Earn Gloom, then spend it at a Beacon to level the Harbinger. Shell Points are awarded at selected level milestones—not every level—and are used to buy Shell abilities. Check the Beacon’s reward preview before confirming a level-up; use Glimpses to advance a Shell’s Bond when a higher ability row is locked.
How the progression loop works
- Earn Gloom through play.
- At a Beacon, spend Gloom to level the Harbinger.
- Before confirming, inspect the level-up reward preview. Some milestones award Shell Points; other level-ups award none.
- Spend available Shell Points in a Shell’s ability tree, subject to the ability’s requirements.
- If a higher ability row is locked, use Glimpses to advance that Shell’s Bond.

Why a level-up may give no Shell Points
Shell Points are tied to selected milestones rather than each level. If a level-up awards none, that alone does not mean the system is broken. Use the reward preview shown at the Beacon and follow the milestone displayed for your current build. A player discussion gives examples of multiple level-ups without a point followed by a milestone awarding one or two; those examples are illustrative, not a guaranteed schedule. How to spend points and check refund rules
Spend Shell Points in the ability tree for the Shell you want to develop. If an ability is unavailable, check both its Bond-row requirement and its point or capacity requirement; having an unspent point may not be enough.

Independent guides and player discussion report that Shell Points can be refunded and reallocated, while spent Glimpses cannot be refunded. No official developer confirmation for those refund rules was established in the sources reviewed.
