To connect Sony wireless headphones to a Windows laptop or Mac, put the headphones in Bluetooth pairing mode, add them from the laptop’s Bluetooth settings, then select them as the sound output. Pairing controls vary by Sony model, so use its Help Guide if the steps below do not match your headphones.
Before you start
- Make sure the laptop has Bluetooth enabled and supports the A2DP Bluetooth profile for audio. If Bluetooth is not available, a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter is an optional solution; check hardware and driver compatibility with your computer manufacturer. Sony’s computer-pairing guide explains the computer requirements.
- Keep the headphones near the laptop while pairing. If they reconnect to another device you have used before, disconnect them there first.
Put the Sony headphones in pairing mode
For a first pairing—or after the headphones have been initialized—pairing mode may start automatically. To pair with another device later, many Sony models enter pairing mode when you hold the power button for 5–7 seconds, but the exact control and timing depend on the model. Follow the model-specific Help Guide if that does not work. Sony’s pairing support instructions cover the model-dependent process.

Select the headphones for sound
Bluetooth pairing and audio routing are separate. After pairing, open the laptop’s sound settings and select the Sony headphones as the audio output. If you want to use their microphone for calls, select them as the input device as well.

On the WH-1000XM5, Windows may show separate entries labelled “Audio” and “Input.” Sony advises selecting “Audio” when connecting or disconnecting that model. This label guidance is specific to the WH-1000XM5, not a rule for every Sony headphone. See Sony’s WH-1000XM5 computer connection instructions.

The headphones do not appear in the Bluetooth list
- Check that the headphones are in pairing mode, rather than simply powered on.
- Switch the laptop’s Bluetooth off and on, then try adding the headphones again.
- Disconnect the headphones from another previously used device if they have reconnected to it.
- Move the headphones closer to the laptop if distance or radio interference may be affecting the connection.
- Remove an old saved pairing from the laptop, then put the headphones back in pairing mode and pair again.
- Restart the laptop. If the problem persists, test the headphones with another playback device to help isolate whether the issue is with the laptop or headphones.

The laptop says connected, but sound still comes from its speakers
Choose the Sony headphones as the laptop’s sound output. A successful Bluetooth connection does not necessarily make them the active playback device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAudio works, but the headphone microphone does not
Check the laptop’s sound input settings and select the Sony headphones’ microphone if it is available. Windows may list playback and input separately.

Consider initialization only after basic checks
Initialization restores factory settings and deletes the headphones’ pairing information. The button sequence varies by model, so follow the applicable Sony Help Guide rather than trying a generic reset procedure. You will need to pair the headphones again afterward. Sony’s initialization guidance explains why the steps are model-specific.
