Valheim has no in-game command for exporting server files. To copy a BepInEx modpack, you need the server host’s File Manager, SFTP, FTP, or SSH access. Stop the server if the host advises it, archive the server’s BepInEx directory, download that archive, and extract it into the correct destination. The key folders are usually BepInEx/plugins, BepInEx/config, BepInEx/core, and, when present, BepInEx/patchers.

What you can and cannot download from Valheim
An in-game password only lets you connect to the server; it does not grant access to the server’s filesystem. Ask the owner or hosting provider for one of these access methods:

- Hosting-panel File Manager: a browser interface for browsing, compressing, and downloading files.
- SFTP or FTP: a desktop client connection that can copy directories recursively.
- SSH: a command-line connection that can create an archive before downloading it.
BepInEx is “a general purpose framework for Unity modding,” according to the Thunderstore BepInExPack Valheim documentation accessed October 15, 2026. A working manual installation normally places BepInEx, winhttp.dll, and doorstop_config.ini beside the Valheim executable. The folder you download contains the installed framework, plugins, settings, and supporting files; it is not necessarily a complete Thunderstore or r2modman profile export.
Choose the right copy method

For a one-time copy, a ZIP archive is usually the least error-prone option because it preserves the directory tree. If the panel cannot create archives, recursive SFTP download followed by local compression produces the same practical result.

Before you start
- Confirm that the host permits downloading server files and that you have filesystem credentials.
- Identify whether you are copying to another dedicated server, a Windows Steam installation, or a mod-manager profile. The destination changes where the files belong.
- Ask whether the server uses a custom startup script or panel setting for BepInEx. Linux installations commonly use
start_server_bepinex.shinstead of the vanilla startup script. - Decide whether the archive is for private backup or for sharing. Configuration files can contain server addresses, passwords, tokens, or other private values; inspect them before sending the archive to anyone.
Step-by-step: download the folder with a hosting-panel File Manager

Stop the server when the host recommends it
Use the panel’s Stop button before copying if the provider instructs you to do so. A running plugin can write configuration or log data while the archive is being created, leaving you with an incomplete or inconsistent copy.

Open the server root
Launch the panel’s File Manager and navigate to the directory containing the Valheim server executable and startup files. Do not start in a player’s home directory or a temporary upload directory.

Locate the BepInEx directory
Open
BepInExand check forplugins,config, andcore. Also look forpatchersand any framework support files. The normal server layout documented by GameServerKings exposesBepInEx/plugins/,BepInEx/config/, andBepInEx/core/after its BepInEx framework is enabled. -
Create an archive
Select the entire
BepInExdirectory and choose the panel’s Compress, Archive, or Create ZIP action. Name it with a date, for exampleBepInEx-modpack-2026-10-15.zip. Keep the top-level folder in the archive so extraction createsBepInEx/...rather than scattering its contents into the server root. -
Check what the archive contains
Open the archive listing, if the panel supports previews. The first directory should be
BepInEx, with the expected subfolders below it. Include configuration files when the goal is to reproduce the server’s settings. Remove secrets and private logs before sharing. -
Download the ZIP
Use the panel’s Download button. Save the archive locally and record its filename and date. If the panel refuses to compress the directory, download

Get connection details from the host
Request the hostname, port, username, authentication method, and the directory that contains the Valheim executable. SFTP and FTP are separate protocols; select the protocol specified by the provider.

Connect and open the server root
In your transfer client, browse to the server directory containing
BepInEx. If you see only a web root, backup directory, or home directory, ask the host for the correct Valheim path. -
Download recursively
Drag the complete
BepInExdirectory to a local folder and wait for every file to finish. Preserve capitalization and the directory hierarchy. A partial transfer can leave plugins present but omit their configuration or dependencies. -
Verify the local copy
Check that

Step-by-step: create an archive over SSH
SSH is optional and only works when the host provides shell access. Run commands from the server root, not from inside BepInEx, so the archive retains the expected top-level directory.
- Change to the directory containing the Valheim executable.
- Create a ZIP if the server has the
ziputility:zip -r BepInEx-modpack-YYYY-MM-DD.zip BepInEx. - If ZIP is unavailable but TAR is installed, create a TAR archive:
tar -czf BepInEx-modpack-YYYY-MM-DD.tar.gz BepInEx. - Download the resulting archive through SFTP or the host’s file browser.
- Remove the temporary archive from the server after confirming that your local copy opens correctly, unless you need it for backup.
Use the host’s documented commands when its panel supplies a different working directory or archive tool. Do not assume that SSH access includes permission to stop or restart the game process.

The official BepInEx documentation says that running the installation once creates BepInEx/config and BepInEx/LogOutput.log. A newly created directory may therefore contain configuration or log files even before you install additional plugins.
Install the downloaded files on another dedicated server

Prepare the destination
Install the same Valheim server edition and confirm that the destination host supports BepInEx. On Linux, make sure the provider’s BepInEx startup option or script is enabled.

