How to Deploy a Vibe-Coded App to Production With a Custom Domain

Move a vibe-coded app safely from a preview URL to production: configure environment variables, test a preview deployment, promote the verified build, connect DNS and confirm HTTPS, redirects and monitoring.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A preview URL is not the same thing as a production release. The dependable path is: connect the project to a host, configure environment variables, run it locally, create a preview deployment, test the preview, deploy the verified build to production, attach your domain, then check DNS, HTTPS, redirects and monitoring from the public URL.

What “production” means for a vibe-coded app

A vibe-coded app is usually assembled with an AI coding tool, prompt-driven builder or generated starter project. That makes it possible to reach a working preview quickly, but the preview often uses temporary hosting, development credentials or test data. Production is the user-facing deployment that should remain available at your own domain and use explicitly chosen production services.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Do not treat “the page loads on my preview URL” as proof that the app is live. A production release must also prove that the build is repeatable, secrets are scoped correctly, server-side routes work on the host, forms and integrations reach the right services, and the domain serves the intended version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest release order is:

  1. Link the generated project to a hosting project.
  2. Set local and production environment variables.
  3. Run the app locally and fix build errors.
  4. Create an isolated preview deployment.
  5. Test the preview as a user and inspect deployment logs.
  6. Promote the known-good commit or artifact to production.
  7. Add the custom domain and apply the host’s DNS records.
  8. Verify HTTPS, redirects, canonical URLs and post-launch monitoring.

What you need before deploying

  • The generated project in a local directory, with its package manifest and build configuration intact.
  • Access to a hosting account and a project created for this app.
  • A domain registered with a registrar whose DNS settings you can edit.
  • Separate development, preview and production credentials for databases, authentication providers and third-party APIs where those services support environments.
  • A clear production build command and output configuration for the framework used by the app.
  • A source-control commit or other identifiable artifact that you can redeploy or roll back.

Keep the project’s deployment configuration in source control, but keep secret values out of committed files. A local .env.local file can be useful for development; it should be excluded by the project’s ignore rules and never uploaded as a public asset.

1. Connect the generated project to a hosting project

Vercel command-line workflow

Open a terminal in the project’s root directory and run:

vercel link

This associates the local directory with a Vercel project. Confirm that the selected team and project are the ones intended for this app. Linking the wrong project can send a preview or production deployment to an unrelated site, so check the project name in the command output and in the host dashboard before proceeding.

After linking, inspect the project settings for the framework preset, install command, build command, output directory and selected production branch. Generated projects sometimes contain settings from the builder that do not match the final framework; a successful local preview does not guarantee that the host will use the same commands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Netlify project connection

Netlify can connect a repository for continuous deploys or accept deployments from its CLI and other supported workflows. In the project settings, identify the production branch and the context used for Deploy Previews and branch deploys. Context-specific settings matter because a variable or build command that is correct for a preview may be wrong for production.

2. Configure environment variables without leaking secrets

Environment variables hold values that should change between local development, previews and production: API endpoints, database URLs, authentication settings, webhook secrets and private service keys. A variable being present is not enough; it must be present in the correct deployment environment and exposed only to code that is allowed to read it.

Pull values for local development

With a linked Vercel project, the documented command for bringing configured variables into a local file is:

vercel env pull .env.local

Review the resulting file before running the app. Check that the URL points to the intended development or test service and that no production-only secret has been copied into a shared machine or committed repository. If your framework distinguishes browser-visible variables from server-only variables, use its required public prefix only for values that are safe to expose to visitors. Private keys must stay in server-side code and server-side environment settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set production values deliberately

Configure production variables in the host’s project settings or supported CLI, API or configuration-file workflow. Vercel and Netlify both support environment-scoped configuration; use the Production scope for values needed by the live deployment rather than assuming a Preview value will be inherited.

  • Use the production database, callback URLs and API base URLs only after confirming the app is ready to write real data.
  • Register the final domain with authentication and payment providers before launch if they validate allowed origins or redirect URLs.
  • Check spelling, capitalization and required prefixes exactly. A variable named API_URL is not the same as API_BASE_URL.
  • After changing a variable, trigger a new deployment. Most build-time variables are captured when the deployment is built, so changing the setting does not retroactively alter an already deployed bundle.

Never paste private keys into client-side source, browser storage, screenshots or issue comments. A value that is bundled into JavaScript sent to the browser should be considered public, even if its name contains words such as “secret” or “private.”

3. Run and inspect the app locally

Use the framework’s normal development command, or run vercel dev when you need Vercel-style local routing and functions. The goal is to catch failures before the host builds the project.

  1. Install the dependencies specified by the project’s lockfile.
  2. Load the intended local variables.
  3. Start the development server using the project’s documented script or vercel dev.
  4. Open every principal route, not just the landing page.
  5. Submit forms, exercise authentication and call each API-backed feature.
  6. Watch the terminal for failed server functions, missing variables, rejected CORS requests and database errors.

