How to Dry Wet Clothes Indoors Without Making Your Home Damp

Remove excess water, dry laundry on an airer in one ventilated room, and keep vents clear. Persistent damp may point to a problem with the home, not just laundry habits.

To dry clothes indoors without making your home damp, remove as much water as possible in the wash, then spread the laundry on an airer in one room where you can ventilate safely. Close the room door to limit moist air spreading, keep vents clear, and consider a dehumidifier if indoor drying is frequent or condensation is already a problem. Drying wet clothes directly on radiators is best avoided.

Why indoor laundry can make a home damp

Wet clothes release moisture into the air as they dry. Cooking and bathing add moisture too. When humid indoor air meets a colder surface, water can condense there; condensation is one common cause of damp and mould, especially in colder weather. Ventilation helps carry moist air out, while a dehumidifier can collect some of it from the room.

NEA says indoor clothes drying “can add up to 10–15 litres of water into your home every week.” That is a qualified estimate from NEA, not a universal measured amount: the page does not state the original study or the household conditions behind it.

How to dry clothes indoors without causing condensation

  1. Dry laundry outdoors when practical. NICE recommends avoiding moisture-producing activities such as indoor air-drying where possible, or improving ventilation when they cannot be avoided. NICE guidance on indoor air quality.
  2. Extract more water before hanging. If outdoor drying is not possible, CSE suggests running the washing machine’s spin cycle twice. Follow the garment labels and appliance instructions.
  3. Use one room and an airer. Spread clothes on a rack so air can move around them rather than bunching them together. Choose a room that can be ventilated. A bathroom may work if its door can be closed and a window opened, but the best room depends on your home’s layout and ventilation.
  4. Contain and ventilate the moisture. Close the room’s internal door to reduce moist air spreading through the home. When it is possible and safe, open the window slightly. Keep trickle vents and airbricks clear, and use an available extractor fan as appropriate. England’s home ventilation guidance says trickle vents should be left open and unblocked.
  5. Let clothes dry fully before putting them away. Store them in wardrobes or drawers only when they are completely dry.

Where should you dry clothes indoors?

Choose a single room where you can keep the door closed and provide ventilation. Oxford City Council suggests a bathroom if it has a window that can be opened and the door can be closed. If your bathroom has no suitable ventilation, another room with a safely openable window may be more appropriate. Do not block designed vents to keep the room warm or contain moisture.

What to avoid while drying laundry indoors

  • Do not drape wet clothes directly over radiators. NEA and Oxford City Council advise against it. Use an airer instead, with enough space for air to circulate.
  • Avoid portable gas or LPG heaters. CSE and NEA note that these heaters can add moisture to the home.
  • Do not assume a window must always be open. Ventilate when conditions make it possible and safe; homes and circumstances differ.

Would a dehumidifier help?

A room dehumidifier can be useful where laundry dries indoors frequently or condensation is a recurring problem. It removes moisture from room air, but it does not replace ventilation or repair a building defect. The cited guidance does not establish a universal humidity target or comparable product performance, running costs, or drying times.

A room hygrometer can help you monitor humidity and identify rooms that may need more ventilation; CSE suggests using one for this purpose. The sources do not establish a single target that applies to every home.

Other drying options

Option What it does Important conditions
Outdoor line or drying space Dries clothes outside the home. Preferred when practical because laundry moisture is not released indoors.
Indoor airer or rack Holds clothes for air-drying. Use in one ventilated room; keep the door closed and open a window when possible and safe.
Dehumidifier Collects moisture from room air. Can help in a drying room or one prone to condensation, but does not fix underlying building problems.
Tumble dryer Dries laundry mechanically. Oxford City Council says a vented dryer should exhaust through an external wall. The cited guidance does not compare dryer types, costs, or performance.

When damp or mould keeps returning

Household habits can reduce moisture, but persistent damp or mould is not necessarily caused by laundry. England’s damp-and-mould guidance says the problem can involve building deficiencies, inadequate ventilation, inadequate heating, or poor energy efficiency, and the right response depends on the dwelling. It states: “We are absolutely clear that it is totally unreasonable to blame damp and mould in the home on ‘lifestyle choices’.”

Damp and mould can affect the airways and lungs, as well as eyes and skin. Children, older adults, and people with certain health conditions face greater risk of more severe effects. If the problem continues despite reasonable moisture management, renters should contact their landlord; persistent problems may need attention to the home itself rather than more changes to laundry habits.
