Download the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 installation image, Veeam.Backup365.iso, from Veeam’s official website. Open the ISO, run Veeam.Setup.exe, and select Install. The product was formerly commonly called Office 365 backup software; Veeam’s current documentation calls it Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365. Check the download page for the current build before installing, since package versions change.
Download the official Veeam installation image
Veeam distributes the installer as Veeam.Backup365.iso. The ISO contains the main product installer, Veeam.Backup365.msi, setup files, required components, and installers for Veeam Explorers used with Exchange, SharePoint and OneDrive, and Teams. Optional patch files may also be included. See Veeam’s Downloading Installation Package guide for details.

Check requirements and plan the deployment first
Veeam’s system-requirements page applies to build 8.6.0.1102 and was updated September 4, 2026. The figures below are Veeam specifications, not independent performance-test results; verify the live documentation for the build you download.
Main server
- At least an 8-core modern multi-core x64 processor and 16 GB RAM.
- A virtual machine using dynamic memory allocation requires at least 32 GB RAM.
- Use a supported 64-bit Windows release listed in Veeam’s requirements; the guide also specifies compatible PostgreSQL, NATS, .NET Framework, and Microsoft runtime options.
Proxies and component placement
Backup proxies have separate requirements, including a 4-core minimum and supported Windows or Linux releases. Veeam recommends placing the product installation and third-party PostgreSQL and NATS components on different machines for optimal performance. This is a vendor recommendation, not a guarantee of performance for every environment.
Rank #2
- High-capacity add-on storage.Specific uses: Business, personal
- Fast data transfers
- Plug-and-play ready for Windows PCs
- WD quality inside and out
Access, ports, and compatibility
- Use an installation account that belongs to the local Administrators group on the target machine.
- Confirm that required ports are open for the components in your planned architecture.
- Check whether an earlier installation must be removed and verify that your Microsoft 365 workloads and any on-premises Exchange or SharePoint versions are supported.
- Review authentication permissions for the services you intend to protect rather than assuming one configuration fits every organization.
Veeam labels government support as experimental in the cited requirements. Supported operating systems, workloads, and component versions are build-sensitive, so rely on the requirements page for the version you install.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a start-to-finish deployment overview, use Veeam’s Getting Started guide.

Can you use it without buying a license?
Yes. Veeam documents that the software can run in Community Edition mode without a license. For build 8.6.0.1102, the stated limits are up to 10 user accounts, 1 TB of SharePoint data, and 10 teams across organizations; Community Edition is not time-limited. If your organization exceeds those limits, consult Veeam’s licensing guide for current options.
Veeam says each protected user account consumes one license unit; restoring data does not consume license units. Its guide describes subscription and rental licenses as paid options, with rental licenses distributed only to service providers. Evaluation licenses are for evaluation and testing, while Not For Resale licenses are restricted to demonstration, training, and education. Confirm current commercial terms with Veeam; the cited documentation does not establish prices.
Rank #4

Self-managed installation or a hosted service?
Downloading the ISO is the route for organizations that want to install and operate the software themselves. Veeam’s hybrid-cloud guide also identifies Veeam Data Cloud for Microsoft 365 and managed services offered by VCSP partners as other deployment models. The guide does not establish a universal best choice, feature parity, comparative prices, regional availability, or exactly which tasks each service provider handles. See Veeam’s hybrid-cloud overview, then confirm responsibilities and terms with the provider.
When assessing a hosted or managed alternative, compare who operates the backup infrastructure, who controls repositories and retention, deployment prerequisites, supported workloads, service limits, and current commercial terms. Those details vary and should be confirmed for the specific service.
