To read a book offline, download it in the Google Play Books app on your phone or tablet. To get an EPUB or PDF file for use elsewhere, use Export from the Play Books library on a computer—if that title is eligible. An in-app download and an exported file are different things.
Download a book for offline reading on a phone or tablet
This saves a local copy for reading in Google Play Books; it does not create a separate EPUB or PDF file.

- Open the Google Play Books app and sign in to the Google Account that owns or can access the book.
- Open your library and find the title.
- Tap or select Download beside the book. When the download is ready, an indicator appears.
- Open the book in Play Books to read it offline.
To remove the local copy later, select the book and choose Remove download. This frees device storage but leaves the title in your account library. Google also provides a Wi-Fi-only download setting; its menu location and wording can differ between Android and iOS. Android app versions 2023.04.17.00 and later support selecting multiple books to download. Google’s iPhone and iPad offline-reading instructions and its Android instructions describe the app workflow. Google says manga chapters are not available for offline reading.

Export a book as EPUB or PDF on a computer
Use Export when you need a file for a compatible reading app or device, rather than just offline access in Play Books.

- On a computer, go to Google Play Books and sign in to the account with access to the book.
- Open your library or books list and find the title.
- Open the title’s More menu, choose Export, then select Download EPUB or Download PDF if either option is offered.
- Open the downloaded EPUB in a compatible ebook app, or the PDF in a PDF reader.
Some exports arrive as an ACSM file rather than a directly readable EPUB or PDF. Google says additional software is needed to access or convert that file. See Google’s export instructions for details.
Why Export may not be available
Export depends on the individual title. A publisher may disable it; rentals cannot be exported; and some large files cannot be exported. If eligibility is unclear, check the book’s Reading information in its Play Store listing.

Check compatibility before moving the file
An EPUB or PDF export is not guaranteed to work on every ebook reader. Google warns that most books from Play Books cannot be opened on Kindle, so check the target device’s supported formats and restrictions before relying on an export.

If your Android device supports SD-card storage, Play Books has a setting to save new downloads to the card. The card needs enough free space, and available settings vary by device. Google’s Android download instructions cover this option.

- In Play Books settings, enable the option to save new downloads to the SD card.
- For a book already downloaded to internal storage, remove its download.
- Download the book again so the new copy is saved using the SD-card setting.
Changing the setting does not move existing downloaded books automatically. An SD card is optional and useful only on a device that supports this storage option.

Choose the right download method
- Just want to read without internet? Download the title in the Play Books app.
- Need a file for another app or device? Try computer Export and use an offered format the target reader supports.
- Need more room on an Android device? Use SD-card storage for new downloads if the device supports it; existing copies must be removed and downloaded again.