Check both an empty-state path and a populated path. Generated apps often look complete with placeholder data but fail when a real response is empty, delayed or unauthorized. Also test a direct request to a nested route; a client-side router can appear to work during navigation while a host returns a 404 when that route is opened or refreshed directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Create a preview deployment

Vercel

From the linked project directory, create a non-production deployment with:

vercel deploy

The resulting preview URL is a production-like environment that does not replace the live site. Share it with anyone who needs to review the release, and keep the URL tied to the commit or generated artifact being tested.

Netlify

Use a Deploy Preview or branch deploy according to the repository workflow. A Deploy Preview is created for a change under review, while a branch deploy can provide a persistent URL for a named branch. Confirm which context is being built and which environment variables that context receives; otherwise you may test a preview with different credentials or API endpoints from production.

5. Verify the preview before promoting it

Use the preview URL on a desktop browser, a narrow mobile viewport and a second browser session where authentication is relevant. Test the deployed artifact, not your local server.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • Navigation: Open every top-level route, refresh a nested route and use the browser back and forward controls.
  • Forms: Submit valid data, required fields, malformed values and duplicate submissions. Confirm visible success and error states.
  • API calls: Check successful responses, authentication failures, timeouts and empty results. Confirm that requests reach the expected environment.
  • Authentication: Test sign-in, sign-out, protected routes, expired sessions and callback redirects.
  • Database paths: Create, read, update and delete a safe test record if the app uses persistent storage. Verify that the preview is not writing unintended production data.
  • Assets: Inspect images, fonts, icons, downloads and dynamically generated files. Look for 404 responses in the browser’s network panel.
  • Responsive behavior: Test the smallest supported viewport, touch controls, keyboard focus and long text.
  • External integrations: Exercise email, storage, payment or webhook flows in their test modes and verify callback URLs.

Review the deployment log as well as the browser. On Vercel, vercel logs exposes runtime and deployment information, while vercel curl can help inspect a deployed endpoint from the command line. Netlify users should inspect the deploy log, function log and context settings for the failing deployment. A green build only means the build command completed; it does not prove that every runtime request succeeds.

6. Promote the verified build to production

Vercel production deployment

When the preview passes, deploy the selected commit or local artifact with:

vercel deploy --prod

This command targets the live, user-facing environment. Before running it, confirm the production environment variables, selected project and commit. If the project is connected to a repository, an equivalent workflow is to merge the reviewed change into the configured production branch and let the host build that commit.

Netlify production deployment

Merge the approved change into the configured production branch, or use the project’s supported production-deploy command. Verify in the dashboard that the production context, not a Deploy Preview or branch context, was built. Record the commit identifier shown for the deployment so you can identify exactly what is live.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not make unrelated code changes during the production promotion. A narrow, identifiable release is easier to validate and roll back than a deployment that combines the generated app with last-minute configuration edits.

7. Attach and configure the custom domain

Add the domain to the host

For Vercel, add a domain from the linked project with:

vercel domains add example.com <project-name>

Replace the example domain and project placeholder with your own values. The host will show the DNS records required for the domain. Copy those records exactly into the registrar’s DNS manager; do not substitute a guessed IP address or CNAME target.

Netlify provides domain management for the production site. Add the custom domain there first, then follow the records it displays for the apex domain and any subdomain. The temporary netlify.app address is useful for deployment checks, but it is not the branded production URL you should publish.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the canonical host

Decide whether visitors should use the apex form, such as example.com, or a www subdomain. If both are configured, make one canonical and redirect the other. Apply the host’s recommended records for each name and verify that the redirect preserves the path and query string.

DNS changes are controlled by the registrar and can be cached by recursive resolvers. Do not announce the launch merely because one network resolves the new record. Check the domain from more than one connection and use the host’s domain status page until it reports the expected configuration.

HTTPS and certificates

Vercel states that it automatically provisions an SSL certificate after the domain is set up. Wait for the certificate status to become valid before directing users to the new address. For any host, open the HTTPS URL and confirm that the browser shows a valid certificate, that HTTP redirects to HTTPS as intended and that no page loads insecure assets.

8. Confirm the public production URL

Once DNS and HTTPS are ready, test the exact URL that will appear in documentation, emails and search results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the HTTPS canonical domain in a private browser window.
  2. Open the alternate apex or www form and verify the intended redirect.
  3. Visit a representative nested route directly, then refresh it.
  4. Submit one safe end-to-end transaction and verify its result in the appropriate test or production system.
  5. Inspect page titles, canonical URLs, robots rules and the sitemap.
  6. Check analytics and error monitoring using the production configuration.
  7. Confirm that the domain serves the new production deployment rather than an old preview or an unrelated project.

Use the custom domain for final checks because cookies, callback allowlists, security headers and absolute URLs can behave differently on a temporary host. If the app generates links or emails, inspect those links for the canonical domain before announcing the release.

