter whose attacks you are still learning. If an enemy begins an attack you cannot parry, create distance or reposition instead of gambling the run. Target Lock can help prevent a weapon from missing, and Combat Assist is appropriate if alignment is a recurring problem.
- Enter a familiar area with the complete arsenal equipped or readily accessible.
- Choose an enemy whose attacks and health you understand.
- Apply damage with each melee weapon, confirming contact before switching.
- Cycle through every firearm and confirm a hit for each one.
- Use every Transmutation and confirm damage from each.
- Finish the encounter alive, then verify the trophy notification.
If you die before completion, restart the checklist rather than assuming the game retained partial progress. The requirement is designed for a single controlled sequence, so a clean reset is safer than trying to infer which item registered.

Use post-game access for ordinary cleanup
Most areas remain accessible after the final boss. The roadmap also says there is no level-select requirement for general cleanup and that prior areas can be revisited. This makes the campaign completion trophy and the missable Shield Transmutation trophy the two planning priorities; ordinary boss and exploration trophies can usually wait.
Best Value
What to clean up after the final boss
- Return to earlier areas for trophies tied to exploration and side content.
- Collect remaining Ambers and other missed pickups while using your completed combat build.
- Finish story boss trophies that did not register during the first clear.
- Attempt Jackknife only after the arsenal is complete and you can control the encounter.
What not to postpone
Do not postpone the Shield Transmutation level-5 decision. Revisitability helps with ordinary cleanup, but it does not create additional maximum-level materials. If you finish the story without preserving the two materials, Abyssal Eviction may require another playthrough.
A practical order for the hardest trophies
- Start parry practice immediately. Use regular enemies to learn which attacks can be parried and when a posture break produces a Critical Attack.
- Build durable stats. Prioritise Maximum Health and Melee Damage with Catalysts when preparing for difficult fights.
- Track the two maximum-level materials. Reserve them for Shield Transmutation level 5 and secure Abyssal Eviction before spending them elsewhere.
- Adapt at every boss. If a fight stalls, change Transmutations, firearms or inventory items instead of repeating an ineffective setup.
- Complete the campaign. In His Own Image unlocks with game completion and represents the broadest execution test.
- Finish the arsenal. Wait until every melee weapon, firearm and Transmutation is available.
- Run Jackknife safely. Cycle through all categories in a familiar encounter and avoid unnecessary deaths.
- Revisit previous areas. Use post-game access for remaining trophies, Ambers and side content.
Troubleshooting difficult combat attempts
“My parries are inconsistent.”
Stop trying to parry every visual effect. Confirm the attack’s timing against regular enemies first, then use the same cue on the boss. For an attack identified as unparriable, switch to a dodge or reposition rather than widening the timing window you are trying to learn.
“I parry successfully but still deal too little damage.”
A parry is preparation for a posture break, not the end of the sequence. Continue building posture until the break occurs, then take the Critical Attack window. If the resulting openings remain weak, raise Melee Damage with Catalysts or change the equipment setup.
“I keep running out of health.”
Ferrofluid Flasks no longer heal, so passive retreat is not a recovery plan. Look for safe melee openings, restore health through accurate strikes, and leave the range of an incoming unparriable attack before re-engaging.
“The boss counter I use never works.”
Follow the launch guidance to test a different Transmutation, firearm combination or inventory item. Also check whether the attack you are answering can actually be parried. A loadout change cannot fix a response that the encounter does not permit.
“I missed Abyssal Eviction.”
Check whether both maximum-level materials were already spent elsewhere. Because only two are available, the level-5 Shield Transmutation requirement cannot be repaired by ordinary post-game revisits if the resources are gone. Preserve them on a new run and make the upgrade before other maximum-level spending.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Parry regular enemies until posture breaks and Critical Attacks are reliable.
- Use Target Lock or Combat Assist when attacks miss because of alignment.
- Dodge or reposition against attacks that cannot be parried.
- Use accurate melee strikes for healing because Ferrofluid Flasks no longer heal.
- Prioritise Maximum Health and Melee Damage with Catalysts.
- Reserve both maximum-level materials for Shield Transmutation level 5.
- Complete the story for In His Own Image.
- Unlock the full arsenal before starting Jackknife.
- Attempt Jackknife in a familiar encounter and do not die.
- Use post-game area access for ordinary exploration and side-content cleanup.
