Download free games from an official storefront or the game publisher’s website, then check the individual listing before installing. The listing should tell you whether the game is free-to-play, a limited-time giveaway, or a demo, and which devices it supports. “Free” usually means the base download costs nothing; optional purchases or other access requirements may still apply.
Choose the right kind of free game
Free games generally fall into three categories. They are not interchangeable: a giveaway may have a deadline, while a demo is only a sample of a paid game.

- Free-to-play: The base game is available at no cost, often on an ongoing basis. Some games offer optional paid items or content.
- Limited-time giveaway: A store temporarily offers a game for free. Check the current offer and its claim deadline; promotions change.
- Demo: A free trial or portion of a game, rather than the full game. Check the listing for what is included.
Where to find free games on PC
Start with an official store catalog rather than a third-party download page. These storefronts have different catalogs, and the available games and promotions can change.

- Steam’s Free to Play information explains how its free-to-play games work. Browse Steam’s store for individual game listings and requirements.
- Epic Games Store’s Free Games page shows its current free games and promotions. Some offers are time-limited, so check the listing and claim period.
- GOG’s catalog includes some games marked free. The available free titles can change.
These are PC storefront starting points, not a guarantee that every game runs on every computer. For console, mobile, or another device, use its official store or the publisher’s official page and confirm compatibility there.

Check a game before downloading
Open the game’s own official listing and verify the details that matter to your device and how you want to play.
- Platform and system requirements: Confirm the supported operating system or device and compare requirements with your hardware.
- What “free” covers: Look for a giveaway deadline, demo limitations, optional purchases, paid expansions, or other costs.
- Accounts and connectivity: Check whether you need a store account, a publisher account, an internet connection, or an online subscription.
- Age rating and content: Review the rating and description, particularly if choosing a game for a child.
- Play style: Check whether the game is single-player or multiplayer and whether multiplayer has additional requirements.
- Installation: See whether the game needs a store launcher or can be installed another way through the official publisher.
Download and install from the official source
- Open the official storefront or the publisher’s verified website. For a store promotion, go to the store’s own free-games page.
- Select the game and read its listing. Confirm the platform, requirements, whether it is a full game or demo, and any claim deadline.
- Sign in to the official store account if required. For a free-to-play game on Steam, Steam Support says a subscription or credit card is not required to download and play; a payment method is relevant only if you choose to buy supported items or content.
- Use the store’s official app or the publisher’s own download link to install the game. Follow the on-screen instructions and launch it from the installed app or the location specified by the installer.
What to know about accounts and in-game purchases
A no-cost download does not mean every item or service connected with a game is free. Steam says free-to-play games may offer paid in-game items or content, and that players are not obliged to buy them to play and progress. Check the particular game’s listing and settings before making purchases.

Steam also says accounts with no purchased game and no funded Steam Wallet are “Limited User” accounts, which can have restricted access to some community features. Individual games may set their own restrictions as well. This is distinct from the cost of downloading and playing a free-to-play title.

Use the store’s exact official domain or the publisher’s official website, especially before signing in or entering payment details. Be wary of outside sites promising free game currency, rewards, or content in exchange for account credentials or downloads. Epic warns users about suspicious offers for free V-Bucks, and GOG advises users to verify that a site posing as GOG is genuine.