Vercel and Netlify: which workflow fits?

Decision area Vercel Netlify
Preview workflow Unique preview deployment URLs created with the deployment workflow. Deploy Previews for changes and branch deploys for selected branches.
Production trigger vercel deploy --prod or a configured production branch. The configured production branch or the project’s supported production-deploy workflow.
Environment configuration Environment-scoped variables; vercel env pull .env.local can retrieve local values. Environment-scoped variables managed through the UI, CLI, API or configuration files.
Domain workflow Add the domain with the CLI or dashboard, apply the displayed DNS records and wait for automatic SSL provisioning. Use production custom-domain management and apply the DNS records shown for the site.
Debugging Deployment and runtime logs, plus vercel curl and vercel logs. Deploy logs, function logs and context settings for the affected deployment.
Temporary URL Preview URL for testing before production promotion. A temporary netlify.app deploy URL and separate production custom domain.

The choice should follow the project’s framework support, existing repository integration and team workflow. Both can provide a preview-first release, environment-scoped variables and a custom domain; neither removes the need to test the deployed artifact.

Common failures and targeted fixes

The build fails before a preview URL is created

Read the first actionable error in the deploy log rather than the final cascade of failures. Compare the host’s Node or runtime version, install command, build command and output directory with the local project. A missing generated file, case-sensitive import or uncommitted configuration file is common when a project works on a case-insensitive local filesystem but fails on the host.

The page loads but API calls fail

Check that the variable is configured for the deployment context that was actually built. Verify the production or preview endpoint, allowed origins, authentication callback and serverless-function path. If the browser reports a CORS error, fix the server’s origin policy rather than trying to hide the error in client code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Login redirects to the wrong address

Register the preview and final production callback URLs with the identity provider as separate environments when supported. Confirm that the application’s public URL variable is set in the production scope and that the provider is not still using the temporary host.

A nested route returns 404 on refresh

This usually means the host is serving the initial document for client-side navigation but has no rewrite for direct requests. Add the framework’s documented history-fallback or route configuration, redeploy, and test a direct request to several nested paths.

The custom domain shows an old site or a certificate warning

Inspect the DNS records at the registrar and compare each value with the host’s current instructions. Remove conflicting records only when you understand what service they support. Confirm the domain is attached to the intended project, wait for the host to validate it, then retest HTTPS and both canonical host variants.

A variable change has no effect

Trigger a new deployment and verify that the changed value is in the deployment’s environment scope. Build-time variables are embedded during compilation; changing a dashboard field does not rewrite an already built bundle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The preview accidentally touches live data

Separate preview credentials and databases from production wherever possible. If the provider cannot create separate resources, use read-only test data and explicit safeguards. Never assume that a preview URL automatically creates an isolated backend.

Security and reliability checks before announcing launch

  • Remove test keys, debug routes and placeholder accounts from the production configuration.
  • Confirm that server-side secrets are not present in the browser bundle or repository history.
  • Use least-privilege credentials for databases, storage and external APIs.
  • Check authentication, authorization and ownership checks on every data-changing endpoint.
  • Verify that error responses do not expose stack traces, tokens or connection strings.
  • Enable appropriate analytics and error monitoring with production identifiers.
  • Publish a sitemap and robots rules that match the launch decision, and set one canonical URL.
  • Document who can redeploy, where variables are managed and how to disable a failing integration.

Monitoring is part of deployment, not a later enhancement. Watch the first real requests for elevated error rates, failed functions, authentication loops, broken forms and unexpected database writes. A simple alert on server errors and a tested contact path for user reports can reveal failures that a scripted preview checklist misses.

Prepare a rollback before launch

Know which previous deployment is known good and how to make it live again on your host. Keep the commit or artifact identifier, the relevant environment-variable change and the DNS configuration recorded in the project’s release notes. If the problem is caused by a secret or integration, rolling back code alone may not fix it; restore the compatible configuration as well.

For a domain problem, keep the temporary host URL available for diagnosis while the DNS issue is corrected. For an application defect, revert to the last verified deployment, confirm the custom domain serves it, then investigate the failed release separately. Do not combine a rollback with untested DNS edits unless the domain itself is the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Production launch checklist

  • Preview build completes without errors.
  • Every route, form, API call, authentication flow and external integration passes on the preview URL.
  • Production variables exist in the Production scope, contain the intended values and are absent from Git.
  • The production deployment points to the expected commit or artifact.
  • Registrar DNS records match the host’s instructions.
  • HTTPS works on the custom domain, and apex/ www redirects are deliberate.
  • Canonical URL, robots rules, sitemap and analytics are configured for the public site.
  • Error monitoring receives a test event or otherwise shows the production deployment.
  • A previous known-good deployment and a rollback or redeploy path are documented.
  • The final public URL has been tested in a private window and from more than one network.

Only after these checks pass should you replace the preview link in your README, product documentation, emails and announcements with the custom HTTPS domain.