Extract into the server root
Upload the archive and extract it beside the Valheim server executable. The result should be
server-root/BepInEx/plugins, notserver-root/BepInEx/BepInEx/plugins. Placewinhttp.dllanddoorstop_config.inibeside the executable when the pack requires them. -
Install dependencies and matching versions
Copying files does not grant missing dependencies or resolve version conflicts. Install every dependency required by the plugins and use the same mod versions on the destination server.

Use the BepInEx startup path
For a Linux dedicated server, the Valheim pack documents
start_server_bepinex.sh; make it executable, configure it, and run it instead of the vanilla server script. Hosting panels may expose this as a BepInEx startup choice rather than a script you edit directly. -
Start and inspect the logs
Watch the server console and
BepInEx/LogOutput.log. Bootstrap messages should appear before plugin loading messages. Stop and correct the installation if the loader is not initialized or the log reports missing assemblies.Recommended Free Tools

Install the files on a PC or in a mod-manager profile
A Windows Steam installation is the normal client target assumed by the community guide. Extracting the complete archive into the Steam Valheim game directory can reproduce a manual installation, provided the files match the client’s game version and the loader is supported.
If you use a Thunderstore-compatible manager such as Gale, Thunderstore Mod Manager, or r2modman, use its profile directory rather than guessing a random folder. The manager can install declared client dependencies, but it cannot bypass server permissions or make an incompatible server mod work. A raw BepInEx archive may not include the manager’s profile manifest, load order metadata, or dependency declarations, so you may need to create a profile and install the listed mods separately.
Do not place server-only files into every player’s client profile without checking the mod’s documentation. Some mods are client-only, some require both client and server, and some run only on the server.

Client, server, and shared mods

Item, recipe, creature, and progression changes generally require matching files on the server and every player’s client. Compare exact filenames and versions rather than assuming that two similarly named downloads are interchangeable.
Platform limitations
Steam PC
Steam is the platform assumed by the community installation guidance and is the practical target for BepInEx client modding. Both the server and client still need compatible game and mod versions.
Microsoft Store and Game Pass for PC
The community guide describes these installations as difficult to mod. File paths and permissions differ from Steam, so a folder copied from a Steam server may not produce a working client installation.
Xbox
Xbox clients cannot load BepInEx client mods. Downloading the server folder does not change that platform limitation; players on Xbox need an unmodded-compatible server experience.
Troubleshooting common download and startup failures
The panel has no Download button
Ask whether the provider supports archive creation, recursive SFTP, or FTP. Some panels allow uploads but restrict downloads, and exact controls vary by provider. If recursive download is available, copy the directory locally and compress it on your computer.

Move the inner BepInEx directory so that only one folder sits beside the Valheim executable. The correct path is server-root/BepInEx/plugins, not server-root/BepInEx/BepInEx/plugins.
The server starts, but plugins do not load
Confirm that the host is using its BepInEx startup option or start_server_bepinex.sh, that winhttp.dll and doorstop_config.ini are beside the executable when required, and that BepInEx/LogOutput.log shows loader activity.
Players receive a version-mismatch kick
Compare the server’s plugins and config contents with each player’s profile. Reinstall the exact plugin versions and dependencies on both sides. A mod manager can help resolve declared client dependencies, but it cannot correct a server that is running a different release.

Check whether the mod changes shared world content. Item, recipe, creature, and progression mods commonly require the server and every client to have matching files. Verify that the plugin was copied completely and that its configuration was not omitted.
The copied folder contains private information
Review configuration files and logs before sharing. Remove passwords, access tokens, private server addresses, and identifying log entries, then create a new archive. Keep an untouched private backup separately.
What your friends need to join
Give players the exact mod list, versions, and dependencies required by the server. For shared gameplay mods, each player needs a matching client installation; a server ZIP alone is not enough. If you distribute a folder manually, explain where it belongs in the selected mod-manager profile or Steam installation and tell players not to overwrite unrelated profiles without a backup.
For a repeatable team setup, maintain a dated archive and a written list of plugin filenames and versions. When the server changes, create a new archive rather than silently replacing the old one. This makes it possible to roll back after a failed update or a version mismatch.
Provider-specific naming and support
Hosting panels rename the same controls and directories. GameServerKings currently labels its framework selector Modding Framework; another provider may use “BepInEx,” “mod loader,” or a custom startup setting. Delta Networks documents access through a Game Panel File Manager or SFTP and placing plugin files in the BepInEx folder. Treat those labels as provider-specific examples, not universal paths. If your panel does not expose the expected folder, ask support for the server root and the provider’s documented BepInEx startup method.
