1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo use local AI models from Python without an internet connection, download each model and its tokenizer while connected, save them in separate local folders, and load those folders after disconnecting. With Hugging Face Transformers, set HF_HUB_OFFLINE=1 and pass local_files_only=True when loading. You must also prepare the Python environment and any required runtime files before going off grid: downloading model weights alone is not enough.
What you need to prepare before going offline
Offline inference has two phases: acquire the files while connected, then load and run them locally. A local model directory should include the files its architecture needs, such as weights, configuration, and tokenizer data. The Python packages and dependencies needed to read those files must also be available on the target computer.

- Model artifacts: weights, configuration, tokenizer files, and any other files required by the model.
- Compatible software: Python packages, dependencies, and—if your chosen runtime requires them—runtime binaries and supporting files.
- Access and terms: arrange any required model credentials while connected, and check the model card for access conditions and license terms.
- Target-machine fit: choose a model architecture, file format, runtime, operating system, and hardware combination that the target machine supports.
The Transformers offline guide for version 4.49.0 documents saving model files for local use. That version reference is specific to the guide; use package versions that match the environment you actually prepare.

Download and save a Transformers model
Option 1: Fetch through Python
While connected, load the repository and save the model and tokenizer into a dedicated directory. This illustrative pattern uses a causal language model; the repository must be compatible with the selected AutoModel class.

Check the model card for architecture-specific requirements rather than assuming every repository works with AutoModelForCausalLM. The Transformers documentation describes the prefetch, save, and local-reload workflow; this example is illustrative, not a reported test.
Option 2: Fetch repository files with the Hub CLI
The Hugging Face Hub CLI can download repository files to a chosen directory and select a revision such as a commit, branch, or tag. Inspect the proposed download first, then fetch the revision you intend to keep:

hf download organization/model-repository
--revision <commit-or-tag>
--dry-run
hf download organization/model-repository
--revision <commit-or-tag>
--local-dir models/model-a
Replace the example repository and revision with real values. Check these options against the Hub CLI version installed on your connected machine. The CLI documentation says --dry-run reports proposed files and approximate sizes; using --revision makes the selected repository revision explicit. Local-directory metadata can help avoid downloading files again when they are already up to date.
Load a saved model with internet access disabled
In the offline process, point both the tokenizer and model loader to the saved directory. Set the offline environment variable before importing Transformers, and use local_files_only=True on each load:

tokenizer = AutoTokenizer.from_pretrained(

HF_HUB_OFFLINE=1 disables Hugging Face Hub HTTP calls, while local_files_only=True tells these individual loads to use local files only. Neither setting installs missing Python packages or supplies missing model files.
Switch models by selecting another prepared directory
For a small script, make the chosen local directory a configuration value and load the matching model and tokenizer together. Each selectable folder must already contain a compatible, complete set of files.

Choose a runtime that matches the model and integration
Transformers is one way to load supported models directly in Python. Other local runtimes expose different formats and interfaces, so choose based on the model you intend to run and how your application should call it.

| Option | Documented integration | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Hugging Face Transformers | Python model and tokenizer loading from local paths; the official Transformers offline guide documents local saving and reload. | Confirm the repository architecture works with the model class and that all required files and Python dependencies are prepared. |
| llama.cpp | CLI, server, and Python interfaces are documented among its available interfaces. | Confirm the model format and architecture are supported, and prepare the selected runtime for the target platform. |
| LM Studio | Its documentation lists a Python SDK and OpenAI-like local endpoints. | Choose whether your script should use the SDK or a local endpoint, and obtain model files and required runtimes while connected. |
| Ollama or Jan | Listed by Hugging Face among local application options. | Check each product’s current model support, API, and offline setup requirements for your intended machine; the cited comparison does not establish a universal winner. |
These options are not interchangeable merely because they run models locally. Format support, architecture, operating system, hardware, and whether your code loads a path or calls a runtime-specific API all affect the choice. The official sources cited here do not provide a head-to-head benchmark.
What “off grid” means for LM Studio
LM Studio’s official offline documentation says that using already downloaded models, chatting, and running a local server do not require internet access. Model search and model downloads do require connectivity; the documentation also identifies runtime downloads and some catalog details as network-dependent. Obtain the model files and any needed runtime components before disconnecting.
The same documentation describes runtime hot-swapping as available “As of LM Studio 0.3.0.” Treat that as a version-specific documented capability, not a guarantee for every later build or every model combination. Check the documentation for the version you install.

- Prepare while connected: download each intended model revision, its tokenizer or other required artifacts, and the selected runtime’s required files.
- Prepare the software environment: install the compatible Python packages and dependencies on the target computer, or otherwise make them available to it before isolation.
- Record what you used: keep the repository revision, package versions, runtime version, and model files together so the setup can be reproduced.
- Disconnect or block network access: run the actual application with the same settings and paths you plan to use off grid.
- Exercise every model choice: load each selected directory and run a small inference, checking that the tokenizer, model, and runtime all work without network access.
If an offline load fails, first check that the path is correct and that the directory contains the required files. Then check for missing packages or runtime components, architecture or format incompatibility, and any model access requirement that was not resolved while connected. Do not treat successful model-file downloads as proof that the full offline application is ready.
Plan storage from the models you select
Model downloads can take substantial storage, but there is no universal capacity requirement: it depends on the specific models and files you choose. The Hub CLI documentation includes illustrative examples of a 32.1G model entry and a 35.5G aggregate cache; these are examples from its documentation, not a general estimate for all models. Use the CLI dry run to inspect a proposed download, and size local or transfer storage from the actual artifacts you plan to keep. An external SSD can be useful for carrying prepared files, but it does not replace staging software and runtime dependencies.
