You can earn Battle Pass progress and eligible rewards in Overwatch without buying Premium: play matches, focus on the reward path you want, and use event challenges when they specifically award Battle Pass XP. In Season 5, match XP can advance the current pass and one Unvaulted Pass at the same time. Free progress does not unlock every Premium reward, and the exact Season 5 free-track items and tier requirements are shown in the in-game Battle Pass.
How to make progress on the current Battle Pass
Play matches to earn Battle Pass XP. Season 5’s overview confirms that match XP progresses the current pass; it does not publish a complete reward-by-reward schedule for the free track. Open the in-game Battle Pass to see which rewards are available to you and what each requires.

Blizzard’s Season 4 announcement described the revamped pass as letting players choose which Legendary skin to pursue first after an introductory track. The Season 5 overview says this flexible progression continues. Use the current in-game interface to confirm the available paths and requirements rather than relying on older tier lists. The once-per-pass Tier Hack mentioned in the Season 4 announcement, which swaps an eligible Legendary reward for a cosmetic from a curated Swap Pool, was for Premium owners—not a free reward-selection option. Use an Unvaulted Pass for eligible older rewards
Season 5 introduced revised passes from Seasons 1–15. If you had already progressed through an eligible old pass, that free-track progress carries forward, so you can resume earning its eligible rewards. You can direct match XP to the current pass and one Unvaulted Pass simultaneously. When you finish the active Unvaulted Pass, it automatically advances to another available one unless you choose otherwise; an acquired Unvaulted Pass remains available on your account. Unvaulted Pass rewards are not a copy of the original Premium reward set. Blizzard says they exclude Overwatch Coins, XP Boosts, Mythic Prisms, Prestige Titles, and Mythic Hero and Weapon Skins. Check the pass in-game to confirm which eligible rewards remain and what your existing progress unlocks.
Check event challenges for Battle Pass XP
Some event challenges can provide another route to Battle Pass XP, but the reward depends on the event’s own rules. In Season 5’s Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, challenges awarded Offerings, and each Offering pledged earned Battle Pass XP. Blizzard listed the event for October 6–November 2, 2026; those dates apply to that event, not to future events. Check the current event page and challenge descriptions to see whether they award Battle Pass XP.

What free progress does—and does not—mean
Playing without Premium lets you progress and claim rewards that the free track makes eligible. It does not grant every Premium-only reward or feature. The Season 5 overview reviewed here does not provide a full free-track item list or tier thresholds, so use the in-game Battle Pass for those specifics instead of treating rewards from a previous season as current.
Older explanations of the original Overwatch 2 Battle Pass described daily and weekly challenge XP and a group XP boost. Those launch-era details do not establish the current Season 5 schedule or bonuses.
