For dust on an assembled LEGO display model, use a clean, dry, very soft brush and light strokes, working from the top down while supporting fragile sections. Save washing for pieces removed from the model: LEGO recommends hand-cleaning them with water no hotter than 104°F (40°C), a soft cloth or sponge, and optional mild detergent.
Dust an assembled LEGO set without taking it apart
LEGO’s cleaning guidance covers bricks and pieces, not a dedicated method for dusting a fragile assembled display model. For routine display dust, collector guidance supports gentle dry brushing or moving air; a soft brush gives you more control around small parts.

- Stabilize the model. If you need to move it, hold the base or a sturdy structural area. Avoid lifting it by a thin appendage, antenna, clip, or other small attachment.
- Choose a clean, dry, very soft brush. A soft-bristled makeup or artist’s brush is a practical option, not a LEGO-endorsed product.
- Brush from top to bottom. Use short, light strokes to lift dust from studs and detailed areas. Work slowly so falling dust does not land on surfaces you have already cleaned.
- Go carefully around delicate details. Take extra care with minifigure printing, stickers, transparent pieces, clips, antennas, and loose accessories. If a part feels unstable, do not press against it; dust around it instead.
Gentle moving air is another collector-suggested option, but a strong blast can dislodge small or lightweight parts. Avoid treating compressed air as automatically safe; a soft brush is easier to direct.

Washing is for pieces that need more than surface dust removal. Separate them from the model where practical, and do not expect water to clean joined elements effectively. Keep electronics and sensitive metal-containing pieces out of a regular wash.

- Separate the parts. Remove the pieces that need cleaning. Set aside electronic hardware and sensitive parts rather than submerging them.
- Hand-clean ordinary pieces. LEGO recommends water no hotter than 104°F (40°C) and a soft cloth or sponge. Mild detergent is optional; rinse it away with clear water. LEGO warns that higher temperatures may affect brick quality. See LEGO’s cleaning instructions.
- Air-dry at room temperature. Keep the pieces away from direct sunlight and let them dry naturally. LEGO advises against using a washing machine, dishwasher, oven, microwave, or hair dryer to clean or dry bricks.
- Reassemble only when dry. This keeps moisture from being trapped between pieces.
Clean electronic and sensitive pieces separately
For electronic components or sensitive pieces that contain metal, LEGO advises wiping with a cloth moistened with water and a mild detergent without perfume or oil. LEGO Education’s storage and cleaning guide says not to submerge or spray electronic hardware, and to unplug sensors and motors from power before cleaning. Use a lightly moistened cloth, not a wet one.
Avoid bleach and alcohol-based disinfectants on LEGO elements. LEGO Education warns that these can damage elements, decorations, and transparent parts, or cause cracking and crazing.

Choose the method that fits the model

Reduce dust buildup between cleanings
A display case or dust cover can reduce dust settling on a displayed model. It is an optional display solution, not a cleaning requirement; choose one that fits the model without pressing on delicate parts.
